Meat Lite: Black Beans and Rice, My Way

Maybe I'm brain dead, but I'm not understanding bringing the beans to a boil after heating the oven to 250. Are you boiling them in the oven?

Should Bagel Shops Charge For Toasting?

I wouldn't be shopping there again. There are plenty of bagel options in this city.

@gingercookie - I have never seen a place put the cream cheese on the side without asking!

Whole Foods CEO Criticizes Health Care, Some Shoppers Boycott

I'm glad the liberals will be boycotting WF, and I hope they really do so that I won't have to deal with them when I shop there. It'll make for a much more pleasant shopping experience.

Cook the Book: 'Almost Meatless'

My grandmother used to make a spaghetti "sauce" that was olive oil, garlic, anchovies, and breadcrumbs. I loved it. I know there's a name for it, but damned if I know it.

Grocery Ninja: Agave Nectar, Not Just for Hippies

According to my bottler of Trader Joe's brand agave it has 60 calories per tablespoon, so 20 calories per teaspoon. Sugar has 16 calories per teaspoon, I believe. I do find that I don't use as much as I would sugar, so that's a bonus.

Baskin-Robbins Turkey Cake

They used to make this back in the 70's and early 80's, too. I was born on Thanksgiving and always celebrated with the family on Thanksgiving, and begged for that damn cake every year. Never got it, just might have to buy it for myself this year.

Cook the Book: 'Simple Fresh Southern'

I have made my great grandmother's carrot and zucchini o-shaped loaf for my in-laws for the past three years. I surround the loaf with and put in the middle tons of roasted broccoli - definitely a crowd pleaser, as it goes fantastic with the turkey and mashed potatoes and all the other classic sides!

Impossible to have just one, so the two would be cornbread dressing and Emmitt Smith's Sweet Potatoe Casserole.

My favorite "side" is the nut bread that my mother used to make for her entire married life. She found the recipe in a newspaper in 1948. It is chock-full of walnuts! Thanks!
