Re: AG Kawamura. The Secretary talks the talk but his policies and deads are directly opposed and actually harmful to what Slow Food Nation stands for. To have him on this panel is more than ironic once you consider his current pesticide program for the Light Brown Apple Moth -just to give an example:
A.G. Kawamura claims to support organic farming, yet his LBAM eradication program forces growers to use pesticides. The program imposes immensely destructive and unnecessary quarantines, bureacratic roadblocks which are particularly harmful to smaller operators and those engaged in sustainable practices.
Kawamura insists that aerial spraying for LBAM in the Monterey Bay Area in the fall of 2007 was safe, in spite of the fact that hundreds of people reported illnessses, thousands of seabirds died, countless household pets were sickened, and bees disappeared.
A.G. Kawamura declared the LBAM an emergency, forcing a toxic eradication campaign on the people and environment of California with no environmental review.
