Why are you a serious eater?
I come from an Italian family where every aspect of life revolves around food. When I went to college, money was tight, so I started really getting into making everything from scratch which ended up being cheaper and much better than typical college cuisine. My roommates loved me for it. I enjoy being able to make food for myself and others, there is something very personal about making a meal for someone. I also find being in the kitchen a total stress reliever, and I always find myself talking about food to people (most of whom look at me like I have seven heads).
Foodie Vacation
italy (cinque terre fulfills all requirements), also tuscany without the beach! or the south of france!

hot sauce on pizza is delicious (on occasion), but definitely NOT Tabasco. It tastes like spicy vinegar, but not like hot sauce. One time in college, one of my roommates finished my bottle of Franks and tried to hide this by pouring Tabasco in the empty bottle. Big mistake.

When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?
My boyfriend and I go out to eat often with our two best friends, and we always try to order four different meals, so as to all taste everything. This seems totally normal to me, but at the same time, I would never do it with someone else (even sharing with our families is off limits).
Study finds: Organic food is no healthier than conventional
I would much rather pay the money difference to buy produce grown without chemicals. It really bothers me when people just make food decisions based on money alone. You are supporting the degradation of the environment, and doing your own body harm by ingesting these chemicals.
And when it comes to grass fed vs factory farmed, organic or not, factory farmed meat is horrible for you, the animal, and the earth.
Make the right choices!!
Should Hot Dogs Carry Warning Labels?
if you're going to put warning labels on hot dogs, you ought to put warning labels on every other packaged and processed food on the market.
What makes you feel better?
anything with cheese (mac and cheese, cheeseburger, cheese and crusty bread...), hearty italian american comfort foods, salty foods, chocolate..... and pretty much anything that is bad for me
best spots for nyc restaurant week?
I ate at Pera during the last restaurant week - the food was good, but the service was the worst I had ever experienced. First off, I had to specifically ask for a restuarant week menu (I'm from Philly, where restaurant week is prided and menu is readily available). We were given our menus from a very disgusted waitress (she seemed to frown upon the fact that we were out for a deal). We ordered two bottles of wine throughout the course of our meal (for four people), we asked for tap water, but were charged almost $40 for bottled water that the waitress kept refilling in our cups - despite the fact that we did not want it. And to top it all off, we were told off the bat that the food included on the restaurant week menu would not be enough to fill us, so we needed to order multiple sides to make the meal worthwhile. We ended up spending WAY more money than expected for ok food and horrible service.
Like I said, I'm from Philly and we enjoy restaurant week every time it comes around. NYC should take a lesson - in Philly, we've never spent more than the cost of four meals, alcohol of choice, and tip - in NYC, we were WAY overcharged for WATER, plus a bunch of 'extras' needed to make a complete meal.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
i know it's terrible, but taco bell. it's really the only kind of food court / fast food / rest stop type of food that doesn't make me sick
How many times a day do you eat?
weekdays and weekends are WAY different. I find myself eating all the time on the weekends (unless we are out actually doing something...)
During the week, I usually eat a light breakfast (hard boiled egg or greek yogurt or soy milk), snack on a handful of almonds before lunch, lunch is leftovers from night before or salad plus a piece of fruit. snack on some cheese when i get home from work and then we make dinner which varies but is usually lots of protein and veggies (although we have the occassional cravings for some carb packed dinners once in a while).
Cooking your own food = rare?
I cook every night as well, and I really enjoy hosting, making things from scratch, and baking for the fun of it. My co-workers, friends, and boyfriend's family all find this completely insane. I really do think it is unfortunate that so many people now rely on processed foods and restaurants/take out. We eat way better food than anyone I know - and for a fraction of the cost. There is such gratification to eating something you made with your own hands, and enjoying recipes and techniques that were passed down from previous generations.
What Weird Family Foods Did You Grow Up Thinking Were Normal?
Grandmother's specialty: Scrambled eggs with slices of hot dog...
Dad's specialty: Grape jelly and american cheese on white bread...
Fortunately, my mom is italian and she never introduced us to anything too strange.
Threadless T-Shirt Giveaway: A Piece of Cake

What would you eat for 30 days?
Lobster with melted butter. no question.
What would you eat for 30 days?
Are we allowed to pick variations on the the staple ingredients? If so, then some kind of rice, a vegetable (probably broccoli or green beans because I'm lazy) and a protein (cheese, chicken or tofu). And a multi vitamin.
What would you eat for 30 days?
It's not like he ate sausage and cheese (only) pizza every day. He put other toppings on top of his sausage pizza.
Pizza may not be as expansive as my ramen 2 times daily for 3 months, as I changed up the flavor and ingredients every day, so it never got old.
What would you eat for 30 days?
I was going to offer oatmeal... but thats when i thought it was one meal a day. That would be a challenge for me. This whole nothing but one food, i dont think i could handle it for a week.
What would you eat for 30 days?
i couldn't eat the same thing for EVERY meal everyday for an entire month. i don't know how that guy did it with the pizza.
What would you eat for 30 days?
Brie, a baguette and a good crisp apple, oh yeah...and a nice glass of wine!
What would you eat for 30 days?
We probably do this more then we think. My morning habit is black coffee and dry high fiber cereal..the same Monday through Sunday. :o)
Obviously not the only thing I eat in a day, but I've been doing this for years fro breakfast. Black coffee - same cup of dry fiber cereal. Black coffee - same cup of dry fiber cereal...on and on. I have no desire to change.
It's like a day in Groundhog day.
What would you eat for 30 days?
Cheese pizza three times a day, definitely. Probably cheeseburgers (Shake Shack!) as well. If hunger were not an issue I could eat ice cream, brownies, or oreos with milk 3x daily as well.
What would you eat for 30 days?
Pizza. But GOOD pizza, I couldn't just settle for any pizza like that guy did. I love pizza and am very particular about it.
Why are you a serious eater?
Seriously? You've NEVER heard the phrase "wow - those are some serious eats" or "you can get some serious eats at the diner on 441"...? I find that hard to believe. I guess it's possible because I've never heard some of the phrases popular on the west coast like "rode hard and put away wet" (to describe someone disheveled looking) or "f*ck me running" to describe.... I have no idea.
Why are you a serious eater?
Call me a pedant, but isn't the term "serious eater" just something that www.seriouseats.com just made up as a marketing slogan? It doesn't have any intrinsic meaning to it, if you catch my drift. By saying you have an interest in food you say pretty much the same thing. Far be it for me to harsh everyone's mellow, of course...
Why are you a serious eater?
@jack - who cares how they look at you? As long as they enjoy food with you and celebrate your ability to prepare it. Some of my friends don't understand my obsession with food - but they're all happy I have it. (PS Fellow Italian here!)
Foodie Vacation
Awesome thread. Please tell us what you decided, Wilma.
Foodie Vacation
Burlington Vermont. One day my husband and I drove all over the state and purchased 16 artisan cheeses in 14 hours. We used priceline and got a crazy deal on a hotel, lake Champlain was right down the street, tons of local food and Montreal was only 2 hrs away. We loved it!
Foodie Vacation
Try for the Southern part of India, such as Kerala. Totally different experience from what you would imagine India to be like.
If that's too expensive, I second Lisbon. It's my favorite European city. Ginja and roasted chicken from Bon Jardim is my ultimate last meal.
Foodie Vacation
Grand Case, St. Martin. Cheap flights, wonderful and cheap hotels once you are there, great beaches, very international (lots of French people vacation there), great beach bars with live local bands, and of course, really really good French food. Yes, some of the food/presentations can be slightly dated (like probably avant garde in the 90's), but foie gras, langoustines, Sauternes on the beach by torchlight is pretty incredible.

I always prefer Franks or Melinda's.
Video: Tabasco Singing Pepperoni Pizza Commercial
I use a little Frank's from time to time, but the bigger secret is to use a little mustard, that's right mustard. Use whichever you really, really like, Grey Pooped-on, deli, hot or sweet, it depends on your personal taste. Then perhaps, add some thin tomato slices, a little red onion and a dash of hot sauce and you have created something extraordinary. It's not for everyone, but then what is? Still if it is your taste, particularly you generally ignored vegetarians, then you have found something special. Enjoy something different!
When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?
I'm a sharer. With family and some friends I will share any of mine and try any of theirs, often finishing the left over bits or cleaning up other peoples plates. Sometimes I steal food from others without asking, but knowing that those people won't mind. Sharing goes beyond food, and extends to utensils in my family, I know its not for everyone, but it works out great for us.
When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?
If I'm eating with friends or my boyfriend (which is almost always who I'm eating with when I'm out), then I'll offer a taste of whatever I'm eating, ESPECIALLY if I like it. Share the wealth! I have like-minded friends, so they usually offer back - if they don't, I don't even usually notice. I may ask for a small taste if it's something I really want to try, but I'm not militantly pro- or anti-sharing.
When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?
sharing does not bother me at all...just DON"T eat from my personal dish in front of me...or try to feed me off your fork/chopsticks..I will leave !!!
When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?
One of my favorite "shared" meals was at NOPA in SF. All three of us agreed upon three dishes...we would eat and then say switch and we would move the plate to the next person...probably not for everyone but so good for us!!! I love eating with good friends.
