The Best Doughnuts in NYC

i agree with misterskull - tres leche at donut plant is best donut in nyc! (and oatmeal donut at donut plant is perhaps second best.)

From Serious Eats: New York

Apps Only: Al Di La Vino

those gnoccis are damn rich, steamsoldier. i think if you ate more than 5 you might be ill.

Roman's in Fort Greene: Excellent Dishes On Shaky Ground

we ate here last weekend. was good but not great. we really like the changing, super-seasonal menu concept, but in fact on the night we went there just wasn't that much on the menu that appealed. the pastas we had (buckwheat rags with some delicious type of honey-nut sauce) and tortellini in broth were perfect. but for the main course the only options were a) grey sole which the waiter described as "very small" and seemed a bit uninspired... b) or risotto milanese, which would be weird /wrong to order after pasta...or c) a $70 steak for 2. anyway we went with the steak and it was totally fine, but not exciting or necessarily $70 good. we'll wait a little while to go back - but are looking forward to what they do with spring produce. our last meal at bonita was super disappointing so this is a welcome addition to the 'hood.

Taste Test: The Best Babka in New York City

@Nikki - I always thought that Zabar's and Eli's had similar but totally different stuff, even though they are owned by brothers. The chicken soup, for example at Eli's is miles tastier than Zabar's. Are you positive that the Eli/EAT guy doesn't make his own babka?

Taste Test: The Best Babka in New York City

Eli's and E.A.T have the best babka I think. It's pricey but very very fine. I think it's made with butter instead of icky shortening, too, but I'm not positive. It's better to buy it at Eli's on 3rd because they sell it by the slice and it's a bit cheaper than at E.A.T..

A Sandwich a Day: Crispy Pork Sandwich at Bark

yes i had this a few weeks ago too was very tasty but quite rich (not surprising) but i was a bit let down by the commercial style bun. i wish bark would use more 'artisanal' buns.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition

whoa this is a total scandal. i will have to try this pret cookie because i really can't believe that it would be particularly great.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Uptown Edition

you should try whole foods cookies the smaller ones that come in big circular packages. not exactly sexy but darn good....but i have a feeling that city bakery /bird bath is ultimately going to take the cake!

Ippudo: Ramen Worth Waiting For

went to Ippudo last night. the ramen tasted great. BUT gave me a terrible MSG headache. i won't be going back. will stick with Momofuku, I guess. Or maybe I'll just stick with soba.

Mandatory Brunch Tip: Way or No Way?

totally sensible. good call. anyway, if you really did ever have sub-par service, you could always ask the manager to please remove the service charge.

Old School NYC bagels?

the only awesome bagel shops in new york are ABSOLUTE BAGELS on Broadway a 107th and BAGEL HOLE on 7th Ave at 12 st. in Park Slope. beautifully crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and just the right smallish size. Luckily, I have lived in both neighborhoods. murray's is like OK and h and h are like bagel-bombs so leaden and doughy.
