Cook the Book: 'Tacos'

I live in Texas so Mexican Food isn't scarce. Our youth group went close to the border to do some repair work on church buildings, and to thank us, a group of older traditional hispanic woman made us a very abundent meal. That was the absolute best taco I have ever had in my life! The homemade tortialls were so soft and buttery, and the shredded pork filling was to die for! Now, I won't even start to tell the story of how we tried their hot peppers.

When I lived in Japan I had Cherry Blossom Ice Cream and I think it would be an awesome combination to have a Cherry Blossom Cookie component with a Green Tea filling component. I think having the outside pink with a pastel green inside would be a treat for the eyes as well.

I recently had the best chocolate and peanut butter gelato. The chocolate gelato was so creamy and smooth. The pair of them was truely the best combination of gelato that I have ever had.

The only thing I have ever had off of a info commercial was the Magic Bullet. It was only alright for a little while but then broke and went into the trash. The bottom would not catch the blade to turn it...so it was not workable.

My all time favorite dessert from my childhood would have to be my mom's apple cake. The aroma of caramelized syrup filling the house could not be ignored by anyone. The cake would have chunks of apples, swirls of cinnamon, and best of all, the best caramel glaze.

I definently have not outgrown this dessert. My mom gave me the recipe a few years ago, and I now make it for me and my family. I hope one day to pass it on to my kids.

Seriously...this creeps me out too much. The babies can't even sit up! I mean, I know they aren't at that age yet but still...it just seems extremely weird to me. I'm with CSBROWN on this one..it's not they they are dressed as food it's the fact they are laying on platters with garnishes!

Sweet Potato Dishes?

The other night I made a roasted sweet potato "mash". I need to come up with a better name, but it's pretty self explainitory.

I first boiled (in salted water) the sweet potatoes until fork tender. Then tossed with olive oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, ground cloves, and all spice. I placed them into the oven to roast at 375 for about 10 minutes. Took them out and sprinkled brown sugar on top then roasted for about 5 more minutes.

Next, I mashed them all together with about 2 tbs. of butter. They turned out really well but I think next time I will try adding a couple tbs. of heavy cream.

I read the recipe after I made it :(

There will be a next time though!

Served: My Waiter Peeves

We recently went out to eat with some good friends of ours to a really nice restaurant. I mean we've been to TGI Fridays and places like that with them, but never a nice place. It was horrid. I will never choose to go with them again.

Let's start from the beginning. He's a messy eater and not very "polite" with the food. This is hard to explain but I'm sure most of you get it. It's like he doesn't respect what he's putting in his mouth at all. He's just throwing it around and shoving it down his throat, while getting stuff on his shirt and everywhere else.

Then, he finishes his salad and they brought our main course and didn't have a free moment right then to grab his salad plate from the table. So he put it on the floor! "Oh my goodness, did you just say he put it on the floor?" Yes people that's what I said. I have never heard or seen this in my life, ESPECIALLY at the type of resteraunt we were eating at!

Then after a ticket that totaled more then $200 (expensive when your young and from Texas) he was not going to leave a tip at all. He said he didn't believe in leaving tips because he thought the restaurant should pay their waiters enough money. This made it over the top for me. There we are fighting over a tip. I have never even been a waitress and I think this is obsurd.

Don't worry my husband and I left a generous tip.

Truffles? Truffle Oil?

The suggestions I was going to give have already been mentioned. I live in Houston as well and there is a Central Market in Downtown, off of Westheimer. Williams Sonoma is kind of across the street from Central Market. I would also try a store called Sir La Table (I know there is one in Houston but not sure of the location). Hope this helps :)

From Talk

Given ingredients X, solve for baked goods Y.

I would make some sort of apple crumble.

Slice the apples thinly and season with the cinnamon, nutmeg, and honey. Also toss some of the brown sugar with the apples. Bake at 350 for maybe 20 minutes or so. Then combine the flour, brown sugar, little of the butter, and some cinnamon. Crumble this on top of the apples and bake again for like 7 minutes. Combine the powdered sugar w/ a tad bit of yogurt (or milk if you have it) and drizzle on top.

Hope this helps :)

Swiss Restaurant to Serve Food Made With Human Breast Milk

Not to say I would every try it, but it is an interesting topic of why we are disgusted by our own bodies and not animals. I mean, every mammal mother has milk for their baby. Who's to say which mammal we take it from? But the idea of a line of women standing in line with "milkers" hooked onto their breasts, does sound a bit disturbing.

Woman Discovers Strawmato, A Strawberry Inside a Tomato

I agree with most of the comments here...no stawmato. First, if she cut it in half, then there would be some missing from the top of the "stawberry" and some left over on the other half. It looks like the seed goop from normal tomatoes, to me.

Hot Jalepeno Hands

Thanks so much! I started to get more worried because my hands started to swell and turn red, so I called my brother's g.f. (she's a nurse). She told me to take lots of Benedryl. So I've taken two so far and it seems to work. It's funny because my husband recommended that earlier but it didn't make any sense to me because it was only on my skin..I gave him kidos after talking to her haha. Thanks again!

Japanese Baby Food

I lived in Japan for 3 years and my good friend who is Japanese made her own baby's food. I remembered she would cook vegetables and puree them (they have specific puree devices for baby food). Also she fed her these puffed rice crackers that were long shaped that the baby loved. Once the baby was old enough to grasp and slightly chew she gave her slices of tomatoes. Recently when I went to visit, she was feeding her newest baby pureed oatmeal.
When we were there I don't ever remember seeing advertisements for baby food, or seeing actual baby food in the stores.

Hurricane Preparedness

Ah the joys of evacuating. I too am in the same situation.

Should I stay or should I go? If we stay (voluntary evac.) we have gas grill so we will be eating the same stuff. We bought two cases of bottle water from the last scare so we will still be sipping on those. If we go (mando evac.) we will be packing the road trip neccessities: water, honey buns, and stopping somewhere and getting BBQ :)

Stay safe!

What to have with PB&J?

I believe Americans in general have a hard time accepting anything out of the norm. I am an American but have luckily lived overseas, and experienced a different culture. I can't say Americans are the only ones, but I do find that Americans have the most trouble accepting different ideas, cultures, habits, etc.

I do not think you are a savage. I think that is ignorant for someone to even believe that you would be. Who's to say cows, chickens, or pigs can't be domesticated and become our beloved pets.

It's all in how you look at the situation. Unfortunately, some are not open minded and speak too much.

*bumping for the new season*

No_Pam, having grown up on the coast of Florida I relate completely to your post. However, now I live in the center of the state, and while wind damage and minor flooding occur, our most serious threat is sanitation and healthy eating in the powerless days after.

I like the original intent of this thread, but do wonder: what are the basic food items you stock up on, and what methods of cooking do you use should you loose power for a week or so?

While the food in the freezer is still good, I use my grill a lot. I'll cook up as much meat as will fit on the grate as I can then put what we don't eat as a meal right then in to zipper bags, and put the portioned cooked meat in the ice chests to incorporate into meals. For the meals themselves I like to prepare dutch oven recipes like we use when camping. Doing so even enables us to make fresh bread and dessert for variety.

It sounds like a lot of work, and it is. But when the power is out, there really is very little else to do.

Soda vs. Pop vs. Whatever: What Do You Call Cola Drinks?

I am from Sparta,TN. Like most of the South, we called everything "coke" as a generic term, but there was another, even more common term. All soda pops were called "cold drinks" -pronounced "co'dranks." This referred only to soda pop, not to juices or any other, well, cold drinks. I've since lived in South Florida and New York City, where it was "soda," and Illinois, where it is "pop." I usually call it soda, but can never bring myself to call it pop; when I was a kid, everyone made vicious fun of anyone who said "pop" because it marked them as a Yankee (in our eyes- for some reason there was not such a stigma on soda.)

We were visiting the West Coast when we first came across Fish Tacos. Being from the Midwest (and this was a long time ago) we'd never heard of them and were quite leery of trying them. After some serious nudging from local friends, we broke down and gave them a try - and WOW! We've been practically addicted ever since!
