Rutabaga/Turnips: Way or No Way?

Way! I love the texture and fresh flavor...a great substitute for mashed potatoes which i'm not particularly fond of. Excellent with crispy shallots on top!

Sad because it is a really amazing experience (glad I was able to see it this summer!), but for the best. It is a chaotic mess of fish, workers, tourists, forklifts and 4 foot long knives. I nearly had my toes run over several times!

Try honey ice cream....it goes well with anything with berries. 2 cups cream, 1 cup milk, 2 large eggs, 3/4 cup honey honey (your choice what kind). Whip honey and eggs until well combined, scald cream and milk, temper honey-egg mixture and slowly add milk mixuture. Chill, freeze and enjoy!

Any recommendations for Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia?

Try Baan Khanitha, near Asoke station. It is reasonably priced and delicious, and has excellent service. The best part is the little appetizer they give you, which is a dried shrimp, a cilantro leaf, a slice of chili, a peanut and toasted coconut wrapped in little flavorful leaves. Delicious!

WAY. Love them raw or cooked. Raw with lots of salt and cooked with lots and lots of butter. Has anyone tried kohlrabi? Very good raw.

Way to mashed rutabaga with the Turkey, I just hate peeling it!!!

I was about to answer "no way" until I realized... I don't think I've ever had either. I had plenty of turnip greens as a kid (which I find bitter and just plain icky, even 20 years later), but not turnips. Huh. Guess I'll have to try some.

Love rutabagas. First, served in chunks with butter. Next day, maybe mashed. Turnips I'll buy for soups, but I don't usually serve them as a standalone veg. No idea why not.

Never had one. *cringe* You guys are gonna think I'm a fake eater if I keep responding so lamely.

Growing up, my family was big on processed foods, canned veggies, and what was on sale at the grocery. Turnips didn't come up.

Oh way!! I grew up with turnips and parsnips but when I was 14 I went to a friends house for dinner and the mother made rutabagas which I never knew of and they were wonderful. When I came back home and told my mother to buy them , I loved them she was horrified, she said in Austria they fed rutabagas to the pigs on a farm, when I convinced her to buy some and I cooked it up the way that my friends did it she became a fan herserlf.

WAY! A friend of mine used to make me mashed turnips with a little cream, butter a pinch of salt and loads of fresh cracked pepper (a pepper blend she made herself). One of my favorite veggie dishes ever.

Mashed with butter and pepper (called swede here in England, turnip for my Irish father and neeps in Scotland) or roasted with other root vegetables around a joint of meat. Delicious.

Way! I love them turnips and rutabagas. I'm making a pork roast in the crockpot right now and I think turnip would be great with that! Now I'm getting hungry... :-)

Oh, forgot to say - it's definitely "WAY" for me!:-)

Growing up, we often had mashed swede - still love it! Mum also often added swede and turnips to stews and roasts, and now I do it as well - nothing beats root veg in a good stew!

@Esmeralda ~ you are correct - Swede is rutabaga. A member of the cabbage and turnip families. It's explained on wikipedia.

Way to turnips. I've eaten small (young?) turnips which I enjoy roasted with other root vegetables or in stew. Here in the UK, I've seen larger turnips and swedes (rutabaga?). I'm still a little confused about the difference between a swede a large turnip. Never had them raw but I'll have to give it a try.

Raw! Never tried them raw. As a child, I used to like raw potatoes (just grabbed a few chunks when Mom was preparing them). I had forgotten about that. I have rutabagas to cook for Christmas. Going to try to remember to try a little raw.

From Talk

way! I enjoy them. I have had them mashed and then I have also added them into pot roasts and I liked them that way.
