Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

I love hot dogs, and the BEST hot dogs are found in North Carolina. There are so many places with amazing hot dogs, and when you order "all the way" here in NC, it always comes with slaw, chili, onions, and mustard, served on a lightly buttered and toasted bun. My boyfriend and many others I know will only eat "pink hotdogs", which many of the places serve, but I like any hot dog.

World's Strangest Fast-Food Items

NOTHING is stranger than Hardees/Carl's Jr.'s burgers topped with other meat products, like the new one - a burger topped with philly beef and served with au jus.
They have also served a huge burger topped with tons of ham.
For breakfast, there is often a sausage bacon and ham biscuit lurking around. It is disgusting to pair your meats, other than the traditional bacon pairing, or chicken cordon bleu

Cook the Book: 'Canal House Cooking, Vol. 1'

I love to have a large variety of small tomatoes, mixed with a bit of olive oil, sea salt, fresh herbs of your choice, minced garlic, and fresh mozzerella. Over this, pour al dente noodles, preferrable fresh if possible. The hot noodles cook the tomatoes just enough. Allow this to sit for at least five minutes, then dig in!
I also love a fresh sweet corn salad, with whatever veggies you have around chopped up, and couscous if you have it, with apple cider vinegar, sugar, fresh herbs, salt and pepper. MMMM!

How do YOU make a tomato sandwich?

Tomato sandwiches are part of life here in western North Carolina. I've probably eaten more tomato sandwiches than anything in the world. When I was growing up in the 1980s, we couldn't afford to buy lots of grocery store food, so my mom planted a HUGE garden. Tomato sandwiches were cheap and we had so many tomatoes we almost had to eat them.
The perfect tomato sandwich:
1. DUKE'S MAYO - This is absolutely essential. I know you cannot buy this mayo in many parts of the country, which is so very sad, because there is no better condiment in the universe. You must try it if you haven't already. There must be mayo on both sides of the bread, which must be white bread or homemade sourdough.
2. A huge slice of a homegrown tomato. This is also essential. Store-bought tomatoes do not compare to homegrown.
3. Salt and pepper must cover the tomato.
This is it: The PERFECT tomato sandwich! Three steps to food heaven! I'm walking outside right now to pick a tomato and make one!

Cook the Book: The Essence of Chocolate

My granny passed away in June. She made the most delicious chocolate cake I've ever eaten. She passed unexpectedly, and we all really regret not asking her to write down her recipes, because no one can recreate that cake. We found her old cookbooks and one had a chocolate cake recipe with the corner turned down, but of course, upon recreation, it wasn't the same. That missing ingredient was just Granny - her love and kindness.

Mellow Mushroom: An Unlikely Southern Tradition

I live in North Carolina, and I went to college at Appalachian State, which is in Boone, NC in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They have a Mellow Mushroom that has been there for years. I think it was one of the first ones. Of course, it was expensive for a college student, but it was a wonderful treat on occasion. I had a Modern British Lit. professor who treated the entire class to pizza, since the restaurant was just across the road for campus - we had class on their patio instead of in the classroom! This was a regular occurance for students at ASU. I won a local game show once that included a $50 gift certificate to Mellow Mushroom and my boyfriend and I were able to eat three times with it.... ahhhh... I love their soft pretzels, the delicious subs, the amazing White pie, and the Magical Mystery Tour pizza! Thanks for the website link - I just found out that there is one about 30 miles away from my small town!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

I have two favorite pork memories:
I was at Mayberry Days a few years ago (in my hometown in NC) with my father, who had a booth set up for his business. I was there very early and was able to follow the judges around while they judged the pig cook-off contest. They judged all different types of the meat: whole hog and bbq with different sauces (eastern and western NC bbq) and the judges all let me sample with the judges. It was amazing!
The other memory is from when I was 8 years old and a neighbor roasted a whole hog on a homemade rotisserie in their yard. It freaked me out at the time, but I ate the meat and it was delicious!

Hostess Fruit Pie, One Less Thing For Me to Eat Before I Die

That isn't at all a real Hostess pie, so please don't judge too harshly! Come to the south (I'm in North carolina), and every gas station will have a big table of fruit pies near the cash register. If you are lucky, they are a local bakery or a local grandma who fries them and has her own little kitchen business, but they always have the Hostess kind too. Peach and cherry were always my favorite! The main difference is that a real Hostess fruit pie is one single pie in the wrapper, not two square ones.

Burger Book Giveaway: 'The Hamburger: A History'

SORRY - misprint on the last poem
Habit formed from age five
A grill on the back lawn
My mother patting fresh meat
Burgers sizzling on the grill in the summer sun
Up and down the tree I climbed
Ready to eat and eager to try
Gigantic burgers, too large for my girl mouth
Everyone laughing as five-year-old me stuffed away
Round, juicy, perfect adult-sized burgers... and always asked for seconds!

How do YOU make a tomato sandwich?

I cube my tomatoes, toss them with olive oil, basil, and pepper, and then stuff them into a hot dog roll. Avocado is nice, but not essential; thin sliced red onion is a plus.

Crusty baguette style bread, sliced lengthwise
Over-ripe tomato squished up and down
So the insides are slathered over the bread
Olive oil generously drizzled over all.

Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

Jslander-

Yeah I struggled with whether to title it "slaw dog" or "west virginia hot dog" but I wanted to give respect to the non-WV slaw dogs while still giving a nod to West Virginia as the probable birthplace.

While I'm interested in authenticity in regional foods, I'm not necessarily against variations if it's done with respect - and if it tastes good! The way a lot of these hot dog styles have evolved is by vendors putting their own twist on things.

Also Martie's did offer plain hot dogs, and the WV dog was listed on the menu as a "Slaw Dog". This is in Northern WV, which is not slaw-mandatory territory according to wvhotdogs.com.

My mistake was ordering a "slaw dog with chili" and 5 minutes later I was presented with a hot dog (chili and slaw) and a big steaming bowl of chili. I guess no chili is not an option... not that I would want it to be..

hotdoglover-

Didn't ask what kind of dog they used. I would say it was similar to an all-beef kosher dog in flavor, but no natural casing or anything. It was decent but the garnish is definitely what made it unique and delicious.

sort of like what makes a good hoagie- the balance of the ingredients and how they work together is what does it for me.
