Ultra-Crispy Slow-Roasted Pork Shoulder
Do you think the cooking time would be substantially shorter for a half butt? I've never tried cooking butt 'cause there's only two of us, but just today at my local Key Foods saw them selling half butts.
Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides: Erin's Boerum/Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens
Really should've mentioned G. Esposito & Sons pork store. They specialize in pork, but are a full butcher. They also make great, and huge, sandwiches, prosciutto balls (which are fried rice balls with cheese and bits of prosciutto in them) and a KILLER house-made sopressatto.
Philadelphia: 10 Amazing Hoagies You Should Eat
Paesano's. Best sandwiches in Philly.

Date Night: La Palina
Sounds much like what I found soon after moving to Brooklyn and stumbling upon Marco Polo in Carroll Gardens.

Philadelphia: Fantastic Cheesesteak From Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies
Back when I could still eat like a pig, the first time I tried the Schmitter, I had two double Schmitters. The waitress said she'd never seen anyone do that. Good times.
Philadelphia: Fantastic Cheesesteak From Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies
Kenji, everyone knows you get a cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz, not provolone.
For a better sandwich, get a Schmitter from McNally's Tavern (or at the ballpark, though it's substandard because it's mass-produced there). For the _best_ sandwiches in town, go to Paesano's. Oh. My.
What have you had/want to try at Shopsins?
Nine times out of ten anyone Kenny's rude to had it coming. Plus, his schtick is part of the charm of the place. Also, part of why prices are so high -- he knows he can get away with charging what he wants because people are going to keep coming. That said, a lot of the choices give you heaps of food on your plate. His sliders are really good. I'm fond of the high school hot lunch: turkey sandwich in a bowl along with stuffing and gravy. Some of his soups are inspired; I'd advise you to pick the least likely one and you'll probably really like it. Most of the breakfast dishes are good to great. Patsy's cashew chicken is really tasty too. Get there if you can, whyusesfork. And bring cash, 'cause it's cash only.
Meet & Eat: Lidia Bastianich
A couple years back me, my girlfriend and a couple of friends went to Del Posto for a birthday dinner. My GF made a card with Mario on the front. When we got there, Lidia was hostess. My GF went to her and asked her to sign it. She was graceful and charming and signed. I love her.
A Sandwich a Day: Italian Roast Pork at DiNic's in Philadelpha, PA
They may be good, but Paesano's has the best sandwiches -- including roast pork -- in all of Philadelphia. AND fantastic roasted potatoes.
Street Food: Kelvin Natural Slush Co.
I was intrigued one day when I saw their truck, but in a rush and couldn't try one. Not too long after, my girlfriend saw it when coming home and picked one up for me -- ginger with raspberry puree. It was pretty darned great. I'm all for Slurpees, and would never knock them, and even go out of my way every once in a while to walk to one of the few 7-Elevens here in Manhattan to get one. But Kelvin's stuff is on another level.
The Art of the Lunch Deal: Keen's Steakhouse
Bessfour, give it another try. In the past 10 - 15 years I've had at least one meal a year at Lugar's (a friend always makes us go there for his birthday dinner), and quite a few of them have been meh. In that same period I've gone to Keen's a whole bunch (though not quite as many times) and have never had a bad meal or experience. Though I must say that I had the prime rib as a lunch, in the pub, and wasn't all that impressed. Then again, it was the only time I didn't have the mutton chop.
The 3 Best Hot Fudge Sundaes in New York City
One memorable dinner at Luger's we managed to convince the waiter to bring us extra schlag. he brought out a big metal bowlful! It was heaven.
And I love Keen's with a passion. Their mutton chop is to die for. But for a dessert that, you must try the red berry bibble. It's great.
A Sandwich A Day: 'The Schumwich' from Subway
I prefer Eisenberg's Sandwich #9 (named in honor of Eliot Spitzer). It's hot tongue on rye.
Hot Dog of the Week: Dogmatic Gourmet Sausage System
Not that good, and way too expensive.
A Sandwich a Day: Roaster Beef at Roll-n-Roaster
You can get a semi-decent ripoff at This Little Piggy in the E.Vill.
New Jersey Dispatch: Charlie's Pool Room
That is what they call a "mealie." It's a chili-like sauce, supposedly Hungarian in origin, and their mom's recipe. Then, diced onions (done by hand with a knife, not a contraption) and peppers. There's not many local customers because it's become a food tourist spot, and though they have Bible verses on the walls and tracts lying around, they don't preach at you at all.
Rhode Island Showdown: Coffee Milk Taste Test
Seconding BobInVa, here. Coffee Time is great stuff. Anyone in NYC wanting to try it, you can find it at the Food Emporium near Union Square. And save yourself from being ripped off paying the outrageous price Momofuku Milk Bar charges for coffee milk.
New Jersey Dispatch: Charlie's Pool Room
Charlie's served me the best hot dog I've ever had. There's no place quite like it.
Hot Dog of the Week: Charlie's Pool Room
No, Schiff's is a meat store and supermarket in Scranton.
And that's the impostor. I stupidly added "Lunch" when the original is just Coney Island. Here's their Web site: http://www.coneyislandofscranton.com/CIOS1/Welcome.html The place is all spiffed up now, after is was gutted by an arson last year. So glad they stuck with it and reopened.
Hot Dog of the Week: Charlie's Pool Room
John, you need to get yourself to Scranton to try Coney Island Lunch (the real one, not the sham imposters on the main drag). They serve a local weiner, Guttheinz. And in some of the supermarkets' deli sections you can find equally good local dogs, like Schiff's and another whose name I forget at the moment.
Hot Dog of the Week: Charlie's Pool Room
The only way I found it was thanks to printed out Mapquest directions, and even then it was tough.
Joe and John are great guys. According to them, they used to be hippies and hardcore gamblers, but they got religion and turned their lives around, eventually taking the place over from their dad, who used to cut hair in the now-vacant barbershop next door.
Clarifying a couple of things. They don't have a computer, but one of the brothers regularly goes to the public library to surf the Net. He is especially good at finding mentions of their place, which he prints and adds to their collection.
Secondly, the dogs are pan fried, but what gives them extra zip is that they are pan-fried in oil. They used to use Crisco, but it got too pricey, so they use cooking oil they buy in bulk.
Their religiosity might be off-putting to some, but they really don't shove it down your throat or preach at you (with the exception of the tracts and Bible verses on the walls). Get over that and you'll have a fine time. My girlfriend and I went there two or three times one summer, then came back late the next summer and were stunned when Joe greeted us by name. He remembered!
Oh, and the mealie is simply the finest dog I've ever had, with Coney Island Lunch in Scranton, PA, a distant second.
Eat for Eight Bucks: Best-Ever Salad for Leftover Meats
Substitute canola for the EVOO and make that vinegar the balsamic type and you have the dressing for Bobby Flay's "Sophie's Chopped Salad," which is a pretty darn great salad too.
A Southern Biscuit and Dinner Roll Taste-Off with Nora Ephron
The Sister Schubert's Web site has not been updated with some really big news: Sam's Club is now carrying her Parker House rolls, in a 30-count package! I checked Sam's Club's site, and it looks like they are in pretty much all their stores. Great news for NYers and NJites who don't hate WalMart.
The Joys of Unnaturally Flavored Sodas
Whole Foods store-brand sodas generally suck, but their black cherry is darn good, and cheaper than Dr. Brown's; plus, it's made with sugar, not corn syrup.
In certain parts of Pennsylvania (though it's getting harder to find), you can get Frozen Run birch beer, which is clear and scrumptious. Fans of Crystal brand birch beer should seek this out, since Crystal went out of business not long ago.
Zummo’s Café in Scranton, Pennsylvania
Amen, Brian! From the abundance of junk food (Tastycakes; various brands of potato chips; Frozen Run birch beer) to all kinds of Italian, Greek and Slavic delicacies. The area can't be beat.
