Serious Cocktails: Where to Start?

You can't really beat classics like the martini (gin only please!) and the manhattan, but only if they're well made. If you mix with fruit juices make sure they're fresh; it pays not to skimp here. Also, try to steer clear of vodka as its sole purpose is to be as minimally invasive as possible. Cocktails try to marry the flavors of mixer with liquor, not drown them out. That being said, pick a semi-decent bottle of booze to mix--no need to go all-out, top shelf (though if you are so inclined by all means go for it)--something palatable, something you wouldn't see four steps into a frat house.

Cook the Book: 'Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating'

Bittman has inspired me (with help from Michael Pollan) to eat a lot less meat. Specifically, I've stolen his idea to be "vegan before 6," after which I usually eat fish or occasionally chicken. Only very sporadically do I eat red meat.

Jonathan Gold, OG: LA Food Critic Digs Gangsta Rap

I've been listening to J-Gold on Good Food for years and this is the first time I've seen a picture of him. It's nuts when you finally put a face to a voice. I was expecting a small bespectacled man, not Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights!

The Supposed Top 10 Worst Fast Food Campaigns of All Time

Nope, an annoying and creepy commercial. It's upsettingly bad. It makes me want to vomit while punching a baby. If I go to Quiznos it's in spite of this commercial. It takes the worst part of the Internet (telling yourself you'll never get x-minutes of your life back after watching something stupid like He-man singing Four Non-blondes) and sticking it into the worst part (barely) of television, the commercials. What's even more upsetting than the badness of this commercial (and the internet meme it originated from) is the fact that people find it funny. Are these the same people who think LOLcats is funny?

Trader Joe's Culinary Compendium Flyer

The compendium is like a mini flyer to fill in the time. Many of the products are old favs, and it's good to highlight things like the 19 cents bananas!

Flyers and the compendium are always free!

Some prices have gone up, but I know that egg and milk prices have gone down. Prices fluctuate all the time. I know, we have to change the signs everyday!

-From your friendly TJ employee!

From Serious Eats

Trader Joe's Culinary Compendium Flyer

The fearless flyer comes out several times a year but joes has started in the last few years releasing mini flyers at various points throughout the year such as at the start of spring and highlighting offerings during Thanksgiving and December holiday time.

From Serious Eats

FYI, it is free and the pix are quite entertaining. I did note however that prices have increased at TJ's as if overnight! I'm sure this compendium is not to blame....

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

  1. I thought beeturia (is that a word?) happened to everybody. It certainly happens to me. It's not that, but the price of beets that restricts my consumption. We're planting lots of beets in our garden this year, the first garden I've had since my now grown son was a baby.
  2. I don't think my grandma ever smelled like a sweet, earthy, fragrant beet.
  3. I agree that beets taste like dirt. Only sweeter. This is not a problem.
  4. Does the President like coleslaw? Carrots? A nice vinaigrette with some dill in it? He ought to try this Beet and Red Cabbage Slaw: http://bit.ly/umafb. Just one bite, Mr. President, and then I'll take it off your hands.

kitchenhacker:
The man isn't allowed to have preferences?
Of course he is, but the thought of my favorite living president and my favorite vegetable never crossing paths is a little sad, that's all :)

"...getting their kale in a bunch"...

I love that expression and I'm totally going to use it the next time an opportunity presents itself.

From Serious Eats

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

Get a grip on your beats. I love beats but there is enought good veggies to not like one. Everyone should be able to not like something, without others getting their kale in a bunch.

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

Perhaps he has, and still doesn't like them. Some people don't, you know, no matter how nicely-prepared the beets are.

Who the hell cares? I'll eat his share. He can eat my share of mushrooms. Everybody's happy.

Most of you are too young to remember a similar broccoli furor that erupted when the first Pres. Bush admitted to hating that vegetable (Chou Peng excepted.) There must have been thousands of broccoli jokes after that (and some hurt feelings from broccoli growers.) At the very least, this garden should diffuse all the "arugula" criticism Obama got during the campaign. (Of course, no one at Serious Eats would find arugula elitist! But parts of the country did.)

From Serious Eats

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

Yay for the Presidential veggie garden. Beets make me gag - @cooklocal may be right, maybe its a genetic thing. But there's plenty of other good stuff to plant in DC, and don't forget the fresh local goodies at the Eastern Market and elsewhere.

From Serious Eats

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

I am not a fan of telling the president to eat 1 vegetable type he doesnt like. if he didnt like any and there was a risk that he was going to be ill, then speak up. otherwise, whatever.

and the west wing episode was after Bush (papa) said he didnt like broccolli and there was an up-roar over that.

From Serious Eats

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

There was a really hilarious episode of The West Wing when the president's aide told a cook not to make beans, because the president hated beans, and it caused a HUGE debacle with bean farmers and bean advocates. The episode concluded with one of the advisers essentially saying "Isn't it ok for the president not to like beans, and won't people understand that just because he doesn't like beans doesn't mean that he dislikes beans as a vegetable? Aren't the American people smart enough to realize that not everybody loves every food, and move on?"

This is exactly like that episode.

From Serious Eats

So, Ed, what you're saying is that you don't want President Obama to eat beets, just to grow them?

I'm a little lost here - was this flame/troll bait or something?

I also agree with DanielJ. I'm getting really tired of this fake stop-motion/cg trend in movies.

It looks like they've taken something awesome and given it a run to the generic-o-matic.

Agreed with DanielJ and AuntJone - one of the best things about the book is the illustration. The picture of the pancake on top of the school is my favorite page and the computer animation really doesn't do it justice. I'm disappointed - I love this book!

I fear that longtime CwaCoM readers will take offense to the loose translation. Is Grandpa even an important character in the film? And really, a Times Square scene but no mention of Chewandswallow? Maybe it's too soon to say based on that short trailer. That gargantuan pancake landing on the school does look pretty sweet when animated, though.
