The Serious Eats Fried Clam Honor Roll

I am sorely disappointed in you, Ed. I don't know if I can trust you or your site again. Do you know I am a fried belly clam fanatic? Do you know I made the treck to johnnys reef on City Island for clams? Do you know they are clam strips flown in from South Africa?

I was devastated, because fried clam strips are not worth eating. And johnnys reef was a horrid place - dirty, loud and low quality food. I am very angry you sent me there. Did you not believe anyone would actually go?

you've missed before, but this was unforgivable.

Good news is I found my yearly freid clam fix the next weekend in west port, CT. West fair fish and chips. The parking lot was the dining room, much like at johnnys reef, but the clams were belly, the lobster roll made with butter, and the clam chower RI style ( no cream, no tomato). Heaven. Add that to your honor roll (and specify that you should order the clams well done)!

Market Scene: Union Square Greenmarket

I once bought whole wheat all purpose flower at the USquare FM. I used it up and want more, but cant find it anymore. Does anyone know who sells flour and what day they are at the market?

Thanks!

Best Dim Sum in Manhattan

Chatham Square is amazing in taste and price. I hesitate to suggest it here b/c I might wanna go there that day :) A 2010 Michelin guide recommendation has had a very noticeable effect on the crowd.

If you are a bit apprehensive, GoGo right across the square is good and has a menu so you know exactly what you are getting.

Daddy D'z in ATL

Bakery for Baguettes

I'm not a fan of balthazar .. but I like an italian style loaf with good crust and fluffy insides ... and I like whole foods' baguette a lot. I like eli zabar's the best. I usually get the double, the single might be more 'french'.

Dean and Deluca has baguettes from several of the best bakeries in town. you can find a D&D convenient for you and sample a bunch over a few weeks (or days?). If you do, let us know what you find!

New York City Wine and Food Festival: Ticket Giveaway, 'Pairing Like A Pro'

Pinot Noir from Willamet valley sounds just right. Of course I always drink that or a Burgundy - and for an american holiday I'll go with the american choice!

Pork Butt in Brooklyn?

I went to the market here in the UES and they butcher kindly explained why I would be more likely to find them 'uptown'. He said they buy in bulk and are lucky to sell half of what they get in an order. IOW, they end up throwing alot out and losing money. try a latino neighborhood that is likely to consume the meat.

Or go to the yuppie places suggested above. heritage/organic/local etc. is great, but pork butt ought to be cheap (think i paid 1.59/lb)

Buying Eggs From The Greenmarket

knoll crest is good.

tellos is better.

I also often wonder which are the best, but have only tried these two.

Scotch bonnets in NYC

Update: I chanced the fairway first b/c i wasnt sure it is season to buy peppers at the greenmarket.

Fairway had habaneros, no scotch bonnett. I got them anyway and am it trying to make the sauce with them. Added a dash of sugar to up the sweetness.

Figure I'll go to the Union Square greenmarket some other time and buy em all if I see them. Please let me know if you happen to go and see them there.

Cook the Book: 'Tacos'

Living in Altanta we used to go to a taco shack at least once once a month, sometimes every weekend for a month. They had Chile Rellenos tacos. SO GOOD. A chile relleno on a tortilla. They also had a great salsa bar with 6 salsas, including one that was more like pureed guac, plus a vat of pickled jalapenos (I like several) and a vat of the cilantro/onion mix that goes on all tacos. When I lived in California I learned that a salsa bar 'es necessito.'

I would get one relleno taco and one al pastor taco and share a chorizo/egg torta w/ my gf. Have not seen a) a chile rellenos taco any where else b) a good al pastor in NYC c) a better salsa bar. I miss great tacos. The name just came to me: El Taco Veloz on Roswell near the Perimeter.

The Mustards in My Fridge; Which Are in Yours?

I always have Boetjes! from rock island, Il. Had it once while visiting Illinois and now bring it back every time I go.
plus grey poupon and guldens.

Alan Richman Doesn't Really Like Chicago Hot Dogs, Ouch

I must chime in here. I live in NYC and ALWAYS prefer the hot dog with skin, grilled, tons of mustard and kraut, maybe some grilled onions, preferably in a top split bun (bun preference acquired while living in new england - it really is far superior, believe it or not).

Except in one instance: Michaels hot dogs in Highwood, IL. It is a fantastic, chicago style dog. Order the 'char dog, chicago style'. They 'char' it on a grill, which means they use high heat to give it a crust that imparts great carmelization and flavor (presumably from the millions of dogs that come before yours). I think it is a skin on dog, and they top it with good pickles (I always ask for extra on the side) and great sport peppers (extra on the side, please). I love the poppy seed bun (I wanna say top split, but cant gurantee it). No neon relish, no mealy tomato. Make sure you get cheese fries to go with it. Their cheese is melty and extremely tasty. Expecting nacho cheese I was floored the first time I tried it. It is 9AM and I wish i was there right now. It is always my first stop when visiting my gf family in the northern burbs of chicago land.

I have had other dogs in chicago, and did not like them. If you are in chicago and have a car and an afternoon, make the trip. It might even be worth taking the commuter train out there. It stops pretty close I think. If it is worth me spending my saturday going to redhook from uptown manhattan (and it certainly is, I do it), it is worth going to highwood from lincoln park or the gold coast.

If you want to make a full day of it, go to Buffos for an italian beef and/or their thin crust cheese pizza (and more cheese fries - I eat cheese fries everyday in chicago, but never in NYC). It is a mom and pop spot that is great. They were written up in Bon Appetite a few years back

Watching NFL

Any suggestions for a good sports bar (with multiple tvs and sunday ticket) with serious eats in Manhattan? Bonus points for reasonable beer prices/specials and not too crowded (ok this might be impossible).

IOW, where do YOU watch football on sundays in Manhattan?

Tried Brother Jimmy's and a few other places last yr, did not love any of them. Thinking about trying Stumble Inn. Thoughts?

Scotch bonnets in NYC

Just returned from a great vacation in Turks and Caicos. On the recommendation of a Middle Caicos native (200 ppl live there) we went to the airport (!!!) for island food. It was fantastic and they had this GREAT vinegar sauce I would like to reproduce at home. The main ingredient is Scotch Bonnet peppers, and in addition to being SPICY, the peppers seemed to be very fruity. Does anyone have a good recommendation on where to find a fresh version of these peppers? After research here and at Chowhound, I have not found any specific recos.

I went to a market uptown (96th and Lex, I live on 89) that carries many mexican items and they did not have. I went to the Food Emporium and they looked old and not worth it.

When can I expect to see them at the farmers market? That would be ideal for me (but I dont know if I can wait :)

FYI, I plan to mix the cut up Scotch bonnets with:
White vinegar
sliced carrots
sliced onion
shredded cabbage
clove
whole black peppercorn
Salt

PS: After having this sauce, I am leaning towards believing that Scotch Bonnets do not equal Habaneros. Please discuss.
