Southern California has acorns for sure. The squirrels are starting to freak me out.

Nom nom nom.

In more coherent terms, Chinese bakery sponge cake is so light and delicious that I could probably eat a good portion of that bag ;D

... okay, maybe I'm the only dissenter here (maybe Roboppy agrees?), but that sounds.. kind of good, albeit in a "use in moderation" type of way.

Sliced strawberries and bananas over vanilla ice cream. The only difference between then and now: back then it was cheap ice cream, and now I tend to go for Hagen Daaz. mmm.

Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us: The Thanksgiving Special

The fried cranberry sauce and fried stuffing just don't sound appealing. Actually, they sound terrifying. I love cranberry sauce and stuffing, don't get me wrong, but the old "Everything tastes better fried" seems wrong here.

A beginner cook tackling a Thanksgiving for two, any menu ideas?

Good luck with your first Thanksgiving dinner! I agree with everyone that suggested a small turkey. It's not that much different from roasting a chicken, in my opinion. I usually put butter and herbs under the skin, stuff the inside with a quarter onion, half an orange, garlic, bay leaf, celery and carrot, then cook breast side down in a roasting pan.

Fake or not, it's quite funny. I love the nonchalant can tossing at random times - on the phone? Toss a can. Walking? Toss a can. Getting up to give a bro hug? Toss a can.

Durian completely freaks me out now that I've tried it twice. I was hoping the first time was a fluke, but the second time confirmed it - I can't eat durian.

I heard that they cure their own pastrami. YES. I am so taking my brother to this place when we're both back home visiting our parents.

Great Sicilian Slices at Sal's Pizzeria in Mamaroneck

Having lived in Mt. Vernon, I did visit Sal's once. I can say with confidence that the Sicilian slice at Joe's Fleetwood pizza in Mt. Vernon is superior. It's less greasy and the cheese that they use is less stringy.

Gourmet White Castle Hamburger Stuffing Is Just a Bad Idea

So let me get this straight: you took a pretty tame recipe that's roughly equivalent to traditional sausage stuffing (it calls for no pickles, and sliders don't come with ketchup or mustard). Then you added beer, frozen fries, ketchup, and cheddar cheese. And this is making it "gourmet"? Yuck, of course that's a bad idea--you broke all of the bones of the recipe while emphasizing its superficial trashiness.

From A Hamburger Today

Gourmet White Castle Hamburger Stuffing Is Just a Bad Idea

I've gotta say I'm a little surprised that you made improvements to the recipe by radically changing it before you even sampled the original. Looking over your ingredients list shows you didn't really "get it", have you even had a White Castle hamburger before?

The White Castle meat certainly isn't sirloin, it's something entirely different than any other meat you've ever tasted. There are a number of other qualities to a WC hamburger that you have to experience first hand.

You say you can't believe people eat this. People don't eat what you made, they eat White Castle stuffing in a handful of different configurations.

I've made the original recipe myself several times and think it pretty good, the last time I made it I took the stuffing out and separated it into loose balls. I then cooked it till each ball was a little crispy on the outside, it was really good. Better, I think, than the original. An improvement to something I'd tried, not just looked at on paper.

In short, if you are going to nose-dive into low cuisine, trust the locals.

does Sal's have a second branch in White Plains? There's a pretty damn good sicilian slice on mamaroneck ave in white plains that has been there at least ten years or so...

Grandma Crocetti's Italian fried dough cookies., cenci. So good. And the best part was the powdered sugar you got all over yourself when you ate the cookies.

It is a tie between my mother's cinnamon rolls -- made with raisins and just the right amount of vanilla glaze -- and her recipe for blonde brownies with chopped walnuts and chocolate chips. I just made my mother's blonde brownie recipe for my three year old daughter and she can't get enough of them. Eating them reminds me of my childhood.

No Acorns in US This Year?

There are reportedly no acorns in New England, Virginia, Washington DC, New York, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Oregon, parts of Canada including Nova Scotia, and Germany. I can only speak for my city and that is Cleveland, Ohio. There are NO acorns in Cleveland for the first time in my life. Very credible sources (like scientists) report in an article that there are no acorns to be found in an area, and then someone in a comment section will say they have loads of acorns in their yard in the same area.
I'm going with my own observations. There are no acorns in Cleveland, Ohio.

Here in Central NY we had tons of chesnuts. So many that we had a hard time getting the grass to grow because of our chesnut "carpets." Our driveway was a mess.

wow... it did take a while to trudge through this massive posting. the content is good and i like the mix if context and atmosphere with the hamburger review. that said, i can't imagine this posting couldn't have been maybe half as long... maybe i'm wrong...

as for Oinkster... i really like this place. great fries and i love their condiments and sauces... i can't say that i'm a huge fan of their burger though... i think I’d opt for their pastrami sandwich or their Reuben.
