Good take-out food near van Cortland Park (Bronx)

If you're going to be near 242nd and Broadway- by the huge field- there are some options- though they might be a stop or 2 on the 1 train, or a 10-15 min walk. Also not sure what type of food you're looking for but here are some options. Cold Cut City on 231st and Godwin Terrace- a block west of Broadway- makes some serious sandwiches/heroes and has a variety of fresh prepared salads.

Another great option is Malecon on Bway just north of 231st St.- their rotisserie chicken is some of the best in the city. A couple of those for a group of people would do the job. Throw in some white rice, beans, and pastelitos. Finish it off with a fresh S&S cheesecake on 238th St. That's a party I'd want to be at.

I wouldn't recommend any of the spots by 242nd and Bway under the subway for takeout.

Great Burger from Waterfront Ale House in New York City

Enjoyed it. Made a mistake with the venison burger- way too dry- more a function of the meat than the kitchen. Had a great berkshire pork sausage appetizer- both were specials. Tilapia po'boy was on point too. This was close to a year ago but it's good to hear they're still doing their thing. See pics and read more HERE.

First Look at the New Yankee Stadium Food

Good stuff. I've been to 2 games and had my fair share of food. Overall not impressed, but wasn't expecting much. The Billy Barou nachos were tops on my list followed by Lobels, and the chicken noodle bowl was decent. Still prefer grabbing a quality boars head sandwich from the Banana Deli on 161st St. for $5 and bringing it in. Thankfully we're still able to bring food in. Check out my rundown with a lot pics HERE.

Dear AHT: What's the Story Behind Jumbo and Jimbo's Burger Chains in New York City?

I've been there a couple of times- I remember hitting the one on Amsterdam off 125th and a newer one that opened on the corner of 207th and 10th Ave. Burgers are decent- but flat and wide. And yes, they steam them under the bowl- from what I remember. Beats a fast food burger.

I know they've been a Harlem institution for years. I'll speak to some folks to see if they have any further insight. I think Jim preceded Jum.

Liebman's is like eating rubber, Cold cut City is a mediocre at best, Garden Gourmet is a decent option.

JGelfand: For that location, howfresheats has pegged the options well; the area around the 231st St. station offers the best and most convenient nearby options. (Liebman's Kosher Delicatessen, at 552 W. 235th, will take you off the main drag, but it's not out of reach.) I agree with howfresheats about the hardscrabble 242nd St.-area businesses, which aren't well-suited for supplying a picnic.

First Look at the New Yankee Stadium Food

I recently did 1st visit to pro baseball last month to new Yankee Stadium. Carl's philly steak w/ cheezwhiz was fantastic, luckily took advice that I would not have room for fries. I've spent $20 on far worse than one of them babies and a beer in my time. If any AA members are reading, screw the meetings "Hi, I'm Adam, I'm an alcoholic, and my wife Eve is addicted to apples." (or something like that) At $9 a beer, recovery comes quickly. I wasn't even driving, legally could have though. Dinner at Hard Rock next time, not just a t-shirt and a draft...

I only tried the garlic fries on my first visit, but they were the best I've had. More well done than at Safeco Field and the Ballpark Formerly Known As PacBell. It's a good thing I didn't eat more. I might not have been able to keep it down after the Indians scored 14 runs in the second inning. I'm heading back this Saturday and plan to get some BBQ. I was gonna check out the Cuban sandwich too. Thanks for the heads up, Erin. I hope I have some room when I get to the stadium. I'm making my inaugaral visit to the Red Hook trucks on their 2009 opening day.

Ciao,

Great Burger from Waterfront Ale House in New York City

Waterfront has always been my favorite watering hole, for their fine selection of seasonal taps. Their burgers are usually pretty good and hearty. Sometimes their special burgers like the bison or "Korean BBQ" burger are worth checking out for a change of pace. I'm a fan of their smoked chicken BBQ, with a pint of Victory HopDevil. Mmm mmm. This reminds me that it's time to head over there for a new review...

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

The Waterfront Ale House on Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, was a favorite of mine when I lived in the area. It's good to know that they have a place in Manhattan.

Dear AHT: What's the Story Behind Jumbo and Jimbo's Burger Chains in New York City?

Uptown burgers are really awful. This 'steaming while grilling' many of these places do overcooks the gristly meat into grey, ghastly shoe leather. Please, please, someone put out a good uptown burger. And no, Piper's Kilt and Coogans, while serviceable and not horrible, totally do not. They are, though, miles better than these steamed horsemeat Jimbo/Jumbo burgers.

Carnegie John's burgers kick all those places butts and he does it from a stand on the side of the road, so there's no excuse for all the bad uptown burgers. I'm talking to you, too, Hudson View.

As far as the names, I have no real idea, but I suspect it's similar the 'Kennedy/Kenney/JFK Fried Chicken' places and now the new 'Trader John's' in Union Square. One guy ripping off another once the name gets well known.
