Burger Joint in the Parker Meridan is my favorite burger spot. But my favorite burger is the one I make. 80/20 blend, salt & pepper, griddled until medium rare, served with sweet hot chipotle onions, bacon and guacamole.

Hot Dog Of The Week: Philly Combo

I used to love the Levis' combo dog of a fish cake and hot dog. The fish cake was a white fish flaked into mashed potatoes and fried to perfection. The combination of flavors with the deli mustard on a steamed bun was heaven. One of my childhood favorites that ended with the shop closing in '92.

There are a several fond memories but I'll stick with the summer months:

1) My father would take my brother and I from our hamlet in Cynwyd to West Philly for Maroni's Water Ice. It brings back such great nights with the line at the small walk up shop for our favorite flavors, usually a Lemon and Cherry mix with the Cherry on top so it would melt into the lemon. My Dad would get quarts to take home (they later made great soup and sauce containers to freeze leftovers). I miss those summer days with sweet water ice.

2) Walking on the boardwalk in Ocean City and getting hot Johnson's caramel corn. The salty sweetness of it was to die for.

3) White house subs

Cook the Book: 'Serious Barbecue' by Adam Perry Lang

My biggest BBQ disaster was my first attempt to smoke a pork shoulder. I had the timing all wrong and my smoker's heat was erratic. That problem created these large smoke storms that would blow the smoke into the house through our very crappy windows. After 12 hours of "smoking" the shoulder had a nice bark on it but was still raw in the center. Meanwhile the house smelled like a BBQ pit for at least 2 months. Never again was what my wife said and she was right. I've stuck to smoking chicken, ribs and brisket.

On my biggest success the smoked chicken breasts I made yesterday came out perfect. Putting them in a brine overnight helped ensure that the meat was moist and juicy.

I prefer the BBQ that my family members cook the best, but I am open to trying recommended BBQ restaurants, too.

There was a little hole in the wall bbq in Fort Myers, Florida which we visited every spring when I was young. Nobody has ever even come close to their bbq magic.

I went to a restaurant called Famous Daves here in Minnesota. They have good bbq and you can buy their sauces in the supermarket, which I do all the time.

I was at a company plant in Thomasville, GA years ago, and we had a working lunch planned because we had so much to do. The folks at the plant brought in barbeque so good that we didn't get any work done over lunch, we just talked food.
