The Tam O'Shanter Inn is Scottish for Hamburger

wow. did some guy actually compare a burger to a preteen girl? classy.
anyway, I can't wait to try this burger! I love the not so distant history of LA and am glad to have learned the story of this place. I can't wait to go where Mary Pickford once dined...Thanks, Damon!

your first bad burger post! sounds like this joint is resting on novelty. I'm always dubious of restaurants that place emphasis on a kitschy exterior or theme but the ones that can pull that off and still serve outstanding food can be loads of fun. rare, but fun.

Ok. I'm new here. And I realize that Raiders757 has already been slammed for this. BUT, if that is a picture of medium rare, what does "rare" look like - a picture of a cow jumping over a campfire?

First. I would like to apologize to anyone I may have offended with my comments. I have had a lot of time on my hands these days, and have been drinking more than normal.

Of course, that is no excuse at all, and I don't mean to sound like I am using it as one. Maybe it is time to go back to my no beer during the work week rule. My gut sure wouldn't mind. I'm a nice person, even when buzzed, but for some reason when posting on the web, I can be over opinionated at times. It used to be music, now it's food. I'll do my best to do better from now on, as I really do enjoy this site. If I get out of line again, someone slap be down.

I didn't realize that I had posted said comments in "every single burger thread", and doubt I did, but I must have done it enough to warrent the response I got from Milkyway and others. I deserve their response, but I must say the "Raiders Fan" stereotype was little uncalled for. The Raider Nation are a brotherhood of fans like no other. Some are bad, but most are great people. You won't see many of us hiding our colors when times are down, like most other fans do. It's ad we get such a bad rep.

Anyhow...

I wish there was a way to shake hands, offer a few beers, and a burger cooked the way they liked it, as a show respect and appreciation.

Cheers to all! It's a firday night, and I have a pork shoulder to smoke for tomorrow. It's Happy times!

@Raiders757
Will you stop going to every single burger thread and talking about how the burgers are cooked incorrectly? Each person has burgers cooked to their own personal preference. And, if you don't like the way the burgers are cooked, then just keep your mouth shut and don't look at the pictures.

Damon,

You nailed it...all show and no go. I never liked Carney's food..I'd much rather eat at Fatburger or Tommy's. I also want to offer a moment of condolence, as I heard that Fat Jack's recently closed down.

I've only eaten at the Sunset location, but yeah the burger here was just ok, I preferred the dog to be honest. I'd hike it to Irv's for a much better burger in that area.

Nice to see not all blogs are raves. Thanks for keepin' it real and up holding the integrity of the hamburger fans here ;-) Great pics too.

I'm with diglounge, I'm interested to see what you say about Tommy's and their knock-offs. I'm drooling just thinking about a chili burger from them...

Though I think we all might agree that the idea of a reputable list of great hamburgers is relative, I have to say that that's why I enjoy AHT. I never imagine that they are positing a review as a best of, but more a survey of the burger landscape, which I like. I'm into the randomness of the burger trail I suppose. I might not go to Carney's (don't like a hot dog), but I'm glad to have some insight into that train that I pass by in my car regularly.

Carney's is hang over food. When you're already dehydrated, hung over and starving and what you need is grease. Also, I think their chili dogs are better than their burgers. If you want a Chili Burger go to the original Tommy's. Eating at the Tommy's in the Beverly Center just isn't the same.

For non-Angeleno readers, it must be stressed that neither location of Carney's has ever appeared on any reputable list of great Los Angeles hamburgers, and that like the late Tail of the Pup, its photoreadiness has gone a long way toward establishing its reputation. That being said, on those days when you feel like eating a B-minus hot dog in a train car overlooking the Strip, there's really no other choice.

I go to the WeHo location once in a blue moon (when I forget to bring lunch) because it's cheap and two steps from my work, but when I get my food and realize I need to add salt to EVERYTHING, it makes me wonder why I bothered in the first place. Nice post!

Carney's on Sunset always tasted good to me and my friends...but this is after a night on the strip...so maybe our senses were a tad dull....

Finally an Angeleno who can agree that Carney's is overrated at best. I never could figure out why I've been unimpressed with their burger while others have raved about it. Oddly I feel smarter after reading your review.. as though I'm getting closer to the secret to finding a good burger. Thanks, Damon, for the enlightenment!

It's funny, I drive past the WeHo spot all of the time and think: "I love that train... I wonder if i would like eating there... I bet the food is a let down." Too bad-- though holy tomato! That's a hearty slice, eh?

Those last 2 paragraphs were beautiful burger blogging btw.

The hot dogs are what to get at Carney's, not really a burger joint...
