Where Would You Go for Your Ultimate 'Two Hour Vacation'?

With 2 hours to kill I would go to Doyle's in Watson's Bay (Sydney) on a lazy Sunday afternoon for fish & Chips (which I generally don't like) and beer (which I generally like).

Amazing views of the Bay and all the girls look like Elle MacPherson.

I had the CFS at Mickey Mantle's a few years back and it was pretty good. I remember The Mick raving about it when the place first opened and eventually tried it. Good, but I've had better in Texas - most recently Booger Reds in Ft. Worth.

Thanks again Ed and also for printing this cheat sheet.

I printed it and will take it with me.

Blue Smoke in NYC

County Line in San Antonio and Rendezvous in Memphis (touristy I know, but the ribs were good and had a fun time). Lots of others really.

Eclectic: ABSOLUTELY El Bulli, for an out-of-this-different-world experience.
Picturesque: Any Taverna in the Greek Islands, overlooking the Aegean.
Fancy: Del Posto NY) or Chez Panisse(CA) or Vetri (PA)
Sexy: Buddakan
Sweet: Chez Angelina Paris...Hot Chocolate
Homey: The Pantry, downtown L.A. (Huge breakfast! Potatoes!)
Fishy: Joe's Stone Crab, Miami
To the Point: Pink's in L.A., although Great Burger (PA)is giving them a run with the Jersey style ripper dogs smothered in chili.

Oh, I guess I just like to eat!

The brisket and the sausage at Southside just blew me away. The sausage was the best ever! Those were the standouts for me.

I enjoyed Mitchell's whole hog sandwich...it was very different. Unfortunately, I didn't get any of the extra skin or the ribs that some people were given. :-(

I am from the NY Metro area and have never had such good 'cue!

Just about the list we hit, no 17th though and did the ribs next to bob Gibson.

Mitchell's was predictably awesome but my personal fav was the Gibson pork shoulder, wow what a sandwich. Surprise of the day was getting our beef fix at Southside instead of Salt Lick (line was really long at SL even with the pass)... their sausage was excellent and the overall plate was the best value for dollar at the event. Just a huge plate of food (comparatively)

... and the James "Blood" set was a perfect end to the day Sat.

We actually walked through after having brunch at Blue Smoke for my son's birthday. Too full to eat except I had to get a sandwich at Mitchell's when I saw no line at his stand at 1:15 (I was shocked). Too bad his place in NC is closed. I've been craving this sandwich for a year. Did not disappoint.

Got to talk to him for a few minutes. Nice guy.

I live less than 30 minutes away from Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur and it always thrills me to hear how much people love it around the country!

We hit the first 3 of your recommendations today. Bob Gibsons -- heaven. 17th Street -- eh, not so fab, small portion for the price, and a long not worth it wait. Southside? I'm going back tomorrow for more -- the best brisket and the best sausage ever. I'm glad we hit this one first because I didn't want to share and made the Husband get his own. Man that was heaven.

Thanks for the recs. It was a really fun day.

Thanks for the 411. It's going to be my first time there. If you see a chick in a wheelchair with insanely large sunglasses on -- that'd be me -- do say hello.

Blue Ribbon in Arlington, MA if I'm anywhere north of Tennessee. Otherwise, I just can't pick.

But I LOVED both Kreuz Market and the Salt Lick. Mmmmm

NY State: Big W's, Pawling, NY
NYC: RUB (Daisy May's loses only b/c of their irritating TV ads)

I grew up in North Carolina and by far my favorite was Troutman's Barbecue in Denton, NC for the perfect chopped plate. When I moved to Huntsville, AL, I became a Big Bob Gibson's fan - but it's apples and oranges as far as styles go.

definitely RUB on 23rd street...just the smell of that place makes my mouth water.

I love Ubon's in Yazoo City, MS. They smoke everything beautifully and my mouth is watering just thinking about the food and hospitality they serve up. You cant go wrong with them!

Ubon's also knows exactly how to make PERFECT fried catfish!

In NYC I just cant seem to get myself away from Virgil's...

Daisy May's BBQ is the best I've found in NYC. Although the pulled pork was delicious, the highly questionable political views disseminated at Maurice's BBQ in Columbia, SC didn't go down as easily.

i love the selection of bbq at Blue Smoke....as well as the strong cocktails that allow so much more food to go down. YUM!

As a barbecue aficionado, some of the best ribs that I've ever tasted can be found at Uncle Pete's in Boston. It takes Pete two - three days to prepare a rack of ribs. This a guy that is obsessed with ribs, and the taste reflects his devotion - the best I've had!

Hand down RUB in New York City. For a kind of fancy chain experince Houston's is the way to go.

Gonna have to pick Payne's, in Memphis, TN for this one. The Rendez-Vous is too huge and impersonal, and while I love Neely's in a pinch, Payne's reigns supreme for me in Bluff City. Their pulled pork sandwich (about $3.50) hand-chopped to order by a grandmother who has clearly worked there forever is just about the tastiest thing you can eat in Memphis. The location--the space used to be a gas station and garage--and lack of utensils (save sporks) just adds to the draw of Payne's smoky, moist meat with just a hint of sweetness. Sigh.

PS: Be warned, as the sandwiches do come with cole slaw on top, and that's not to everyone's liking.

My mom is from northern Alabama, where I spend many summers with my grandparents. They lived very close to to Big Bob's in Decatur, but I'll always claim that nearby Whitt's pulled pork with vinegar sauce and slaw is the best. Very similar in style to what Chris Lilly does, but it's missing one crucial element: childhood memories.

Barbecue is one of those foods that sometimes requires such memories. Like mom's pies or grandma's biscuits, there may be better tasting food out there, but we're always fondest of the food we have the fondest memories of eating.
