A Poorman's Birthday Steak Dinner

You guys are amazing with your detailed and well thought out instructions!! I'm going to go to the butcher later this week and look for which is the most affordable and go from there. Me and my disgusting little regular pan are going to get this job done.

Spot of Tea: Joe Tea in Bottles

I was absolutely obsessed with Joe Teas when I lived in an area that sells them! They're great for sugar cravings (but maybe not for thirst quenching).
I'm not usually a fan of sugary drinks, but these are pretty decent.

Give me your BEST onion showcasing/onion using recipes

These are perfect! I'm so excited.
Does anyone have any good pasta (or even pasta salad) recipes using onions?

Dinner Tonight: Fragrant Tuna and Chickpea Salad

This recipe was fantastic! I ate it with crackers and it was a nice light (but super-filling) dinner and a great lunch the next day.

Chile Chicken Wings with Creamy Cucumbers

This is a great recipe! The chicken's sauce and the cucumber sauce went great together. Especially wonderful for garlic lovers.

Spice Hunting: Turmeric

Turmeric is an amazing food! As many people have already mentioned, it has countless health benefits.

Bottled up, it also makes an amazing hangover prevention drink.

Cook the Book: Lemon and Goat Cheese Ravioli

Hooray! I've been waiting for a recipe to tell me how to make my own ravioli.

Dinner Tonight: 'Ino's Tuna with Black Olive Pesto Panini

This sounds incredible! Ignorant question: How are capers and caper berries different (besides the latter being larger)?

Dinner Tonight: Quesadillas Stuffed with Greens and Feta

Wow, this is definitely a winner! It was super easy and it was definitely a crowd pleaser. It's sparked my reputation for being a good cook, too.

I used spinach and didn't have to cook the greens anywhere near as long as the recipe suggested, so this recipe turned out to be very fast and very easy as well.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Pasta Mancini Collection

I like eating it with a fork AND a spoon!

Thanksgiving Sans Oven

Wow! This is all really great advice!

I am actually living in Japan, so no turkeys at all. Replacing that with creative ideas about chicken is a good idea, and I love hearing the suggestions of other ex-pats.

I think I'll follow all this advice and keep it simple, do what I can with a chicken, and make it pot luck.

If you have links to any good recipes that you've mentioned, I would love to see them.

Healthy and Delicious: Curried Cauliflower Soup With Honey

I just made this soup tonight. It is SO good!!
It definitely needs the honey; it adds a little something extra.

Chocolates or Other Cute Sweets

Bakerella is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for all the suggestions :)

Any ideas for meals for chemo patient and her family?

As someone who's experienced the other side of this situation, I suggest pineapple. It's easy on the stomach and it tastes good and it keeps away mouth sores (if their particular treatment includes those).

That's not exactly a meal, but seeing as it might be hard for your friend to eat much of anything, that's a little something that might be extra-appreciated on top of your kindness.

A Damn Good Duck in Chicago at BBQ King House

I want to hear about peking duck in New York, too!

I grew up eating at the Peking Duck House in Chinatown since I was a baby, before it went upscale and nice. But their duck has never changed and is incredible.

IF YOU COULD BE KNOWN FOR ONE RECIPE WHAT WOULD IT BE???

My chicken with roasted red peppers. So many good memories and happy mouths! Buttery and flavorful too.

What Are Your Best Vending Machine Memories?

So many great vending machine memories!

In Japan in the winter, freezing my butt off getting home one night and stopping for a hot can of creamy hot cocoa... Taking a detour on my bike in the mornings to get the cheapest can of coffee.

Once, I had way too much wine with a friend the night before I had to give a speech in front of about 100 people and woke up with a huge hangover. Desperate for a cure, I managed to drag myself outside after a few hours thinking, "Gatorade, gatorade...." I found Pocari Sweat instead, and we've been pals ever since.

What's the Worst Burn You've Endured While Cooking?

When I was 11 and taking home-ec., my class was baking and when it was time to take a pan out of the oven, I covered one hand with a mitt and grabbed the pan with the other. Oops.

This isn't really a cooking burn, per say, but as a teenager working in a bakery/"gourmet food store," I rested my forearm on the hotplate of a coffee maker. Finally, years later, the scar has faded, but for a very long time, I had a scar that looked like a snap pea.

What's the Worst Burn You've Endured While Eating?

When I was in Thailand, I was dumb enough to think that a strip of red on my plate was a red pepper. In the ensuing minutes, I was pretty sure I was going to die a horrible death from the inside out.

French in a Flash: White Bean Bisque with Garlic Chips

I just made this soup and it's delicious! I didn't use canned beans, though; I cooked my own.

I made a few adjustments here and there (MOAR GARLIC!), but I will definitely make this recipe again in the near future.

Home for the Holidays: What's Your Must-Visit Hometown Haunt?

When I go to my parents' house I HAVE to go to the 24/7 deli for a sandwich. Bacon, munster cheese, chicken, and russian dressing... the heart-attack special! They're so delicious and comforting and remind me of going there at 3 a.m. as a teenager.

Another "home" is Northampton MA, which has all kinds of great food, but I always have to make the rounds and visit all my favorite coffee spots.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Russ & Daughters Brunch Package

An omelet with leftover veggies and gruyere cheese :)

In Season: Persimmons

I love the way persimmons look growing the fall.
Unfortunately, it might take me a while before I try a persimmon again-- I was forced to eat them cut up and DRENCHED in mayonnaise over and over! (shudder)

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: La Quercia

With cantaloupe! Delicious..

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Russ & Daughters Brunch Package

I love all brunch foods, but bagels and lox are by far the winner in my book. I was raised on weekend bagel brunches!

A Poorman's Birthday Steak Dinner

It's my boyfriend's birthday next week, and all he wants is a steak dinner at home, but he thinks he can't have one.
It does, indeed, seem pretty impossible. We're pretty poor, don't have a grill or an oven, and I have never cooked a steak before.

Is there a way to cook pan steak that's foolproof? I don't have an iron skillet. I have a nonstick and a regular pan, a toaster oven, and that's it!! No meat thermometer, no nothing.

If there's hope, please let me know.

Give me your BEST onion showcasing/onion using recipes

I went on a trip last weekend to Awaji Island in Japan and picked up a sack of Awaji onions, which are well-known for being quite tasty, for the equivalent of $1.

Then I brought them home and realized I am only one person! What do I do to make the most of all these onions before they go bad? Give me your best recipes.

I did make a great salad with cabbage, Japanese radish, and thinly-sliced onions already.

Thanksgiving Sans Oven

This is my first year cooking Thanksgiving for friends, and it happens to be in a foreign country in an apartment with NO oven and no access to another home with an oven.

Any links to good recipes that don't require an oven? All I've got is two burners and a toaster oven with no degrees control. I need to get a little creative.

Chocolates or Other Cute Sweets

I want to make some chocolates for Valentine's Day and I'm looking for a good recipe!

Ideally, it would be chic and interesting but simple; however, I'm up for a challenge too!

If you don't have a recipe on hand, do you know of any blogs that relate specifically to making sweets?

Avocados with Soy Sauce Recipe?

While abroad in Japan, I once had a discussion on avocados after I had made guacamole and was told by a woman that her favorite thing was to cook up avocados and eat them with soy sauce.

This sounds like the best idea ever, but I'm not sure what "cook" means in this case. Fried? Is this a common thing to do with avocados? If so, I would love a recipe. If not, any best guesses?
