Who Likes Grape Soda?

Yes! My name is Jess and I am a lover of grape soda. While I am with you and don't drink a lot of soda, when I do I like to enjoy a fruit flavored soda. I especially love grape but I also like strawberry or black cherry flavored sodas. Orange sodas can be hit or miss but I really love Cactus Cooler, orange/pineapple soda, which is something I drank during my youth in southern California.

Dear AHT: Best Burgers in Philly?

As a California style lovin' burger eater, PYT and Evolution Burger (just outside Philly in Wynnewood) come closest to those delightful west coast burgers. My favorite gourmet pub burgers are at Pub & Kitchen and Johnny Brenda's. Also a nod to SquareBurger for cranking out a simple but tasty burger and to Butcher and Singer for their weekday lunch deal.

The traditional burger at Good Dog constantly gets overlook because of their stuffed burger. While I like the stuffed one, I especially love their regular old burger.

I second the suggestion for Rouge. It's a fancy burger but it's really good.

So, What Did You Make?

I made the Corn Bread Dressing with Pecans and Bacon that was listed here and it was a big success!

I make this really excellent spinach and artichoke dip that my family is always asking I bring. For Thanksgiving I am always asked, by my in-laws to bring the green bean casserole. They never had it until I brought it along during my first Thanksgiving with them. I use fresh green beans and mushroom which makes such a difference.

What foods are uniquely '80s'?

To the person missing cherry 7-up they still make it. I get it in Philly all the time.

Having grown up in southern California in the 80's I desperately miss Cactus Cooler. I also loved Monterey Jack Cheese Doritos.

I did a lot of dining at Sizzler in the 80's.

Living in Philly, there are many days when I would walk 12 miles for a double double at In-N-Out.

Blue 9 Burger

Thank you for this! I crave a double double at least every other day and being in Philly doesn't help. At least I know I can get something similar without having to fly 3000 miles to my hometown.

From Talk

What childhood food do you wish they still made?

Oh yes I miss Planter's cheese balls, Keebler Tater skins and the Pizzarias. I also miss Monterey Jack cheese flavored Doritos. Chicken Little's from KFC were also great.

Serious Sandwiches: Chick-Fil-A's Chick-n-Minis

Oh how I miss the chicken littles. A few years ago, my friend was still able to get them at a KFC in her hometown in Indiana. She would get a bunch and bring them back to Philly for us. I guess they soon realized that they were like 15 years behind on not serving them and stopped. The mini's are a decent substitute though I always crave them on Sundays when chick-fil-a is closed. Sigh.

My favorite store-bought cookie is _____

I am currently enjoying Trader Joe's candy cane Joe Joe's. While it is a seasonal treat I also enjoy the basic Joe Joe's occasionally. Oh and both must be enjoyed with a large glass of milk.

Oh, man, I thought I had blocked out my Gatorade Gum cravings!

From Talk

What childhood food do you wish they still made?

I miss bbq munchos, planters cheeseballs (there is another brand available now in a large container that are good but...) and morton raspberry filled powdered donuts. Oh, those were the days.

Lettuce? Whaddya, crazy? Why? It adds nothing. Maybe some arugula (strong flavor) under the burger if you need a built-in salad, but plain old lettuce would just disappear.

But tomato in the grilled cheeses sounds good. Gotta have tomato on a cheeseburger.

I'm thinking maybe blue and swiss/Gruyère/Comté for the cheeses (one each), if not all extra-sharp cheddar. If using jalapeño cheddar (or better yet, habanero cheddar), only in one sammy, plain cheddar on the other. Otherwise the chiles will overwhelm everything else.

Bacon only if using cheddar. And not too much. Still have to taste the burger. Balance is important.

Dear AHT: Best Burgers in Philly?

I've eaten almost every burger on the board and think that Grace Tavern has the tastiest burgers of them all. Substitute the fries with the blackened green beans. They're sensational.

Who Likes Grape Soda?

I stopped drinking soda about 20 years ago.
But I miss Fanta. Grape Fanta. Fanta Uva. Very cold, with two straws, straight from the glass bottle.
So I've had Boylan's once. It's nice, but too grown up. Not sweet enough.

From Serious Eats

Who Likes Grape Soda?

Love the grape Crush pop, but it's the only one I'll drink.

From Serious Eats

Who Likes Grape Soda?

Love, love, love fruit sodas. I've weaned myself off non-diet soda after 39 years, now I'm a Coke Zero drinker.

But when I want a treat? I reach for a Welch's.

And if they still made Strawberry soda, I'd reach for that too.

RIP Welch's Strawberry. You are much missed.

From Serious Eats

Who Likes Grape Soda?

I like all sorts of soda. I guess I rarely drink grape because typically I'm looking for "cold caffeine" and less sugar. But, if we are at a cookout or other event where tubs of sodas are iced down and I find a grape, I'll go for it.

Now, if you want to find most of the grape soda lovers in the world, head to South America, especially Brazil. Fanta orange and grape are big sellers there - if you need a break from the guarana ...

Love love LOVE grape soda! Transports me instantly back to my grandparents house where it was always stocked in their fridge (still is). There's something about the artifical grape taste, the fizz, the pretty purple can that makes my mouth water. It's a, oh semi-annual treat for me but each time I have it, I fully appreciate all it has to offer. :-)

From Serious Eats

The best part of grape soda is the strange blue foam it produces when you pour it over ice....

Who Likes Grape Soda?

There was a rock service station on the road from Wichita Falls to Greenville, Texas when we were kids. They had one of those big boxes full of almost frozen water in which were suspended glass bottles of Grape and Orange Nehi sodas and Coca Colas. These were the best things ever when you were driving the 1955 Chevy with no AC in the summer to see Grandmother. They also had a nifty cage with squirrels in it and of course.

I wish I had more access to Fresca from Mexico. While it is also part of the Coca Cola family, the recipe is completely different as it is sooooooo not a diet drink. Mexican Fresca has an addictive, fresh grapefruit flavor that blows our homegrown version and Squirt right out of the water.

AHH the essence of my childhood! Seeing that photo reminded me of drinking grape soda at sleep away camp in peconic dunes, while eating a grape ice pop during snack time--sandals in the dirty sand, sitting on a log, grit from the ground clinging to the condensation on the bottom of that cold purple can of Welches. You nailed it on the head...I am not a soda gal these days. When I get the urge I prefer a limonata or a trader joes grapefruit soda, but I still LOVE a grape soda now and then. Boylan's does a nice version of grape soda (even diet when your feeling sugared out) and if you live in the burbs, Fuddruckers has it on tap.
