Zabb Elee: East Village Newcomer is Best Thai in Manhattan

I've been ordering takeout from Zabb Elee nonstop since reading about it on Chowhound, and I've been to the restaurant once.

Everything is excellent, but I'm a bit ashamed to report I couldn't handle the fishyness of that papaya salad with crab (Som Tum Poo Plara). I ordered it twice just to be sure, and pungency is usually no problem at all for me, but man that dish is fuuuunky.

I do suggest trying the Hor Mok. Don't have any comparison points for it, but it was delicious.

My parents may have been making this up, but apparently there's a Chinese saying - "flip three times, turn 42 times"

Anyone else heard that before?

Great post, Kenji. I too look forward to the crab rangoons.

Braised, Shanghainese style, with plenty of dark braising sauce left over to dip mantou in for days after the duck has been picked clean.

Sichuan hot pot season!

I've been to the GS in Manhattan Chinatown a few times. It's decent - certainly a convenient option for a fun communal dinner that doesn't involve a trek to Flushing. They have all your basic ingredients and prices are fair. I always get the yin/yang broths and they're nothing special, but a couple of the dipping sauces are really good - the spicy garlic and the fermented tofu are my favorites.

Photo of the Day: Epic Taiwanese Shaved Ice

I don't understand what people can't wrap their heads around - and on Serious Eats no less. Ice + condensed milk + a sweetened neutral agent (red beans). How is this any weirder than bubble tea? Or a Sno-Cone made with neon syrup, for that matter?

Sneaking food into movies

Just last night I snuck Momofuku pork buns in to Inglorious Basterds! But that clearly wasn't enough food, so I got some cream cheese wontons from a Chinese takeout place, too. Milk Bar should really make more savory stuff.

Admittedly, it was kind of an odd snacks/movie match.

Omakase in NYC

I was at Ushiwakamaru very recently and it's definitely still open. The omakase there is good value, though not amazing. Presentations are very simple. FYI, the chef also tends to favor oilier, heavier fish (mackerels and the like).

Some other things on the menu are awesome though - the crispy fish bones, the bakudan...
