Where To Find Fried Pickles on the East Coast

I'd add "just about anywhere in Memphis" or "any catfish place in Mississippi" to the list, though the quality varies. The spears just don't work for me, especially if you're getting them as an appetizer. All that water in the cucumber keeps them nuclear hot for a long time after they hit the table. By the time they cool off, your fried catfish has already come.

Fast food regional items - do you try?

Does anyone remember when McDonalds would roll out some fancy ethnic themed sauces with their McNuggets? I can remember Chinese and Mexican, but there may have been more.

In Memphis you can get a country ham or spicy chicken biscuit at McDonald's. Biscuits and gravy used to be available, and may still be though I haven't had that hankering lately. The chicken biscuit holds up well against Chick Fil-A's.

I traveled in Europe with a hypoglycemic friend. We had to eat every 3-4 hours, and ended up at McDonald's fairly often because the bathrooms were free and clean. Plus, you can get an idea of the exchange rate by comparing McDonald's items to ones back home (probably a bigger deal before the Euro).

One of my favorite European McDonald's treats is beer. After that, the McItalia I had in Paris was good (with "motzarella" cheese and tomato sauce). The McKroket in Amsterdam is frightful but oddly compelling. In Austria, there was something called a McFarmer that may have been made out of pork.

Years later, I had a very tasty mcchicken big mac in Beirut.

Isn't this pretty much the same thing as the Martha Stewart $40 crackncheese?

Doggy Style Hot Dogs in Memphis, which opened in a space formerly occupied by Chitlins N' Thangs. This was a great place to get a really good chicago style hot dog at a great price in a really attractive space. The name killed it for me though. The last thing I want to be reminded of while eating a hot dog is sexual activity.

It closed.

Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese

This recipe has a devoted underground following. In our house, it's referred to as "$30 mac and cheese" because of the raw ingredient price, or "crack and cheese" for its addictive properties.

Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese

You know what I think is funny? A month or so ago, I watched Martha on the Next Food Network Star show, telling everyone that she does not "do" comfort foods. (One of the chef's prepared a "Sloppy Joe" dinner) Maybe if it had gruyere cheese in it, perhaps she would have found it acceptable....

Nonetheless, her recipes are usually quite good. I just find it interesting that Martha has begun making casual fare, even though it's not "her type of food."

Still no answer to the question of which combination of cheeses one should use.

Thanks.

Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese

This is a great recipe. I do add a tsp on dry mustard. That's the only addition. Also, I don't know where you guys buy your cheese but for what you get, this is not expensive. It's just mac & cheese for goodness sake, go for it.

Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese

I make this recipe all the time, but I use the New York sharp white cheddar and substitute sharp yellow cheddar in place of the Gruyere. It's cheaper and the kids seem to like it better. I also don't use the bread crumbs on the top. I just put extra cheese.

Where To Find Fried Pickles on the East Coast

In Florida -- the Gator's Dockside in Lake Mary, FL, just added a basked of fried kosher dills to their menu. They were about 2-inch rounds, between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick, fried quickly in a flavorful batter and still crisp inside, served with a cup of ranch dressing. We really enjoyed them, even if they sat a bit heavy afterward. But they were the highlight of the meal, and went wonderful with a pitcher of Yuengling...the dill flavor lasted quite a while on the palate.

Gator's Dockside also has EXCELLENT chicken wings, cooked dry-fried, batter-fried, or grilled, and tossed in a variety of sauces. Service is par for the course for a neighborhood sports bar.

Tony Packo's in Toledo, Ohio, offers their original pickles and peppers deep fried, with an assortment of dips (ranch, salsa, or spicy ketchup). The pickles are a spicy dill, but personally, I'd rather eat the fried pepper pieces and leave the fried pickles to my dinner companions!
