Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I can drink a gallon of milk in one sitting I bet with no problem, eat an entire cheese-covered pizza, but any desserts with a ton of butter or cream cheese give me heartburn. What's up with that?
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
I thought this was true for anything with char?
No matter, burnt toast is still my favorite hangover cure: the bread to soak up the acid and the carbon to settle your stomach.

Ditto: that beef is so tantalizing it may as well be porn. I'm currently imagining what it would feel like to sink my teeth into it...

Serious Cocktails: What's New (and Old) in American Whiskey
Anyone else but me will find this completely laughable, but I'm partial to Rebel Yell. We don't have it in Ohio: have to trek to the Party Source in Kentucky. But sweet and tasty. And cheap. Very, very cheap.

Mixed Review: Jell-O No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake
I must say, this is one of the few "dish in a box" things that I love. So sweet, so tasty, so Midwestern. This and Hamburger Helper beef stroganoff might make the most perfect boxed meal.
What's Your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor
Soundd maybe he (like I) doesn't really care for chunks of anything in ice cream. I also despise "clever" flavors. I am never impressed. "Oooh, this ice cream tastes just like cucumber!" Like seriously, if I wanted a cucumber, I'd eat a cucumber. (I'm the one Columbusite who isn't gaga for Jeni's)
I don't think liking chocolate and vanilla only is limiting. It can be quite fun trying everyone's take on those awesome flavors.
How to Introduce Craft Beers to New Beer Drinkers
Why again are we supposed to be forcing other people to embrace what we do? Is it just because we're Americans?
I love myself a hoppy ale, but there is nothing really wrong with not liking it. I suppose this is useful if someone you know is interested in expanding their beer tastes, but the "How pedestrian are your tastes? What is wrong with you?" attitude irks me.
/tries brushing chip off shoulder.
McCafe: McDonald's New Fancier, Pricier Coffee
Tried Dunkin Donuts for the first time while visiting Boston last year and I HATE that they want to mix everything for you. I want to add the cream to make the perfect color.
I did try the McDonald's plain coffee last weekend and thought it was ok. Though over the last year I've gone from buying local hand roasted beans to developing an affinity for Chock Full O Nuts. I don't trust my tastes any more.
Served: Restaurant Job Search
A bit of unsolicited advice: do not go to graduate school without doing a cost-benefit analysis. Will the money you spend and sacrifice by going to graduate school be returned to you, either in future earnings or even intangible benefits? Graduate school is an investment in yourself - and not all investments are good ones. Too many people blindly go to graduate school.
Times are tough everywhere. I love my job, but I make less money now than I have since I graduated college...now with $25K of student loans.
In Defense of Breakfast: A Morning Manifesto
I HAVE to eat breakfast: I am hungry almost immediately upon waking. However, I'm not a morning person so it normally doesn't matter what I eat. Because of that I try to eat something healthy: oatmeal, this morning with a cut up apple, brown sugar & cinnamon, walnuts and golden raisins. I may end up eating junk for every other meal of the day, but at least breakfast was good for me. Oh yea, and a quart of water to go with all that fiber.
Photo of the Day: Rabbits Eating Lettuce
Ok, this post made me finally stop lurking. My rabbit Fiver will eat anything. It started with my sheet music and junk mail. Then he started eating the cats' food (bunnies are supposed to be vegan...). My boyfriend brings me flowers every Shabbat and Fiver started eating those. Last week he tried candy corn for the first time and has since found the bag and tried to chew through it. He also will eat popcorn and saltine crackers. And he KNOWS when my roommate (an actual vegan) or I am eating and begs. Like up on hind legs begs. Rabbits are funny.

Serious Cocktails: What's New (and Old) in American Whiskey
Denver-based Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey. Would be Bourbon but for the lack of corn - they use barley instead. Tasty. Also, the High West Rendezvous Rye mentioned makes a very nice Sazerac - extra spicy.
Serious Cocktails: What's New (and Old) in American Whiskey
We have a bottle of Booker's (still in its wooden box) that we're saving for when the weather gets a little colder, but usually Knob Creek is my go-to for the winter months.

Can't seem to put down the Black Maple Hill Bourbon. Soooo delicious.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I really enjoy a rich crumb cake and anything with that much butter has got to be good. Then with the sour cream GIVE ME A FORK a gallon of whole milk and get out of my way!
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I'm sure this is incredible, and as a former "Butterton" family member, I would love to make it. However, I have great success with Martha Stewart's New York Style Crumb cake.....absolutely delicious! And might be a great alternative for those who want to curtail a little of the butter.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
NY style crumb cake is 2 - 3 parts crumbs to 1 part cake, so if you're freaking about the butter, halve the crumb recipe for regular crumb cake.
Or better yet, use only half; freeze the rest airtight and have uber-fast crumb cake next time.
Also, regarding flat topping: I'm surprised that "domestic goddess" Martha apparently doesn't know the secrets to great crumb topping:
1. using fingertips, push clumps of topping together to form large crumbs (large peas to kidney bean sized).
2. make the crumbs BEFORE the batter and refrigerate or freeze until ready to place evenly on the batter.
3. You need to place the larger crumbs so the entire top is covered and you don't break the clumps you invested your time in making.
The chilled clumps retain their shape during baking so the cake is be-yoo-tiful and the big crumbs provide a great texture treat.
If I'm serving this for a plate & fork situation, I like to incorporate a thin layer of perfectly ripe sliced summer fruit in the batter. (In the cake, not between the cake & crumbs: that makes the sugar dissolve and the cake soggy.) Can make the cake too tender to eat out of hand.
Hope this is helpful to someone.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
Hey, I agree with Paula Deen of the Food Network "you can never have too much butter" -- seems like something Julia Childs would also say!
I'm going to eat this and enjoy the rich, buttery taste with each bite. As for serving 32 people -- I'm not sure I will share this one.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I've made this before but it's not my favorite. I have been on a quest for the perfect crumb cake and the best so far was by Carole Walter from GREAT COFFEE CAKES, STICKY BUNS, MUFFINS & MORE. It's yummy although best eaten the first day. I still make new crumb cake recipes whenever I can find a good one, just in case it's "the one".
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
Speaking of honey cakes.....I recd., what I thought, was an authentic honey cake recipe from a friend. I, in turn, shared it with another friend and when she made it it turned out badly. Now I'm afraid to try it. Does anyone have an "authentic" honey cake recipe they will share?

Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
this is my favorite cake in the whole world, but i use cake flour, and it makes everything so light you won't even notice all that butter going down!
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
it's probably not heartburn hellojodi, it's most likely your gallbladder revolting.
I also agree that there's a LOT of butter in there.........however, in ratio to the amount of flour, it's not totally outrageous. Really good pate brisee uses 2 sticks/2-1/2c.flour and, the recipe does make a lot as well. Still, I'd follow directions & only make for a crowd............the temptation would be w-e-i-g-h to much for me!
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
This sucks. I love a lot of things burned and well done....
damn.
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
I was shocked to discover that I can actually make toast without any burnt, black or charred parts. That said... it's just as well that I don't drink alcohol anymore as burnt toast has long been a suggested antidote for hangovers.

Miriam Nestle is about to join the current administration. I can assure you that toast is not the only thing she will be banning.

You can always scrape off the black parts. My grandma taught me that!

whatever, i could care less. one more thing, right?
i do recall one of my favorite calvin & hobbes strips tho:
"hey hobbes-look, it's magic! you put bread in....and TOAST comes out!"
"where did the bread go?"
"i don't know-amazing, right?"
(something like that....oh bill waterson, why did you have to retire?)
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
Wow, bread and acrylamide. I do biochemical research and use acrylamide on a semi-regular basis. It's fairly carcinogenic when not in solution and especially when it's airborne (we all wear masks whenever we're using it) I'm going to have to make sure to not burn my toast from now on!
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
@arm - will you have toasted poundcake????
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
Swallowing cigarettes is okay, it's smoking them that gives you cancer.
Does Burnt Toast Cause Cancer? Maybe
@egghunt. Unfortunately, it isnt an "additive". The acrylamide forms as part of the chemical reaction when bread gets toasted. So its pretty unavoidable if you're going to toast your bread. Granted, burning it to a crisp certainly is worse than a light browning. And if Pavlov is correct (and i think he is) nearly all breads with a crust will have the same problem.
I have toast about once or twice a week. I think I'll be ok.

I had a customer the other day that didn't want her steak grilled due to carcinogens caused by char-grilling foods.

Mixed Review: Jell-O No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake
I love this feature. I hardly ever use mixes, but I always wonder about them and this totally satisfies my curiosity.
I'd love to see some reviews of falafel mix or those various boxed potato dishes. The former I'd actually buy if it was good; the latter just fascinate me.
