Cook the Book: 'The Pioneer Woman Cooks'

The Pioneer Woman Cooks is one of my favorites, which is why this post grabbed my attention. Someone on a message board posted a link to her Crash Hot Potatoes, and I was hooked. Ironically, my other favorite is Vegan Lunchbox, which couldn't be more different. I think I love both for the beautiful photography. Thank you for the terrific offer!

Cook the Book: 'The Craft of Baking'

Made-from-scratch fudgy brownies with chocolate chips still warm from the oven. Better yet, with a big scoop of rich vanilla ice cream. Heaven!

Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'

When I was 16 or 17, I had some friends coming over for a Valentine's Day party, including a boy I had a crush on. I baked a heart-shaped cake, but when I put the layers together, the top started to crack. I tried to cover it with more frosting, but the crack got bigger and bigger till the whole cake just broke in half. We ended up with "broken heart" cake, I guess. Thanks for the interesting offer!

Cook the Book: 'L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook'

We had the privilege of taking a culinary tour of the LA Farmer's Market recently, and Pampas Grill was our favorite stop. As far as fresh produce, any place that sells beautiful tomatoes is tops in my book. Thank you for the offer!

Cook the Book: Eugenia Bone's 'Well-Preserved'

I'd like to can marinara made from scratch with fresh tomatoes from the garden. I tried to make it a couple of times for the freezer, but it didn't work out well. Thanks for the offer!

Cook the Book: 'Almost Meatless'

I really like bean tostadas and burritos, and we always do them "build your own". My husband is a big meat lover, so I set out leftover chicken or turkey for him to add to his. Thanks for the yummy-sounding offer!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage

Outside the south I go for Quincy Street in Oxnard, California. Thanks for the offer!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Two Peter Luger Steaks

Today, it's porterhouse because I was just remembering a time when my parents bought half a cow and a freezer. I didn't know how lucky I was, but I used to come home from work in the middle of the night and pull a steak out of the freezer. The porterhouse was huge, tender, and very tasty. While it was cooking, I would mix fresh salsa and sour cream into an ugly but very tasty sauce. Thanks for the offer!

Today I'd go for a grilled ham and cheese with spicy brown mustard and tomato slices. Thanks for the offer!

Quincy Street in Oxnard, California is the best I've found outside the south. Thanks for the terrific offer!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Two Peter Luger Steaks

Today I'm in the mood for a charbroiled pepper-crusted sirloin. Make mine medium-rare, please. Thanks for the offer!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

Our family loves pork. When my baby sister was six months old, she looked on with longing as we ate pork chops for dinner. Our great-great aunt handed her a pork chop, and baby sis gnawed all the meat off the bone... Thanks for the terrific offer!

It depends on my mood, but a grilled ham and cheese with some honey mustard sounds good right now. Thanks for the offer

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

My ultimate pork memory is my very first pulled pork sandwich...with lots of hot sauce, and piled high with cole slaw.

Cook the Book: 'Second Helpings of Roast Chicken'

I think my single most used ingredient is marinara sauce. If it isn't, it's a combination of tomato products, because I use them almost every single day. I never seem to use up all my cilantro before it disintegrates into green sludge. I only use it for two dishes, so I suppose I should look for some more. Thanks for the offer--the book sounds fascinating!

Cook the Book: 'Olives and Oranges'

I adore a big helping of cucumber and tomato salad with just about any cold sandwich. Thanks for the offer!

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'Chocolate Epiphany'

I am torn between a pan of made-from scratch fudgy brownies (still warm from the oven, of course) full of melted semisweet chocolate bits, or...

An entire torte made with dense dark chocolate cake and filled with an orange-flavored chocolate mousse. Can you top that with ganache, please, and then decorate it with rosettes of whipped ganache?

Either way, if I can't have chocolate again, I would like a big pitcher of icy cold milk with that, please! Thanks for the offer of a really terrific sounding book.

Cook the Book: 'The Shun Lee Cookbook'

In my childhood my father served in Vietnam, and was stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station in California's San Joaquin Valley. I had the great honor to live close to, and patronize often, the Imperial Dynasty, a 5-star restaurant in Hanford. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed recently after many years because chef Richard Wing's descendant didn't want to take over when he retired. If he were still cooking, I would give him carte blanche, and just sit back and enjoy--ah, to bask in his glow!

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'Screen Doors and Sweet Tea'

I drink ice water most of the time, and crave it, but for a treat I love real lemonade (pulp and all) or herbal peppermint iced tea. Thanks for the offer--the book sounds like great way to get back to my roots.

Cook the Book: Lidia's Italy

I make Chicken Curry with all the little dishes of toppings for everyone to choose from. Lidia's cool, and I'd love to have this book--thanks for the offer!

Cook the Book: The Oprah Magazine Cookbook

Alton Brown. OK, he's not exactly a talk show host, but he talks a lot on Good Eats, and hosts Iron Chef. He's funny, smart, and makes good food. We'd eat whatever he'd like to cook with me. Thanks for the offer!

Cook the Book: The Cornbread Gospels

I can't get my favorite corn bread any more because it came from a little mom-and-pop BBQ joint thousands of miles from me in Clarksville, TN. It's actually a griddle cake, with lots of buttermilk flavor, and good country butter melting into it. Yum! Of course, they would never give out the recipe... Thanks for the offer!

Cook the Book: Nigella Express

It may seem strange to others, but I am V*E*R*Y S*L*O*W in the morning, and getting ready for work, or church, or whatever I have to do in the morning takes twice as long as it would if I were doing it in the afternoon or evening. To deal with that, the night before I lay out my clothes and morning meds, pack my tote or backpack, gather breakfast items, pack a lunch if needed, and line up my toiletries on the bathroom counter in the order I use them. That way, when I feel like a zombie, I can just go through the motions--and still make out the door on time.

I apply the same principles when preparing for dinner guests, or just a family meal when we won't have a lot of time before, after, or between commitments.

Thanks for the offer!
