Mandatory Brunch Tip: Way or No Way?

no way - if i get poor service, i should be able to tip lower. i don't think i've ever had service so bad i've not tipped altogether, but i think it can be justified (though very, very rarely).

a reliable go-to mix is nice to have.

for a "real" pumpkin cupcake recipe, i recently made these and thought they weren't very complicated and very tasty http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/11/pumpkin-cupcakes/

Should Bagel Shops Charge For Toasting?

charging extra to toast a bagel makes about as much sense as charging someone to check a single piece of luggage when they're flying hundreds of miles and intend to be away for several days.

Lady M Cake Boutique Cheesecake: The Last Cut Is The Deepest

there is something nice about her trying to make all 3 slices equal, so that there would be no fighting back at the office! however it may have been more polite (or just less weird) to ask if you minded if one of the slices had a little extra and offered to cut it down.

Can Pumpkin Beer Be Serious Beer?

i agree completely on the southern tier pumpkin - too EXTREME! of a beer for my taste - and i thought their creme brulee beer was sweet! they do however, make an amazing chocolate beer that tastes just like chocolate.

fisherman's pumpkin stout is one of my favorites - not too pumpkin-y. i think it's the only pumpkin stout out there (?).

ithaca brewing also makes a nice pumpkin beer but i'm not sure if it's sold in bottles.

Should A Service Charge Be Included at Restaurants So That Servers Can Have Benefits?

i'm with southpaw. when i dine out, i pay for the food, i tip on the service, and deal with the requisite sales tax. that's enough for me. if restaurant owners need to find a way to cover costs, just take it out of profits, or if that's not good enough, raise the prices up a notch and hope it doesn't affect business.

Prime Meats Burger: One Step Away from Greatness

i ordered the burger for lunch a week ago. my only complaint was it was too large and unwiedly to eat so i cut it in half. bad move, it was incredibly unstable after that! otherwise i gobbled it up, despite my sloppiness.

wasn't a fan of the spaetzle. i'll admit i'm a bit of a purist, and thought it would have been better with less cheese. it wasn't even a mac-and-cheese consistency, more like a spaetzle soup. we didn't finish it (2 of us were sharing and it's not a large portion).

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

My local pizza man, Exclusive Pizza on 181, was re-inspected. He originally failed due to some crazy violation in the basement of the building next door (actually my building.) Somehow because his services are connected to the basement, a violation in the next door building became points on his inspection. (?)

THEN, when they came back to re-inspect, he passed but got dinged on the chicken rolls, slices, etc., he's got under the glass counter. It's nuts.

I'd like everyone to recall a couple of years ago the vendors in Chinatown getting an exemption on hanging room temperature meats in their windows for "cultural sensitivity" reasons. Councilman Lui, a true dumbass and a foul example of what's wrong with our elective officials, lead the charge to get health inspectors to back off on the room temp pigs hanging all over the place.

Why doesn't a slice of pizza fall under the same cultural exception?

I actually think unwritten culture-based enforcement exceptions to health laws (or any laws) are bullshit, but if you give one, how can you not give others?

From Slice

it's like speeding. the man can pick any pizzeria out in the city and write a ticket. I know roebling pizza in wburg makes pies one at a time. so does amore in flushing. but uhhh, that's about it. the rest are fucked.

From Slice

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

There's so much salt in pizza between the cheese, sauce, and meat (if there's a meat topping), nothing could possibly be in there. Seriously, would there also be a reasonable amount of time they could be safely in the display case, say a couple hours? the good ones go quickly anyway.

From Slice

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

a certain well-reviewed here Park Slope pizza joint now has a "display only" sign on their countertop glass. of course, it's not display only and the sign is obviously not for customers.

From Slice

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

nope. i'm saying that i would only be able to get a slice at the places in my brooklyn neighborhood during peak hours (maybe 12-2pm and 6-7pm, and definitely not late at night). that would suck.

From Slice

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

@sloppy-- so your saying 49th street does not have the foot traffic? Traffic in NYC should never be a prob. Make smaller pies cut in 6 from 2pm to 4pm.

MePa? Really? Am I the last person to find out that every neighborhood now has a two syllable nickname?

From Slice

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

@pizzalove -- difara's gets a *little* more traffic than most pizzerias so it's not an apt comparison. your average corner place would still have problems during non-rush hours when it may take an hour to clear a slice pie, even if the toppings are added afterwards.

From Slice

This is from Gaslight in MePa. Close them down, but leave the good pizzeria's alone.

meh. If it's not on the banned list, it's merely a recommendation. The banned list is here: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Obviously, gravy, cranberry sauce, and the like is still subject to the 3.4 oz, clear baggie rule. Now that I've seen this ridiculousness, I'm going to bring some sauce in my carry-on. Just because. They can pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

When I came back from Hong Kong to NYC, they squished one of my precious Kee Wah pastries! I asked nicely yet seriously to the TSA guard, "Madam, please don't squeeze those pastries. They're meant to be gifts." She replied back saying they're checking for any pork products but obviously, she squished nothing but lotus seed paste and flaky, pink crust that's sealed in individual, clear plastic wrapping.

I remember in 2001, when the city was going through a bit of a recession the DOH ramped up violations to the ridiculous levels. This smacks of the same, coffer-filling behavior. Thank you Serious Eats for posting about this, getting the word out and the public angry will help to hold these fine-directed violations in check!!

TSA's Traveling with Food Tips

From what I can tell, if the food item is for immediate consumption, they tend to let it through. If it's a sealed container, then it's trashed. Not a whole lot of logic, but I got through security just fine with a large bento that included at least a cup of soupy Thai curry over rice, and they didn't even double-check that. I'm just packing all of my alcohol and other liquids into my suitcase really well - so far I've been across the country a couple of times with beer (to share with friends, then to bring back local tastiness) with no incidents of broken glass. Definitely use glass or plastic over aluminum cans - they puncture and burst too easily.

They dumped my unopened giant container of Fage 0% yogurt and I seriously went into the bathroom and almost cried. If it had been a giant container of nutella, I'm pretty sure that there would have been tears, cuss words, and certainly an arrest.

From Slice

I've heard that a number of new DOH inspectors have been added in the last few weeks, and that they were all sent out on their own this week. They're on the war path, and because they are fresh out of DOH school they are nitpicking every little detail so that they look good for their new bosses. Ugh...fellow restaurateurs.....be afraid, be very afraid....

From Serious Eats

...that is an abomination. if that were me, i would just skip my flight and sit in my hotel room and eat all 53 ounces of that chocolatey goodness in silence.

they can take away my pride, and maybe my dignity, but hecks naw on the nutella.

What BS! I don't think I've ever gotten sick/food poisoning from a reheat.

Hey wait, is that picture from Bella Napoli on 49th St.? I'm chomping on one their slices right now...

From Slice

Has the NYC Department of Health Delcared War on Reheated Pizza Slices?

This is completely insane. If it wasn't just an error made by a rogue inspector the DOH needs to change those regulations or grant a pizzeria exception ASAP. An NYC without slices is not an NYC I want to live in (OK, that's an exaggeration but just barely).
