Autumn Candy
when I was younger, halloween meant endless noshing on whatever candy there was. seriously, stomach aches from eating too many sweets? pshhhh. never. no matter what. is that normal?
My sister and I would dump our goodies on the living room floor and trade for favorites, but after a couple days of keeping them separate they ended up in one huge lump anyways. on that first night though, she got the things with nuts, I got the sours. she got the chocolate bars with stuff (crunch, crackle, etc... except I think my dad stole most of that), my mom got the mr. goodbars (still no idea why she liked them) and I got the creamy chocolate and 3 muskateers! reeses, we both wanted. weird things... neither of us did.
Best way to eat ice cream?
I haven't had ice cream in a while... I got kind of burnt out on it after many years of nightly (and afternoonly, and often mid-morningly) indulging in it.
as a kid, I liked the chocololateiest flavors I could get my hands on... chocolate fudge brownie, chocolate mousse royalle, that kind of thing. extra chocolate, please, wherever you can shove it in :)
In elementary school, if I went out for ice cream, it was always the chocolatiest flavor, whipped cream (no fudge sauce, for some reason), and the little tiny gummi bears. I still see the appeal of those little frozen fruity guys, but I'm not sure if I'd still order it quite that way now.
PeanutButter - in my sophomore year of high school I went through a huge long kick of eating ice cream (coffee and vanilla, one scoop of each) with frozen sliced strawberries and kashi go lean crunch mixed in.
so crunchy. so good. so tooth-breaking.
Pike Place Market in Seattle
I'm a seattleite too, and whenever I happen to find myself downtown, I meander my way towards pike place. Its so friendly and bustling (a little TOO much for me to be an everyday excursion!!) but I love the atmosphere and of course, all the wonderful nibbles. I spent my ex-boyfriend's birthday with him on a walk from the huge new-ish funky library to the market and back in the pouring rain last november and it couldn't have been a more perfect afternoon-evening. talk about stereotypical seattle...
:)
I feel oddly and protectively proud of the market after reading all this praise... haha I'm glad everyone loves it so much!!
Shiritaki Noodles
I'd agree - I don't think they'd make a really great substitution in pasta dishes that depend on that pasta-y taste or texture. They won't easily taste italian, they have their own squishy (or as cassaendra said, rubbery) texture and an un-semolina taste that you'll either love or hate.
I love the texture, but I had to get over how different they were from other noodles. coming up with new recipes that use them, instead of using old pasta recipes with a substitute, would probably have better results.
Cassaendra - I wish I could have your long sukiaki recipe! I'm always looking for new things to do with funky ingredients like shirataki.
Cheese Rap - MUST SEE.
hahahahahaa
ohhhhh good stuff.
I like the blue cheese.
and the parm/romano twins.
Diet Coke & Lime
waaaa-a-a-a-a-ay better than frickin "diet coke LIME." just because it's artificially sweetened doesn't mean they have to artificially lime-itize it!!
I agree though, regular diet coke, with real delicious lime is the best.
I spent a week in yelapa, mexico, in february, and drank it every day - multiple times.
so there's an answer for you - it's spread to Seattle, and all the way down to yelapa.
:)
Seattle Will Charge Shoppers for Disposable Bags Next Year
I live in Seattle too, but I hadn't heard about this yet. I agree, I think it's a step in the right direction. Sure, its a small one compared to the major pollution and deforestation and decimation of the oceans and wildlife that the world as a whole is facing. But, for the amount of people who run to the store everyday and get a few plastic bags to put their already over-packaged food into, just to toss them out and not have another for the next day? This will be a big ol' wakeup call, and a big difference.
@Pointy - I agree that there are big issues out there that need attention, but just because there are big issues, does that mean small changes are worthless or unnecessary? Sometimes baby steps can lead to leaps.
Favorite Mushroom?
I have found my people.
:)
I love mushrooms... no one around here seems to understand it, but I just absolutely adore them. broiled portabellos over spinach, crimini and button raw. perfectttt.
good chocolates?
@sobriquet - I just finished off a Theo dark dark dark Venezuela 91% bar.
mmmm.
I'm in Seattle - somehow I got the idea that theo was just local? but who knows, that might have been a random assumption I made.. it's good good stuff though!!
The versatile tortilla
I'm munching a 12:20am snack of two extra thin toasty corn tortillas, mozzarella cheese, and salty sundried tomatoes at the moment. (yes, I like my sundried tomatoes in their intense little dehydrated state!)
I recently rediscovered tortillas after a long time without... @Ravara - like mexican bread and butter for sure.
:)
Mentos 'Kissfight' Game
I couldn't beat level 3!
psh... the movie date and the cheerleader were easy.
Grocery stores -- the positive side
oh and @sadiepix - I always offer my two cents about interesting foods!! I love it when people ask me questions or don't mind answering mine - its always refreshing to know i'm not the only foodie weirdo in the vicinity!
Grocery stores -- the positive side
I have been friends with the staff at my favorite grocery store since before I got my drivers license - and it's no small store, either.
I'm a regular for late-night run ins for vegetables (especially bulk mushrooms, because I'm an addict) and both the produce guys and the cashiers always smile at me and joke about my vegetabley ways.
They've employed some people I've known since elementary school, many of which I happen to not be too fond of... but hey, aside from those few, I absolutely love their staff.
my favorite (and very knowledgeable) produce stocker sees me coming and stops what he's doing to try and persuade me to buy a 5 pound case of mushrooms... because he knows every so often I'll give in. free fruit and vegetable samples are always, always offered to everybody- and always, always accepted!

Help with a diet
@blackolive -- as someone who has seen a nutritionist for health stuff for a couple of years, I can say that while I DO think it's cool to have my diet analyzed, I have to go into it completely modestly or else its super easy to get defensive!! I never quite want to write on my food log that I got up at 3 in the morning to have a big bowlful of chocolate and nuts washed down with hot cocoa!!
BUT, ssto1946, Madelyn's advice (above) sounds nurturing and healthful, and really all-encompassing. Best of luck overcoming this!
Cookbook conundrum
the best cookbooks are ones that have recipes you can realllly see yourself cooking!
I have an unhealthy obsession with fun cookbooks :]
but although they're fun to look through, I can tell from a quick glance through the pages if its actually realistic that I'll make them.
the Moosewood cookbooks are some of my favorites, especially the "low-fat favorites." I like it because every recipe (and there are a LOT) is a smart and healthy idea, and also because they are easy to shop for and cook.
that's my two bits - have fun! cookbooks are so entertaining!
Need Name for a Soup Company
@Bangie -- I was just thinking "spoons" when I read your "The Spoon"
something simple but fun sounding is easy to remember!
personally, I just like utensil names in general...
if you did decide to go with a play on "soup," how does "soupernatural" strike you?
hahaha this thread is fun to look through.
Eating in Seattle, Vancouver, and in between
Just north of Seattle (and north Seattle itself) has some restaurants that are cheaper than in the heart of the city. They're more often family-owned and not as flashy, but the food is cozy and the people are fun.
If you feel like swinging up into shoreline: Spiro's pizza/pasta, Kam Rai (Thai, owned by a very sweet man who shares my same birthday!), Chef at Wok (North Seattle, realllly good Chinese), and there are others!
let me know if you're interested in a 15 minute drive up north for good food!
Do you eat in bed?
oh I'm so with you and the comfort food in bed people!
I love frozen yogurt, chocolate, a juicy book, and a big mug of cocoa after a long day, after everything else in the house (including the kitchen and my family) are shut down for the night.
me time to the extreme.
:]
Bay scallops, anyone?
thank you! I will keep the dastardly quick cooking time in mind (and hopefully, not experience the arm biting sensation)
Zeeks Pizza: Seattle's Decent Mini-Chain Inspires Deep Pizza Thoughts
I know it's off-topic, but since you mentioned it in the 1st paragraph, I thought I'd say something about the LaRosa's pizza in Cincinnati.
LaRosa's is successful for 2 reasons:
1. There are almost no options for great pizza in the Nati (esp since there isn't much of an Italian population to begin with, mostly German) so there isnt much of a discerning eye for pizza 'round these parts.
2. People here like to back a hometown kid, so LaRosa's gets a big boost from that.
So I guess i'm not defending LaRosa's inasmuch as I'm trying to explain why it is one of the more well-known local exports.
One of the better pizzas in town does, in fact, come from a mini-chain similar to Zeke's in the form of Dewey's Pizza (locations also in St. Louis & Cleveland). It's more of a new school american pizza with gourmet and seasonal ingredients. And from looking at the pizza above, I'd bet that Dewey's rates above that. Next time you're in flyover territory give it a shot.
Zeeks Pizza: Seattle's Decent Mini-Chain Inspires Deep Pizza Thoughts
@Stushi Isn't that a bit of apples and bowling balls? How about Via Tribunali? Have yuo been to any of them? Anyone? Anyone? That one in Belltown with the roll up garage door looks very cool.
Ciao,
Paulie Gee
Zeeks Pizza: Seattle's Decent Mini-Chain Inspires Deep Pizza Thoughts
Definitely try Pagliacci's which is remarkedly consistant and tasty - a nice proportion of sauce to cheese to crust (that latter nicely chewy). I usually get the double pepperoni. I can also recommend an iteration of the local Romio's chain, Greek pizza with a very good chewy baked crust. I like the classic pepperoni and Italian sausage, as well as the eggplant and goat cheese, but a star fave at our house is the GASP: Garlic, Artichoke, Sun-dried tomatoes and Pesto.
I felt that Tutta Bella was a bit over praised. Although tasty, I never found their pies as satisfying as a good NYC slice.
Zeeks Pizza: Seattle's Decent Mini-Chain Inspires Deep Pizza Thoughts
I don't think many locals would score Zeek's over Pags. Pagliacci's isn't the best pizza in the country, or even in town, but I think it is probably the best delivery available city-wide. As someone said above, the key is to order the crust well-done and to get an order of the seasonal gelato for dessert.
Zeeks Pizza: Seattle's Decent Mini-Chain Inspires Deep Pizza Thoughts
I would definitely say Pagliacci's over Zeek's..and agree with arbeck on saying well-done crust :) A couple other amazing spots are Pegasus on Alki Beach in West Seattle, it has a great thick and crispy, not doughy, crust and they layer all of the toppings underneath the cheese, definitely try the Tom's Special, which has spicy pepperoni, sunflower seeds and a healthy dosage of other toppings that make it unique and delicious..and Madame K's in Ballard, they have a bbq chicken pizza which is great on their thin crust, and the traditional bad boy which is full of meat and sauce and has a very generous amount of cheese on their "deep dish" crust, and one of my all time favorites is the "Artie Parmie". They also have a specialty dessert, the "screaming orgasm" which is just that..absolutely incredible..it is a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, slightly undercooked, still in the skillet, topped with Vanilla ice cream..cannot be beat!
Autumn Candy
Fall candy? Hmm. I think those candy corn pumpkins are my fave....but they are so sugary....I love roasted marshmallows....so I choose that.
Autumn Candy
i hated mary janes, circus peanuts, and any palmer mocklate as a kid, loved peanut butter cups and krackels the most. always traded my tootsie candies.
funny thing is now i am addicted to those mary janes! i used to hate them so much, you guys should give them another chance!
Autumn Candy
I've never been a big fan of hard candy like jolly ranchers, lollipops, etc. I'm also not a fan of tootsie rolls
My favorite candies were the chocolate ones - peanut M&Ms, Reese's, Three Musketeers, etc.
Autumn Candy
Hated: all those generic hard candies especially the ones wrapped in that faux strawberry wrapper, Nestle's Crunch, Krackle or any other kind of chocolate with krispies, tootsie rolls and pops
Other hated non candy items: getting raisins, plastic wrapped apples or carrots, pennies, getting toothbrushes in the treat bag
Loved: Brand name bars especially Snickers, Reeses, M&M's. also small snack size bags of Doritos, chips -also one house every year gave everyone a goody bag with all name brand candies--WE LOVED HER! I would switch my costume and then go back again...:o)
Loved (non candy items) getting a 10.00 bill in my bag one year...
Autumn Candy
Hated: Mr. Goodbar, Crackle, Crunch, Smarties
Loved: the black and orange chewy candies everyone else hated, non-chocolate flavored Tootsie Rolls (especially vanilla in the blue and white wrapper), Hershey bars.
The best part was that there was one woman who lived around the corner who gave out FULL SIZED, brand name candy bars. We never saw her any other time, but she was our favorite neighbor.
Best way to eat ice cream?
i'm the only person i know who does this - if there is anyone else, please confess! i NEED my ice cream to be nice and soft and melty, but have no patience, so i always zap a cold bowl of it in the microwave for ten seconds to take off the chill. am i the only one?
What childhood foods have you outgrown?
These stories have been so heartfelt that they propelled me to make this a topic of discussion amongst my class.
Photo of the Day: Turtle Attacks Strawberry
I am jealous of a turtle! We can't get strawberries any where near that nice around here.
Great post!
