Collection of Stuck Tic Tacs

You know what's sad? My family actually has a word for these: dekers. Used predominantly to describe the one sad piece of macaroni that somehow got glued to the inside bottom of a box of KD.

Vintage Candy Monday: Big Cherry

Yum! Every once in awhile I'll get a fresh raw almond that has that same flavour and I'll think, "Mmm ... cherries." It's funny (to me) that I have that association in one direction, but not the other.

Do Restaurants Get A Political Voice?

We just wrapped up a federal election (I'm in Toronto, Canada) and nearly every restaurant in my riding -- at least, those that chose to put up signs -- posted signs for every candidate. In my riding we had four major parties running, so that meant posting four signs in the window.

When I asked a local café owner about her decision to post them all, she said that she saw her role more as being an "election advocate" more than a partisan player. She just wanted people to know who all the candidates were, and remind her customers and passers-by that they had an important role to play on Oct. 14. I thought that was a winning attitude.

Got any kitchen magic that sets your cooking apart from others?

For any kind of pasta sauce, it's well-toasted garlic. I think there are many folks who are petrified of burning it and so add it to their recipes at the very last minute -- to me, that sort of feels like "cheating" the garlic out of its natural, edgy-but-mellow magnificence.

Barley couscous

I keep reading this subject as "Barely conscious" -- clearly more caffeine is indicated.

I've never tried barley couscous before, but now I'm curious! I've made many "risottos" using barley instead of arborio, and the taste has been great. Barley's mild nutty flavour really shines when it's toasted before using, so you might want to try that with your couscous.

Do women really want their man to smell like Chocolate?

Chocolate, no. My ex-bf used to wear a Chanel cologne that, by end of day, smelled like cinnamon cookies. Now THAT was yummy.

Is It Iced Coffee Weather?

I live in Toronto. We received more than two metres of snow last winter -- that's like six and a half feet -- and I drank iced coffee all winter long. It gets HOT under all that snow gear!

Ideas for introducing a picky eater to tomatoes?

For cooking, you might want to try passata (crushed tomatoes that have been strained to remove the seeds). It's usually sold in bottles or aseptic packaging (tetra paks). I prefer it to canned crushed tomatoes for use in sauces, as it usually doesn't have citric acid added and so has a slightly "mellower" flavour when cooked.

Nothing beats a freshly picked tomato, though, as others have noted. Comparing home grown vs. grocery store tomatoes is roughly like comparing fresh pineapple vs. canned pineapple. It's the same fruit, but a totally, totally different flavour profile.

If you're looking for a starter recipe, you could try Veg Times' Rustic Tomato Galette. I've got dozens of tomatoes now ripening on the vine and I can't wait to galette 'em. :-)

Yes, hard shaking might not get them unstuck, but usually, a few hard taps/smacks of the container on a hard surface can jostle them lose. Problem solved. Art ruined. :P

Flagel = Flat Bagel

I was taking a weekend in Bucks County Pa. When I stumbled upon a Deli named Bagel Junction in Newtown. Their Flagels and traditional Bagels are as good as any in NYC .The lines to the front door were there for a reason and their prices were a relief compared to NY. This place is like home away from home. If your craving NY food this is the place!

When I was 17, I had jaw surgery and my mom had to puree everything so I could at least "eat" with everyone else - so she pureed chinese food with homemade chicken broth, etc.

I would've adored something like this. Sounds like it would've been heaven. Next time I have any cupcakes, I will try this. Sounds sweet and yummy.

Where I live (central NY) we have Perry's ice cream, which has a wonderful flavor called "piece of cake". It is yellow cake flavored and has hunks of cake and fudgy chocolate frosting in it. So, no need to make this shake. Just buy a half gallon and dig in. (I usually go to the ice cream stand and get a scoop of this kind with a scoop of French Roast Coffee...thus, having coffee and cake) Mmmmmmmmmm!!

I say, Why not! I love cake and milk, cake and ice cream and I really love to take my homemade brownies with frosting and have it with ice cream and once in a while I will chop up the brownie and mix it in the ice cream. It is definitely a decadent treat and not meant for everyday. Is this any different than Cookie and Cream ice cream? I do think hand stirring would be better than blending but then that is my personal opinion. To each his own, I guess.

I have a serious sweet tooth, but I like to keep my cake separate from my ice cream. I even eat the icing relatively separate from the cake. I don't know why you'd want to muddle the flavors of a lovely cupcake in a milkshake.

While I still can chew, I intended to continue to do so!

OMG! I was once a breakfast cook in a nursing home and there was a category of resident we referred to as the "purees" because all their food had to be, yes, pureed. That included cakes, which was really gross.

So yeah, um, enjoy your pureed cupcake. The whipped cream looks good, but I'll pass.

A Salsa Golf Taste Test

@Jerzee: I'm not sure if I'm reading you correctly but this isn't a "new" sauce in Argentina and I don't think Matt was trying to imply that. It's a popular condiment throughout Argentina, widely used in conjunction with hearts of palm (salads, pizzas, tarts, etc.) not burgers. Is he not allowed to point that out? Like he said, it's all in ratios. A teaspoon of ketchup mixed with a cup of mayo is a lot different than an equal parts mixture. Plus, salsa golf isn't necessarily "ketchup" and mayo, it can be mayo mixed with tomato paste and other spices.

This mixture is very popular in Sicily as well. There it is known as salsa rosa and is a staple on panini of all types.
