Definitely Del's frozen lemonade. Though I make a mean fizzy lifting drink of freshly muddled lemons or limes, vodka, and a splash of cointreau.

Looks half good...I could live without the Julie part and just stick to Julia.

Michael has many meathead-like qualities. Most assholes are just that way and don't know it, Michael seems to try at it.
I like both Voltaggio's, but they would really have to be outstanding to both make it to the final three. It could be compelling telie for the episode where they go from four to three. Could there really be the two of them in the final three?
"On the Line" does a great job of explaining the Ripert way. Will JC be the poster child for "anti-Ramsay/ MP White" school?
Laurine is an absolute mystery to me after two entire shows. I remember nothing about her.
It was about this time last season that we thought Ariane was going to be the next to go. Is Jesse this season's Ariane?

I don't have a problem with her bringing it up and stating her opinion and standpoint. But repeatedly bringing it up like that. It was annoying. But, I'm sure the producers and editors did their part in playing it up.
Additionally, it seemed a little awkward for the rest of the contestants when they got back to the house post-prep and she was still complaining.

What bothered me most about the same-sex marriage discussion was how the producers decided to frame Preeti and Ashley in the same shot and show it from 3 different angles. What was that all about?

@cheesebreadbutter no, I'm just a 16 year-old kid. I was thinking about starting one, maybe I should get on that because I love food and like to write... which blog? you got me curious

Shuffer: Sorry but that rationale just doesn't fly. Signing on for a cooking show in Vegas, and then pouting because they want you to cook for a wedding-related event is just juvenile. She even admitted that she knew it was probably going to happen. So what's her problem, exactly? She seemed to have a beef with Top Chef for 'putting her in that situation' more than society in general for 'not letting her get married'. Imagine a chef who is in Gambler's Anonymous who signs on for Top Chef: Vegas and then pisses and moans because they keep asking him to roll dice and play poker as part of the challenges. Man up, Nancy. You knew what was going to be involved before you showed up, so you have no one to blame but yourself.
Also of note, the best hamburger I've ever had in my life was at a restaurant where the chef was a very strict vegetarian (for morale reasons). She managed to take his personal convictions out of the picture and give the customer what he wanted. Why is Ashley so special
One of two things is going on. Either Ashley is a spoiled, whiny little attention whore who has to piss on everyone else's good time (in which case, she needs to be the next to go), or the producers just injected a little manufactured drama to boost ratings (in which case, Top Chef is not the show I thought it was and is, in fact, more like Real World)

perhaps when this episode was recorded, california's prop 8 was in the news. it may seem a little removed from the public eye right now, but when the california supreme court was handing down its ruling, it was hard for anyone in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community to ignore.
any chef can bring his/her politics to the table and reap/suffer the consequences.
as far as controversy is concerned, would you cook for an anti-abortion or pro-choice function if your personal politics disagreed? maybe. maybe not.
but would top chef force the contestants to do it?

Forget Ashley. Let's figure out who this season's Leah & Hosea are going to be!!
Watch It with Us: 'Top Chef Las Vegas,' Ep. 2
@pbelardo My take on Ashley's same-sex tangent (which I'm in favor of btw) was to remember the audience the producers are editing for. Bravo TV has a huge following in the gay population and this was a way to speak to an issue many are concerned with.
Glad Eve is gone, just wasn't a good fit for the show.
Please let's get rid of Jesse. STOP CRYING!

I agree that the same-sex marriage "controversy" seemed liked it was a bit forced and set up or at least egged on by the producers. Notice that most of the gays who got dragged out to the griping table just sat there and never said a word about it.
I guess the chick who was so upset will never take a job catering a wedding or cooking dinner for a couple on their anniversary or honeymoon. Please.

I am way late to the party on this one because i just watched the episode on DVR last night, but a couple of thoughts on Michael Chiarello:
He's going to be in the finale. Especially with Art gone, he is by far the most telegenic and charismatic of the chefs up there. Yes, he can come off as a bit of a douche. But that 'limp wrist' comment, terrible as it was, was funny. and his cooking is solid. as for the lemon- yeah, he squeezed it with his teeth. THE OUTSIDE. it's not like he used his tongue to extract the juice and then spit it into his dish. lemons are tough and slippery, and if he didn't have a juicer, that was no doubt the best way to get out the most juice. i'm surprised the attitude here isn't more: "professional kitchens are chaotic environments and sometimes you have to improvise; there's probably a lot that goes on in there that we don't see that we wouldn't necessarily want to see; but the food tastes great all the same. it's not like he dropped it on the floor.
Hard to know who will win at this point... Chiarello and Bayless seem to have had the most consistent performances. Perhaps one of them will pull a "Hosea" to Lo's "Carla" and Keller's "Stefan".

What a terrible episode. Upon hearing the dietary restrictions, the chefs should've hogtied ZD and her friends then force-fed them offal.

@ peekpoke
1) Not necessarily, not always. You could take the banana part of bananas foster and put it with other ingredients. Or make sorbet (coconut sorbet can be very creamy). Or some sort of sauce.
2) Stove top rice pudding! Starchy rice will stick together without eggs (you don't usually dump eggs in risotto, do you?). And what's wrong with coconut flavored rice pudding? Isn't that a traditional dessert, when made with black sticky rice? There are also plenty of other nut-based milks that would have worked.
Obviously, anything vegan was outside of Art's comfort zone (which I find somewhat ridiculous, since chefs should know how to prepare fruits and vegetables). But even he said that he knew how to make sorbet, which would have been way better than rice cream! Like I said, I think he just freaked out. If he had calmed down, he might have figured out a way around the restrictions.
BTW, I really liked Rick Bayless' commentary about the episode on his blog.

A few problems:
fruit/nut desserts are served with custard or ice cream, puts him back with the same problem.
same problem with bananas foster, needs ice cream
Vegan rice pudding is tough since the dairy is most of the flavor. How would you replace the milk/eggs? He could have used coconut milk, but then it's going to be coconut flavored.
Once you start talking nut purees, you are WAY outside Art's comfort zone.
He was screwed.
Watch It with Us: 'Top Chef Masters' Episode 8
@ peekpoke ... you can buy gluten-free oats. I think he probably could've made a topping with brown sugar and nuts, or gone with a fruit and chocolate dessert. Bananas foster? Poached pears or peaches? A cashew or macadamia puree with those strawberries? A fancy rice pudding?
Honestly, my impression was that he got so freaked out about the restrictions that he couldn't think about what he could make, and ended up choking.
Watch It with Us: 'Top Chef Masters' Episode 8
Art didn't make any of his classic cobbler type desserts for a simple reason. No gluten allowed, that means no wheat flour, and no oats.
Pretty hard to make most classic baked fruit desserts without those.
Sure... you can use rice flour, and xantham gum to adapt many recipes that depend on pure white flour. But it takes experience. Or he could have tried one of the non-gluten baking mixes, but they are often gritty or off tasting.
He really was screwed, it's very hard to cook Southern comfort food that is totally vegan, and gluten free.
(and I can't stand Art, don't think he belongs on this show)

Apparently Art's almond brittle recipe contains butter (it's on the Bravo Web site)? I sincerely hope he didn't feed vegans dairy, but his recipe calls for it. I hope he subbed EB ...

Being that I have her same dietary restrictions (I am a Vegan Celiac, too), I watched this show eagerly. I thought all the entrees sounded delicious, but that dessert~ ugh. Anyone who has had "rice cream" will tell you... don't go there! Coconut milk "ice cream" is so delicious, if Art had used that instead, Anita MIGHT have been the one to go home.
Watch It with Us: 'Top Chef Masters' Episode 8
Whoa, what's with all the vegan hate? I'm a little taken aback; vegan food can be/is often very delicious, and any accomplished chef should be able to handle it. Didn't Alain Passard turn L'Arpege into a vegetarian restaurant because he wanted a new challenge?
I'm glad, too, that Anita didn't go home, though I had no idea what she was thinking with cheeseburger soup. Cheese soup, ok, but I don't want little meatballs in it.
