Drinking the Bottom Shelf: Aalborg Akvavit

It doesn't qualify as "bottom shelf" (I got my bottle for around $30), but I'm a fan of North Shore distillery's Aquavit. We went to a distillery tour where they served a healthy tasting portion of all of their spirits, starting with vodka and ending with absinthe. The aquavit was second to last, and at the time I thought it was really smooth straight. Well, in short, it's not, but in a good bloody mary it's spectacular.

Level7, I'm really hoping that wasn't a typo and the penny actually becomes invincible.

Can you find this in the US? From their website, it looks like it's only available in the UK, and drinksupermarket.com showed a total of about $75 to ship one bottle overseas.

Bottom Shelf Beer: 7-Eleven's Game Day Ice Ale

Congratulations indeed!

And as far as generic beer, here in central Illinois, I've found something called "Beer 30 Ice" in select convenience and liquor stores of low repute. It comes in a purple can with a clock on it, as if to say "It's always time for a shitty beer."

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: La Quercia's Cured Meat Experience

All actual methods have already been mentioned, so I'm going to invent a prosciutto delivery method called the Swanson: Wrapped around bacon, served with a side of steak and whiskey.

Poll: How Long Would You Wait In Line?

Mizbee: I made my first quest to Hot Doug's the Monday after the Fourth of July, and we waited for at least an hour and a half. A wait has never been more worth it, and I wanted to get right back in line afterward like at an amusement park.

I also loved that there was an ice cream truck parked about two-thirds of the way down the line.

The Crisper Whisperer: What's a Cucuzza?

I don't remember how we ate it, but when I was young my mother used to grow cucuzza in her compost pile. The resulting squash towered over me, and come Halloween we decided to dress it up in a jaunty skirt and give it a face, and put it out on the lawn with a couple of giant pumpkin friends. Some darling teenagers made off with my darling cucuzza sister, but only managed to make it halfway down the driveway with the giant pumpkins before, hopefully, causing themselves permanent spine issues. This saga from my youth brought to you by an obscure Italian squash.

Have you ever just been completly insulted preparing a meal?

After reading this whole thread, I feel so lucky as far as the people I cook for now. My boyfriend's family eats very plain, typical Midwestern fare (potatoes often come from a bag, etc.); however, they have never complained when I've cooked for them. On the contrary, they're always extremely gracious and willing to try new things.

My one insulting experience came when I first cooked for guests, at about 12 or 13 years old; I painstakingly prepared an enormous vat of french onion soup, only to have my half-sister arrive hours late, eat a huge hearty bowl and then ask "What's the main course?" My mom still gets eye-twitches over that story; I was really not that offended.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 116: A Bite-by-Bite Rundown of My Calorie Intake

I just wanted to let you know that, even though you're in a frustrating place right now, your column continues to be an inspiration. I've gained 70 pounds in the last 5 years and just started my semi-annual attempt to get back under control. I gained all that weight not from eating Cheetos and McDonald's, but because when you buy a round of local goat milk Camembert, how do you NOT eat it all in one sitting slathered with red pepper jelly on mini toasts? The hardest part of approaching weight loss for me has been the thought that I would have to give up the food I love, and the concept of moderation is elusive -- I was raised to believe that anything worth eating is worth overeating -- and following your quest has helped me to understand how to conquer that mindset. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to make your journey public, but even when you're having a bum week you're still helping slovenly asses like me put down the bowl of pasta and get off the couch. Thank you.

David Lebovitz's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Second the love for Alton's "The Chewy," and I love freezing the cookies and then dunking them in lots of good milk straight out of the freezer.

Seriously Italian: Broccoli Romanesco

I just saw these at my local co-op the other week and believed them to be either alien food or actual aliens lying in wait for an unsuspecting hippie to take them home. I suppose I'm somewhat of a newbie when it comes to "unusual" ingredients, although I do have a 23-year-old co-worker who had never heard of or seen a fig until a few weeks ago when I brought in your delicious fig and almond cookies. At any rate, I'm going to go hunting for these tonight -- alien or not, if it gets an endorsement from Gina, I'll definitely try it!

Can Pumpkin Beer Be Serious Beer?

skizziks and others from the Chicago/St. Louis area should try the Schlafly Pumpkin Ale if you're able to hunt it down. I'm always disappointed not to see Schlafly products included in the Serious Eats beer taste tests, until I remember that its distribution radius doesn't extend far beyond the St. Louis area (I'm in central Illinois, and we only get limited distribution here).

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

The first cookbook I bought myself was Joy of Cooking, a scant two and a half years ago when I had my first apartment. I made sure to buy the older edition, because that was the one I'd grown up on, and the thought of an update frightened me. In my first independent kitchen, many of my recipes were culled from that volume, although now I find myself inspired by Serious Eats and epicurious more than any of my dozens of cookbooks.
