Has Anyone Had Sister Schubert's Rolls or Marshall's Biscuits?
Sister Schubert Cinnamon rolls are great too.
I'm glad the article mentioned serving them with pork tenderloin. That's always been a tradition in our family (at least since we found out about the sister and pork that you could leave a little pink).
Pork tenderloin marinated in OJ Concentrate and fresh chopped rosemary, charred on a grill, sliced, and stuffed in a yeast roll is very good thing and great for having company over.

That's like saying what's Thanksgiving without hot dogs and burgers.
You meant to say, either "What's barbecue without slaw and beans." or "What's a fish fry without slaw and hush puppies."
A barbecue is a pork sandwich that comes with slaw on it.

Where To Find Fried Pickles on the East Coast
I'd add "just about anywhere in Memphis" or "any catfish place in Mississippi" to the list, though the quality varies. The spears just don't work for me, especially if you're getting them as an appetizer. All that water in the cucumber keeps them nuclear hot for a long time after they hit the table. By the time they cool off, your fried catfish has already come.
Ballpark Food: Home Runs and Strike Outs
Barbecue nachos from Autozone Park in Memphis (AAA Cardinals) hold up against any ballpark food in the nation.
Fast food regional items - do you try?
Does anyone remember when McDonalds would roll out some fancy ethnic themed sauces with their McNuggets? I can remember Chinese and Mexican, but there may have been more.
Fast food regional items - do you try?
In Memphis you can get a country ham or spicy chicken biscuit at McDonald's. Biscuits and gravy used to be available, and may still be though I haven't had that hankering lately. The chicken biscuit holds up well against Chick Fil-A's.
I traveled in Europe with a hypoglycemic friend. We had to eat every 3-4 hours, and ended up at McDonald's fairly often because the bathrooms were free and clean. Plus, you can get an idea of the exchange rate by comparing McDonald's items to ones back home (probably a bigger deal before the Euro).
One of my favorite European McDonald's treats is beer. After that, the McItalia I had in Paris was good (with "motzarella" cheese and tomato sauce). The McKroket in Amsterdam is frightful but oddly compelling. In Austria, there was something called a McFarmer that may have been made out of pork.
Years later, I had a very tasty mcchicken big mac in Beirut.
Essentials: Ina Garten's Mac & Cheese
Isn't this pretty much the same thing as the Martha Stewart $40 crackncheese?
The Best Worst Restaurant Names Ever
Doggy Style Hot Dogs in Memphis, which opened in a space formerly occupied by Chitlins N' Thangs. This was a great place to get a really good chicago style hot dog at a great price in a really attractive space. The name killed it for me though. The last thing I want to be reminded of while eating a hot dog is sexual activity.
It closed.
The Culture of Free Food Court Chicken Samples
The Cajun Grill with Chinese food is a chain? Wow...I thought it was just a Memphis thing.
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
This recipe has a devoted underground following. In our house, it's referred to as "$30 mac and cheese" because of the raw ingredient price, or "crack and cheese" for its addictive properties.
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
@lemonfair, totally, if you imagine a 9X13 dish parcelled into 12 servings. It's really decadent.
I served this the other day with chili. In making the mac and cheese, I realised I was out of white bread, and substituted some jalapeno cheddar bread I'd bought on a lark at the grocery earlier in the week. The result was awesome! ANd the jalapeno flavour really echoed the peppers in the chili.
I was convinced this would be too much sauce, but somehow, those noodles drank it up.
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
pdmako: ...sorry, this is not Ina Gartens mac and cheese recipe! Check your facts...recipes are all on line and available. Ina is terrific but MS's mac and cheese is an original and the best ever!
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
Well, right back attcha, Chiff. If you're using the Chat N Chew one, I'm going to try that now.
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
Now you've piqued my interest. I always used the Chat N Chew Mac & Cheese recipe but with an endorsement like Adam's who can resist?? The C&C recipe also makes a ginormous batch and I frequently change up the cheeses somewhat.
Giant Cheetos vs. Regular Cheetos
Try Tastees - they are like Cheetos. People in the UK are loving them!!
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
I'm surprised that 1 pound of pasta really makes enough for 12. Do those of you who make it think this is an accurate serving size?
Mastering Barbecue Side Dishes
Hush puppies with BBQ? Never heard of it. You only get them around here with catfish and occasionally other seafood.
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
I have made this mac and cheese dozens of times. Several times, when I've had fancy dinner parties, I make this for the kids but the adults just can't resist it.
I also use it as a clean out my cheese drawer recipe and I've put up to 8 different kinds of cheese that were getting to the ends of their lives -- even goat cheese. And I totally agree with the nutmeg suggestion - and must add. I'm salivating just writing about this.
Mastering Barbecue Side Dishes
I miss hush puppies, but I tend to think of them as a seafood side...growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, where your seafood choices were Red Lobster or Long John Silver's probably contributed to that.
I also think every barbecue should have at least one nice salad with it, just for balance. Fresh tomato, fresh mozzarella, some olives and balsamic vinegar. A really good caesar with crunchy croutons and thick, spicy dressing.
A good friend used to have barbecues all the time, and had one of those expensive grills with a burner on the side. He'd cook mac n' cheese with bits of grilled kielbasa sliced into it. It would simmer for hours, with him adding various cheeses and pots of cream to it all the time. At the end, you could slice it. But it was delicious.
I cannot claim any true Southern US credentials...I lived in DC for about 5 years. But if you put a pulled pork sandwich in front of me, I will be asking for slaw. Lots of slaw. Armies of slaw. I love mopping up the spilled bits--the juice and the sauce and the meat--with a big helping of slaw.
Also, no Hoppin' John?
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
I'm not surprised to hear that Ina Garten was the originator of Martha's recipe. I don't like watching Ina on TV, but I love her recipes (try her French Potato Salad, it's wicked good).
Once we tried this M&C, there was no debate--just a natural consensus within the family that this was The One. My wife's notes indicate she always substitutes Swiss for the Gruyere/Romano. She always uses freshly grated nutmeg (it really does make a BIG difference), If you like lots of crust (we do), cook it in a broad, shallow casserole dish. And regarding freezing, it can be stored in the freezer cooked or uncooked. It's so good, it'll make your tongue smack your mama!
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
No blasphemy there, galadiman. Why don't you try both and let us know!
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
Pardon my blasphemy, but would Shells be better than elbow macaroni?
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
Try rolling your buttered bits of bread in Roquefort, Blue Cheese, Dolce Verde or Gorgonzola. Then bake for a bit before adding. These croutons also work great for soups. Add a little crushed garlic if you like.
Martha Stewart's Macaroni and Cheese
Off topic, but as regards the request for a crab recipe; try a seafood bread pudding. Butter your dish, layer buttered (crustless) bread and seafood (crab, browned shrimp, lobster all work well, as do salmon, tuna and any whitefish, smoked or unsmoked) with gruyere, and top with sharp cheddar after pouring a full pot of cream over the whole thing. Add pepper and whatever spices you like. You can add a few whipped eggs if you like to give it a more 'custardy' feel. Bake until brown and bubbly. And don't skimp on the cheese. You can add some grated parmesan as well, but then again, I regard most food as a parmesan delivery vehicle. Chuck in some veg, too, if you like...peas and cut broccoli work very well, but you can be creative.
Where To Find Fried Pickles on the East Coast
I love fried pickles but I thought your comment about spears was really weird because I find the exact opposite to be true. The chips tend to get soggy and cold much faster than the spears. Which made sense to me because the spears are crunchier in the first place. I actually avoid places that have chips. Hooters for example has the chips. Which almost everywhere has a hooters so there you go but I don't go because I want the real thing. The full on spear and if you're lucky and you're at Little River BBQ in Townsend, TN then you get the special sauce too (some sort of sweet mustard). It's absolutely the best. Chips really?!!? So confusing....
Giant Cheetos vs. Regular Cheetos
So i purchased a bag of disappointment for $2.50. The bag was labeled
"Giant Cheetos".
After seeing the awesome and over the top television advertisements for giant cheetos, I was super excited to get my hands on a bag!
I went to my local market and was glad to see bags of them available after seeing the new commercial a day prior.
Since the bag of giant cheetos is opaque, I decided to squeeze the bag a little, to feel how big these "Giant" Cheetos actually were.
They didn't feel giant at all!
After i felt up the bag, proceeded to crush one of the giant cheetos between my thumb and forefinger.
It took quite a bit of effort to bust one of the cheetos, through the bag.
So I thought ," Damn! this stuff is hard as hell.", and then I left the store with out the bag of the Giant cheetos.
Curiosity got the best of me, and i was back in the snack isle the very next day to make the purchase.
So I open the bag of giant cheetos, and it smells nice.
I take a bite of one, and I was immediately put off buy the harsh texture, and lack of flavor.
I tried another one, this time i popped it in my mouth.
BAD IDEA!
Giant Cheetos are worst than Captain Crunch with out milk!
So i tried to pawn the giant cheetos to my dad aka: The human garbage disposer.
After he took a bite, he asked me when the expiration date was, because he flet they tasted and felt stale.
I just had purchased and opened them that day, and the bag said "NEW" !
So yeah..... the idea of a Giant Cheeto was nice, but i wish they were bigger and softer.
I feel Cheeted by the Cheeto Cheetah.
I'm going to write frito-lay explaining my disappointment with Giant Cheetos.

Has Anyone Had Sister Schubert's Rolls or Marshall's Biscuits?
Ok, I just have to mix it up a bit here: Frozen biscuits? Are you kidding? People make biscuits from scratch precisely because they come together so quickly and are so tasty! Buying frozen biscuits is sort of like buying frozen toast! (Another phenomenon I'll never understand. The instructions for preparing pre-made toast that you buy in the freezer section of the grocery store: put into the toaster and, well, TOAST.) Biscuits are simple to make from scratch and I guarantee homemade biscuits will taste better. My husband, a native Kentuckian, says no true Southerner would make frozen biscuits, and serving them to guests would be just plain SHAMEFUL!

Sister Schubert's are amazing - I think the yeast rolls that come in a pan are better than the ones that come loose in a bag. I don't love the sausage as much as most people, but the cinnamon rolls are the best things EVER.
I've actually been to their headquarters in Luverne, Alabama - almost as exciting as it sounds, trust me - but they were not having tours that day. :(

Thank you all for the information. Now I need to order some of these. Some of you have said you have ordered or started to order some of these breads. Can you please provide me a good website to go to if they don't have them at Walmart here in Omaha, NE.
Thank you and HAGD,
Has Anyone Had Sister Schubert's Rolls or Marshall's Biscuits?
Both Sister Schuberts and Marshalls are great products. As a matter of fact, Marshalls has been a staple here in Mobile, AL since at least the 1930's and are made practically in my back yard. Anyone who grew up here is familiar with them, and even the local school system has used Marshall's recipes for yeast rolls and biscuits since the 40's.

But where can you buy them in the NYC area? I searched and cannot find anywhere close to here? Any tips from a tri-stater?

i love sister schubert's. i haven't had them since moving out of the south, so i think i'm going to check for them at my local grocery store after work ... wish me luck!

For Chicagoans, Sister Schubert yeast rolls are available at The Fresh Market in Northbrook.

It's the sausage yeast rolls that make this brand worth buying. They are the closest thing to a Kolache that I've found mass produced and outside the state of Texas.
