Serious Eats Gift Guide: New York Food

I think Tal on 86th St. has the best bagels in NYC. Has anyone been to Bagel Oasis lately? I used to love them, but I feel like the ownership may have changed a couple of months ago. The bagels seem different to me. I do the reverse commute out to LI, and I prefer to stop at Tal on my way out of the city.

I love LRS on BBCA. Their verson of Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares is also a thousand times better than the US version. It is much more like a documentary, whereas the US version delivers a lot of totally faked drama.

The hot dogs at Papaya King have lost their snap & are a facsimile of their former self. I like Criff dogs & even Arties are OK, but I just came back from pilgramages to Super Dooper Weenie (CT) & Rutt's Hut (NJ) and these two different style dogs are both far superior to Papaya King now. Gus Poulos would not have approved.

As someone who frequents bagel oasis and loves bialys, please let me issue a warning: do not get bialys at bagel oasis. their bagels are great, but their bialys are terrible. I'm not saying their bialys just aren't as good as the bagels; their bialys are terrible.

Whoa, you put Ben's Best in Rego Park on here. I've been wondering about this place since I first noticed it, despite walking by it all the time, only about 6 months ago. That good huh? I will have to make a stop there now instead of just "thinking about it" for a while now...

Nicholas Cage as Ronny Cammareri in Moonstruck!!! I cannot believe he didn't make it to the list...he had a wooden hand!

Babette in "Babette's Feast". And of course Gareth Blackstock in "Chef!", and his kitchen menial Everton, who makes sauces with the washing up water. What is the essence of good cooking?

Elzar is so not as cool as Bender.

That's why my flash drive is named Bender and not Elzar. (It plugs into my computer which is named "Planet Express". Yeah yeah, I'm a dork.)

I made something like this as a quiz a few months back, but I guess it is pointless now because all of the answers are spoiled! I cant believe they came up with 43! I had trouble thinking of 16. Then again, I tried not to think of too obscure ones people wouldn't get, also I am happy that I thought of a few they didn't! and used more relevant pictures of the people actually cooking. here it is

Original BBC programming is pretty much always better than their American counterparts, from Kitchen Nightmares all the way to Couples.

But on to Marco Pierre White - you know what I want more than anything? For Mario Batali to be a guest on one of the episodes. That would be the sweetest thing ever.

Batali still hates White's guts, right?
