Holiday Entertaining- Is this Appropriate?

I throw a thanksgiving party for friends a couple weeks before the actual holiday and I ask that people bring any hard liquor they'd like to drink. I always do all the food, have mixers, wine, and beer, and make mulled cider but I'm still starting out and can't afford to stock everyone's booze of choice.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Korin Knife

I use a Shun Chef's knife for most things, but my favorite knife in the world is my dad's custom made Japanese knife. We went and had it made when we were in Tokyo. Great memory, great sharp knife.

It's Harder Than it Looks

I can make great pancakes. But I can't flip them. At all. I can't peel hard-boiled eggs neatly. Other people say I burn my bacon, but I think it's perfect. I'm a killer baker but I can rarely make brownies that turn out as well as a good mix. Or maybe I'm a sucker for mix brownies.

your priciest meal?

The French Laundry in 2008. I went with my dad to celebrate both of our birthdays. Probably about 800 for the two of us (With a TON of wine.) And so good. Sometimes it's as much about the company as the food.

Should Restaurants Allow Substitutions?

@trolley -- see my story above regarding father's office. I left the name off, but why bother?

Should Restaurants Allow Substitutions?

I totally understand not being open to making substitutions, but not being allowed an omission really irks me.

There's a restaurant with two locations in the Los Angeles area that makes a burger that consistently winds up on best burger lists. I've been dying to try it. But I can't eat cheese, due to a very real, very frustrating allergy. The restaurant in question refuses substitutions to the point where they won't leave the cheese of my burger due to an allergy. I don't ask for any other changes, just for them to leave the cheese (which is on top of the patty, not mixed in) off, because of an allergy. They won't do it. Not only have I never had the burger, I haven't been back. One of their branches is walking distance from my house. It is a good place to meet friends. It has a great beer selection and very good fries. But they've lost my business.

About granita

Website:

Location: Los Angeles, CA

About: A lively, snarky, 20-something journalism student and pastry chef with a weird cheese allergy and the kookiest kitchen ever. Seriously. There are doll hands coming out of the wall.

Favorite foods: Bacon, sushi, sour cherries, ice cream (even the weird flavors served at scoops in LA), pig, bacon wrapped hot dogs with onions, pineapple, and jalapeno, fresh baked bread, Mashed potatoes, dad's salmon pasta

Last bite on earth: KFC fried chicken in a biscuit with butter, gravy, and honey.
