Snapshots from Italy: Artisan Gelato at Bologna's Cremeria Funivia
this is a strange coincidence: i'm spending the semester studying in bologna and i just tried cremeria funivia for the first time yesterday! i agree that it is delicious gelato, and the flavors are quite creative. I had the amarenata and the tortino funivia, which created an intensely flavorful combination of nutty chocolate and tart cherry - pretty perfect. and the fact that you can eat your gelato in piazza cavour is a huge bonus. however: the best gelato in bologna is, to me, gelatauro on via san vitale. their gelato is transcendental, as are their pastries and their espresso drinks and pretty much everything else that comes out of that magical kitchen. gelatauro is closed on mondays, so that's a good day to take advantage of the other gelato places in bologna, like this one. Castiglione is pretty good, too, but don't waste your time with Gianni. Buon appetito!

My mom because she taught me about good food as a way of life, Julia Child because she was amazing and 6'2, and Nigella Lawson because she makes cooking fantastically sexy.
If you could have any chef cook you dinner, who would it be?
Julia Child, no question.
where to eat out in boston?
Please do yourself a favor and go to the Flour Bakery and Cafe. And explore the North End for amazing Italian.

it's better than castiglione, gelatauro (which isn't all it's hyped up to be, imo) and gianni by far. the pistacchio was actually really good, the strawberry was amaaazing and full of real fruit pieces and such rich flavor, and my favorite flavor was tortina di funavia, which was basically a coldstone-ish mix of chocolate gelato with pieces of chocolate cake (hence, tortino). AMAZING, you have to get that as at least one of your flavors! plus fun fact: they put liquid-y chocolate in the bottom of your cestino/cup if you get the "alice" flavor (mascarpone and something else). i live about 2 minutes away while i'm abroad for the semester and it's pretty dangerous for my waistline...but so worth it! go sit in the little courtyard in piazza cavour afterward with friends :)

Robyn, it's pretty new... I don't have an exact opening date, but my boyfriend lived in Bologna through December '07 and said it had opened since then. So don't beat yourself up!

I want to try them but I'm afraid. They're so expensive and what if they're not good.
Serious Sandwiches: The Waffle Sandwich
What!? This is so right/wrong -- I love it. Kudos to this sandy innovator. And you are 100% correct. A patty melt is a sandwich; a waffle sandwich is a sandwich; a burger is something else.
By the way, as much as I enjoy sandwiches, waffles are best enjoyed in taco form. Toast some eggos, add syrup and fold. They go well with other "w" foods, such as white wine.
