Dairy-Free, Tomato-Free, and Nearly Carb-Free Pizza.

It's not really a challenge if you are asking others for ideas. Agreed with the rest--make something fabulous. But it's not going to be pizza.

General Info on Thai Cuisine

Or, there is the internet. Although, why would you even write on this topic if you have no, or cursory knowledge of the subject? And frankly, you will never know a culture by its food unless you are in the country experiencing it. Going to a Thai restaurant doesn't cut it. Talk to the cook and/or owner, and not only will there be a language break, he/she will also tell you what they think you want to hear. Why do I know? I'm Asian. I live in the US, but travel a lot.

@Saucy J--yum, thank you! Exactly--I don't want to buy can sauces.

@Saucy Johnny--I'd love to get your enchilada sauce--I need a good recipe and who better to ask?

Cheap Buzz: The Olive Garden

@plaz--chill--no one claimed it was quality food. It's just an option, you know, like McDonald's. Or maybe you never ate fast food and probably don't own a television.

Too Late?

If you have previous experience in the industry, it would be better to get a job and work your way up. You won't have to worry about tuition and you'll have real life experience. Chefs I know couldn't care less about school. They want to know you can cook.

Missing Ingredient -- Water?

Because Vietnamese cinnamon is not the same thing. Like Thai basil is not the same as sweet basil. This post seems a bit like fishing for attention.

Places I Should Eat While in Austin?

@Kitchenista, THAT's a rather sweeping statement for someone who doesn't get to Austin much. Have you been in the last 10 years? Oh, and I used to work at the Mag(nolia's.) While it is an Austin institution, it in no way represents all that's available.

@MandyEats

Blunt is okay as long as you stay on topic with the OP. Sounds like you have some food issues as well ;-)

@mk261274
whyuseafork is right. As I was reading your original post, I couldn't help but think that food is the least of your problems. Is he stubborn and demanding in other aspects? Is he a lot older than you? His behaviour seems terribly controlling and manipulative.

I think it's nice that the other posters are really trying to help you find a solution, but I'm pretty sure most of them are thinking as I do, that this is not a good situation.

Poll: Do You Clean Your Plate?

jimmi--worked in food during college. Chefs work so damn hard, I never understood why until I started to learn to cook and now do it for stress relief. But, from an ex-waitron to a chef, I always appreciated what you guys did and tipped out appropriately.

Poll: Do You Clean Your Plate?

Oh no--cleaning the plate--I'd heard that as a child. Not about African children starving, mostly because we were in Africa. As a result, I developed eating disorders. Now, I eat what I want and put the rest away for another time.

I'm a grazer. I cannot finish a meal so it's always a guarantee that I'll for to-go.

The simple thing Mom never made

bearsonawire--was your mom Southern or Asian? My mom couldn't stand cheese but sure did enjoy the pigsfeet!

The simple thing Mom never made

@machllebelle--right? The food always smelled! I still have to watch today what I bring for lunch at work because everything I love offends someone. Garlic, Maggi, Nuoc Mam, Sriracha, green onions. I'm reduced to bringing lean cuisines because even my salads have onions. PERSECUTION! I still have not had green bean casserole, anything with sweet potatoes, had hotdogs but I'm not a fan. I think the most disgusting thing moms feed the kids are Lunchables.

The simple thing Mom never made

@mongoose--I moved a lot and went to many different ethnic schools. My mother learned to cook American food for my dad, but it was all southern meat and potatoes. To this day, I'm still discovering American food and I've been here for 20 years. And my husband is learning to eat American food in my bastardized versions. I can say I never got grilled cheese, PB&J, macaroni and cheese, etc. But it's all good--discovering Cheetos, for example :-)

The simple thing Mom never made

@dbcurrie--I didn't think you meant it in a bad way. It's just that when I thought about it, I neither grew up in the US or have an American mom, so I have no idea what I might have missed out on. Pretty much everything people are mentioning, I didn't get as a kid. However, being half Asian, we ate a lot of rice. My dad, American, insisted on having it with butter and sugar. The idea was absolutely horrifying!
