Daily Slice: Original Pizza, Oak Park Mall, Overland Park, Kansas

I haunted the Independence Center back in the day, which sounds like a carbon copy of Oak Park on the other side of the state line. It was always a choice between the Original Pizza or the One Potato Two. Pizza usually won. There's a Taco Via in Lee's Summit as well. Man I love those nachos w/jalapenos on a tostada shell.

I'm always predisposed to liking a place that calls itself a coffee shop. Completely different from a coffeehouse, mind you.

Wait, I forgot a few! Marco Polo, at 103rd and State Line, Jasper's (a famous local Italian restaurant) pizza outlet. Italian Delight in KCK, http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/34/380992/restaurant/West-Kansas-City/Italian-Delight-Kansas-City

Pizza in Missouri

I echo the love for Tim's Pizza and Fun House in the eastern suburbs of KC.
Santora's on Main in KC for excellent NY-style, and Minsky's for classic Midwestern pizza. D'Bronx is good, but overrated. Spin Pizza (several locations) and Pizza Bella are doing excellent modern high end pies. Lastly, I heart Grinder's for pizza in the Kansas City Crossroads.

Kenji, love your columns and your recipes! Just FYI: Chambers of commerce are not governmental institutions, but collective groups of local business owners that are usually very interested in promoting their locality for tourism. This guy totally went the extra mile for you though, lucky you!

The United States of Pizza: Kansas

Grinders is damn good, I prefer it to D'Bronx for a New York-style slice. I will confess to trying out their Philly-cheese steak pizza after a few beers and found it gloriously messy and delicious. Although I have been favorably impressed by Santora's on a recent scouting mission. Minsky's and Waldo are classics. One east Missouri side favorite of mine is Fun House (multiple locations, Raytown and Independence being best) Medium thick, but not too bready pie, good sauce-cheese-toppings ratio. It's kind of a childhood thing, maybe. Tim's Pizza in Independence is similar but even better.
