Cook the Book: 'L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook'
Tiny as it may be in a grocery store parking lot in Lexington, KY my favorite farmer's market vendor is a smaller dairy farm who makes their own ice cream. I was happy to see a red velvet cake ice cream with real cake inside! So tasty!! My dad farmed for 25 years, so we love supporting our local farmers!
Served: Your Waitress Gets Reprimanded
When our early out server's shift is over they can sit at the bar and have a drink. Why should we have to change our clothes just because we worked that night. I have just as much right to sit at our bar as anyone else, and if we are patronizing the place we work that is a good sign! Hannah some people just want some attention, or are trying to get a free meal out of your restaurant...it happens!
Served: Night from Hell
I am thankful that my restaurant is small and has not yet felt the need to converted to gift cards, but we have gift certificates. The unfortunate side of this is that if a table had a $100 meal and a $50 gift certificate and $50 on their credit card I have been tipped only for the $50 on the credit card. Moral of the story, PAY ATTENTION! Also all gift card credit cards are too much trouble!

Good eats in Lexington, KY
I would like to add in a shout out for Gumbo Ya-Ya (now I want that for lunch today...) because of the awesome flavor found in their dishes that I prefer to other cajun places in town. Another great place downtown is Sawyer's, which is like a burger joint with a topping bar. The chips are awesome and you don't even have to get the fries for it to be a good meal, you can choose to sit in the area where you serve yourself, or another smaller area where you can be waited on by a server.
Served: Feverishly Looking for a Restaurant Job
I am the default hostess in our restaurant. When our tiny and adorable high school hostess can't come in for the weekend I am automatically the first option, because I hosted for 2 WEEKS when our restaurant first opened. I think it has a lot to do with how personable and friendly you are to strangers and while the money isn't great, it is a definite reflection on you...which it can't be too bad to be seen as personable and friendly right?
Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable
I commented last week and want to do so again to say that I admire you for putting your stories out there for everyone to read and judge. As a server I feel more comfortable with my manager handling such a situation but can't say enough about servers who actually care enough to make a situation right! There are too many of them out there who just don't care and are passing through to make a quick buck. Keep it up Hannah!!
Served: The Ballsy Waitress
Now I only serve at a small fine dining restaurant in Kentucky but we would never ask anyone if that is all they meant to leave and I have been left less than 10% a few times. You usually deduce that they are just cheap because they also split a beer but I would prefer sending the manager over and asking if they enjoyed everything. Then if they have a problem they can comfortably express it to someone besides the server...otherwise you just deal with it and go on!
Serious Grape: Mixing Up a Case of Wine for Spring
If you are looking for a great summer/spring patio wine then you have to try the Due Uve Sav Blanc/Pino Grigio mix, it is 50/50. Light with a rich fruity nose, you will not be disappointed. Another great zin is the 2006 Napa Zellers which has a nice peppery taste on the front and then a great jammy taste when you finish. We have these at the restaurant I work at and they are huge!
Stick With Thin Mints; The New Girl Scout Cookie Flavors Are Nothing Special
I must be the only person who absolutely loves the Dulce De Leche cookies! I bought a box for my boyfriend and ended up eating half of them. I only wish the Girl Scouts would reappear so I can buy more this year!
Served: On Dishing
I was introduced to my now boyfriend by his brother and he didn't want to have anything to do with me, so I approached him shortly after the introduction and introduced myself again and we ended up chatting for a long time....and here we are over a year and a half later. Its all dependent on the guy, go after what you want and if its right it will happen. Great column Hannah!
Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable
So I didn't see the last post, and I haven't read all the comments, but it's a topic that depends on the situation, imo. If it was a large group of people, I would ask again, because that does eat up a lot of one waitress's time. I dined at a nice little place with a friend a few months back, and it was my second time there (pretty sure the waiters recognized me). I had tipped well the first time, as it was a great experience, and the second time, my friend and I completely miscalculated the tip. My waiter came back around and asked us if everything was ok. It was a bit awkward, but I'm glad he did ask, because he deserved more than the $3 we had somehow managed to leave.
Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable
I think the whole idea of tipping is ridiculous: do you tip the toll collector for taking your money? Do you tip the gas man for reading your meter? Do you tip your IT guy for fixing your computer? Of course not. Now, obviously, they don't live on tips. GUESS WHAT: NEITHER SHOULD WAITERS! How insane is it that a customer has to pay basically twice: for the food and for the service? Can you imagine if we had to tip UPS person for delivering the package to your house? Here's another tidbit: are the dishes heavier at T.G.I. Fridays than they are in a fancy steakhouse with $100+ dishes? Where do you come off with a sense of entitlement to a $20 tip just because the food was $100, whereas at Fridays a $20 plate would only get a $4 tip? If restaurant you work at charges that much for food, let them pay you! Enough is enough!

Hannah, I've come late to SE and your writing, but have enjoyed it. I'll miss it, and I hope you will take up your blogging gift again soon. Looking forward to learning what group you're with. If they operate in the MidWest we will give any Chicago operations a try.
Lived in Santa Barbara for six years - some time ago - and SoCal is an entirely different world. Hope you like it. It may be a little harder to live there since the state iwent broke.

@Everyone:
I don't know where some of you get off being so rude, so I am pointing this at everyone. I work in the service industry. Two jobs, seven days a week, and I don't make enough for it. Every rude comment pisses me off. Why? Because you seem to be forgetting that everyone is human, and everyone has these crazy things called feelings. Hannah is being honest. Why is that such a sin in this world?
Working in the service industry is very very difficult. You have to constantly be "on". She's describing her life as it is, giving many people who have never experienced this sort of life, a glimpse at what it's like to be a waitress.
Both her and her boss were at fault. Her boss should provide somewhere private for paperwork. Her boss shouldn't be sitting around drinking while his staff is dealing with a crowd of any sort. Doesn't matter who you are, you should be on. Hannah shouldn't have been in the dining area. She wasn't serving, so she deserves an area where she can do her work in peace. She needs to discuss this with her boss. Also, she shouldn't be drinking on the clock. BUT, as an exception, if her boss is doing it, she can too. But, again, neither of them should be drinking.
Overall, I think that people just need to realize the purpose of this blog. You all sit here, typing away, arguing over the stupidest garbage. All of you are old enough to know better. Why can't you just read, and comment on your feelings ONCE. There is no need to respond to those who insult others. If they want to sound like stupid jerks, let them. But by responding, you're just fueling their fires.
So, in the words of a Beatles song: Let it be.
And Hannah, you go girl!

There's one near here that's in a big red barn and it's right off of the highway so it's such a visual reminder. It's been there since I was a child so I have great memories of going there with my parents too.

There is a local farmer that sells his corn at my farmers market. We get corn from him a few times every summer. It is the best corn on the cob. It is perfection.
