Question of the Day: How important is service to the meal experience?

Agree that the service needs to match the restaurant, but a "step up" can save a meal. We went to a neighborhood pub the other night and the "grouper sprecial" was anything but. The waitress brought our plates even though she told the kitchen the fish wasn't acceptable. They told her it was ok -she told them to prepare another one. My husband tasted his and it was overcooked and w/o being told, she soon returned with the freshly prepared meal. Both of our entrees were deducted from the bill, again w/o a prompt from us. She went over and above to make sure we were compensated for the incovenience. We based her tip on what the bill would have been and we will go back again - all based on her taking charge of the entire situation from the minute the she picked up the plates from the kitchen.

What is your favorite kind of cookie?

"Mrs Field's" cookie - choc chips, chunks, walnuts. Great hearty cookie! My husband makes them at Christmas and I eat them through the holiday season - breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime snack, 2 at a time. I love 'em! When the last one is gone, I start eating healthy. And biscotti - ummmm

What did you have for lunch?

"Food day" at work. I brought corned beef that cooked all night in crock pot, sliced thin and freshly baked rye from Shapiro's Grey Poupon coarse ground mustard. So I had a great sandwich and Kerri's fabulous baked four cheese mac and cheese. Skipped the grocery store chocolate cake for a huge glazed donut from a local bakery. It was all very tasy and got me through the day just fine!

Do you like 'chunks' in your ice cream?

I have to agree with the no fruit in my ice cream, but it is acceptable ON my ice cream. My favorite thing in my ice cream - chocolate covered almonds in Swiss chocolate ice cream and real butter brickle. No chunks of brownies or cookies, caramel, marshmallow cream (ack), please. This makes me want to get in the car, drive back to the Quad Cities and fill the dry ice container with Whitey's ice cream.

Question of the Day: Where did you have your most romantic dinner?

A Greek restaurant in Olde Town Chicago with my first serious love. A small, dark, cozy place. The only thing I remember about the food was that I unknowingly ate a sardine that was on my salad - I said it was dark! We talked and laughed and fell more in love. Thanks for the memory.

New Orleans Jazz Fest: The 5 Must-Have Foods

"I love drinking, and I love New Orleans." — "New Orleans," Benjy Davis Project

Crawfish Monica is fantastic. And the Louisiana boiled crawfish will knock you on your bum in spicy ecstasy. I used to live in La., and moved to FL, so I get the seafood but not the spice.
The music, the food and the love...that's my kind of city. Plus, throw in a fight between a man dressed as a phallus and another as Spongebob...I'm there with bells on.

What is your favorite kind of cookie?

Grandma's Tea Cake Cookies if not in the baking mood. These are the best.

These tea cake cookies are made by a company out of Houston, Texas.

I've tried making them like my grandmother did but no luck. These people hit the spot if not better. Sorry grandmother. I received them within two days from order and they were delicious. I ordered a dozen for my family of four and they were gone before going to bed. These cookies are larger and tastier than the average cookie.

Best cookies I've tasted since grandmothers last batch in 1975.

Question of the Day: How important is service to the meal experience?

We went to a nice restaurant for the first time this past weekend. It was a special ocassion. This place is a expensive for us and it was a treat to ourselves to go there. Poor service ruined our experience. It was not very crowded though we had reservations. It took almost 10 minutes for the server to greet us at the table and take drink orders. Later when my husband needed another drink, a manager took his order and never came back. When I got my meal, I asked for a condiment and the waitress forgot and had to be reminded. I was holding off on digging in til she came back with it and everyone else finished their meals before me. The food was ok but not great. Good service could have made the whole night seem better and worth the money. We will not return.

What is your favorite kind of cookie?

Always go with chocolate chip for one of the cookies (maybe even a double batch?). I always love ginger or spice or molasses cookies (they're my favorite). And then maybe some sugar? The point is to be a people pleaser with these things--some people are allergic to nuts or really have a distaste for weird or complicated cookies.

What is your favorite kind of cookie?

i just thought of another cookie i recently had: white chocolate & craisins. AMAZING, but i don't have a recipe. sorry!

From Talk

What is your favorite kind of cookie?

great question!

couple suggestions...

i'll second kitkat's recommendation for the double tree cookies. they are phenomenal - and everyone will think you're a rockstar. that is, if you don't eat all the dough before you're done.

there's another 'thin mint' cookie i like to make that is a double chocolate cookie with a melted andes mint on top. fantastic! and the kids will love the green swirls on top. check out the recipe here.

What did you have for lunch?

Just getting over a cold but I finally had a chance to try the 4-Alarm Chicken Sandwich at Wendy's. Not bad but pass on the combo... their fries may be the worst in all of fast food. And that's not easy to do.
