Snapshots from Chile: Hot Dogs and Sandwiches at Rapa Nui

Lomito's so nice when my mom-in-law makes it at home! But this little piece of pork doesn't really look nice to me. Maybe it's the unusual amount of mayonnaise dumped on top of the veggies. But I actually have to admit that I like lomito because of all the vegetables on the sandwich, not especially because of the pork.

Hi everybody! I'm Jenneke, 22, and I'm a grad student (major: sociology) from The Netherlands. I live together with my boyfriend and two kittehs. I used to be a very, very picky eater, but ever since I met my boyfriend (5.5 years ago), I've learned to eat almost everything (except seafood...). I'm always looking for new recipes to try out in our very small kitchen.

Photo of the Day: Pastel de Choclo, Chilean Corn and Meat Pie

I...must...have...this...now! Pastel de choclo is one of the few things you may wake me up for in the middle of the night. I simply love the crunchyness of the corn on top and the soft, fluffy corn-with-meat-and-veggies inside. Too bad I don't have those clay bowls.

Ooww, I know these! My mom-in-law makes pastel de choclo in them. I'm looking forward to your next Chile-post!

Do you tip for take out that you pick-up yourself?

Take-out tip? Neh, they have to bring the food to me to get some extra money. I usually give the delivery guy something like €1,50 extra, which is $2,20 or so.

Perfect New Year's' Eve

This year we're going to a newyear's party, but I'd rather just stay at home, have a glass of champagne, eat lots of food and go to bed early. I'm just not a party girl. Too bad for me that hubby loves parties.

Any embarrassing eating habits?

I can't stand it when people make noises when they're eating. Chewing with their mouth wide open or crunching really loud or licking their fingers.. Eeeew! I also tend to eat really slow, so everyone has to wait for me. I pick my sandwiches apart, I eat my pizza without eating the crust and I love to eat everything with my hands.

A Loss of Taste

I would have to say bitter. Although I'd probably go nuts without coffee. But I luuurve my sweets, can't live without salt and have to have sour and umami.

I'm Rosezilla (named for my three year old daughter and the giant lizard thing that stomped Tokyo...it's what I call her when she's being...how you say...willful). My real handle is Mandy. I live in Santa Barbara County again after growing up here, but lived for 11 years in western Sonoma County...home of fabulous food and wines. It spoiled me rotten, to become an adult surrounded by all of that luscious produce and foodie opportunity. I managed a microbrewery's kitchen for 6 years, and have SERIOUS opinions about ales, should anyone care for them. Now I'm a home cook primarily, although I do a little catering here and there. My daughter's favorite foods are salmon and broccoli, so I feel as though I've triumphed a bit over the three-year-old beige-food diet. We do, however, eat at McDonald's every Friday after school...it's our little Happy Meal indulgence...and those tiny cheeseburgers are SOOO good. I live with and cook for my mother, as well. I am dating a high school band director, who has actually LOST weight being with me, as he's eating more asparagus and less fast food. I think that size 14 should be the new size 6. I am curvy, healthy, happy and active...and think that excellent foods should be part of everyone's diet. I am active in the "S'Cool Food" movement here, which tries to bring local and sustainable healthy food into school cafeterias. And I love, love, love this website.

@minoric: It looks like too much, but I swear...it's not!

...Okay, I really love mayo.

Haven't had a potato salad sandwich before! If only I were in Japan. :(

The beef sandwiches look AMAZING! They sorta remind me of Vietnamese sandwiches. There is a great place in Williamsburg that makes them really well.

That would be something I'd try only once because it looks interesting and I don't typically care for mayonnaise. But the green beans on the sandwich sounds very good.

I'm torn. That is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much mayo for me (I like a paper-thin layer on each slice of bread), but the other stuff looks delicious. Have you ever had a potato salad sandwich? They are very popular in Japan, especially at 7-11s. Now that's one mayo-y sandwich I can get behind...

@MelsDiner: Green beans are awesome! Remove the meat and you've got yourself a rather tasty vegetarian-friendly sandwich. :) (One of my friends asked for this when we went to a Chilean place in NYC, heh!)

@C: I felt like I gained 5 pounds on the first day of the trip. It was kind of scary..."how did I eat that much food?"

@veggiesattva: 40 cents?! Holy crap. I'd eat a few of those.

Reminds me of Nicaraguan hot dogs in the meat:condiment ration. Similarly shrimpy meatsticks in buns, Loaded Down with as much shredded cabbage as they can cram on there, plus onions, crema or mayo, ketchup, mustard, etc. But for about 40 cents, an excellent afternoon snack.

That cross section of the completo both excited and repulsed me. It looked delicious, yet instantaneously fatal. I am so impressed by your eating on this trip. Impressed and envious.

@alacto-- I grew up in Williamsburg! If you're still there, I'm quite jealous of your accessibility to Aroma's. I was a slave at the Cheese Shop for a few years, and while I can't stand the house dressing any more, oh the cheese and wine selection....mmmmm
