Good eats in Lexington, KY

I might get slammed by a local but I spent a few weeks in Lexington for work and had a great steak at Malone's... And they had Sushi that was pretty good as well...

@Munkee... Im at a loss trying to figure out how you can feel bad for him... I understand that he took all of his savings and tried to start a hedge fund... Was 750K a year not enough for him and his family? And also how greedy do you have to be to risk EVERYTHING YOU HAVE including your family to try and make more $$$? He rolled the dice using his family and savings as chips... he lost... And I agree they are on food stamps but they still have all these toys that they could get rid of?

wow... incredible, but at the same time... how can you be making 750K a year and not be saving and investing for bad times? Even with the least aggressive investments you should be able to live off of that money for quite some time... I understand the economy has tanked, but with the irresponsibility (both in the investments and the savings) that I'm assuming must have occurred, I most certainly do not feel bad for him or his family, he took a big risk and lost ...

I would like to add in a shout out for Gumbo Ya-Ya (now I want that for lunch today...) because of the awesome flavor found in their dishes that I prefer to other cajun places in town. Another great place downtown is Sawyer's, which is like a burger joint with a topping bar. The chips are awesome and you don't even have to get the fries for it to be a good meal, you can choose to sit in the area where you serve yourself, or another smaller area where you can be waited on by a server.

I want to chime in for Alfalfa (a MUST), Ramsey's (but only on high street/Maxwell), Bourbon n' Toulouse, and Joe B's. But Alfalfa needs more shouts, people. Get the red beans and rice, the avocado grill, or any curry special. The menu is wide ranging, to say the least.

I went to college in Lexington and would second most of the recommendations. Some comments:

Joe B's: The breadsticks are incredible, and I dream about them to this day. I went back to school last Spring to recruit and took some graduate students out to Joe B's for beer, pizza, and breadsticks. Half of the kids had never been there...let alone had a breadstick! I had to talk with my old professors to see what they were teaching these kids...

Ramsey's: Do they still have meat-and-three? Basically, you pick an entree (eg, pork chop, catfish, pot roast, etc.) and three southern-style sides (fried orka, macaroni and cheese, etc.)...good stuff. Ramsey's has multiple locations now, but when I was in school there was only one location...the one near campus (Woodland and Maxwell?).

Lynaughs: An Irish Pub on Woodland Ave. Didn't see this mentioned on anyone's post. Go for the beer and the O-Round. A great flame-broiled hamburger. Bring your ear-plugs..it could be loud.

Tolly-Ho: A Greasy Spoon Dive. A favorite haunt when I was in graduate school. A Tolly-Ho with Hashbrowns was the de-riguer order at 1am...or 6PM for that matter...basically a frozen hamburger with frozen hashbrowns. I dream about this place too. Don't expect much and your expectations may be met.

You MUST go to Billy's Bar-B-Q on Tates Creek Rd. in the Chevy Chase neighborhood. It's the best bbq in town--especially pulled pork. The mutton will give you an authentic tast of Western KY bbq. The burgoo, slow-cooked green beans, and jalapeno cornbread are all excellent. GREAT french fries, too.

Now I'm hungry!

I love Malone's and Sal's and it would have been a recommendation for sure but they said the less fancy the better. I can't think of many locals that would slam you for Malone's. I can definitely vouch for their steak but have not heard good things about their sushi. Spalding's Bakery is an excellent call as well but you have to get there early (once they sell out they close) and it's a little out of the way.

jcrisdo in orlando-where do you like to eat? Family is coming to Orlando on the 4th for a week and we're looking for good but inexpensive food like BBQ, breakfast, ethnic. Don't care much for the park food.

Southern-ish Maine. Do not like it. Moving to Brooklyn in a few months for pastry school and planning to stay there. For a while, at least.

dbcurrie - tell me about it, sounds like the first time I got stuck behind a tractor on my way home from work, or the traffic jam on the highway the first day they put the lambs out to pasture in the spring. My favorite is the farmers that drive their tractors to the store for more beer because they're too drunk to drive a car!

I'm a mere hour or two away from you--in Mid-Misery! I'm 30 miles southeast of Jefferson City. I grew up in Idaho and Utah, then I married and moved to Boston. Big time culture shock! I loved living there. Then lived in Tempe, Arizona; El Centro, California (don't ask); and had a glorious 15 years in San Diego. I remarried, and my husband went to grad school at MU in Columbia. It has taken quite an adjustment to living in this small, rural town of 1600 people. However, we've been here almost two years and I'm still relatively sane. Don't know how much longer it will last, though. LOL!!

I like to see Canada representing! But let me add my name to the list of folk from London ON! I lived there for 13ish years, and am only down the street an hour or so now.

I am back fairly frequently and am always happy to see new restaurants open. When I first moved there in 1991, there was not many options for either fine dining or 'ethnic' dining...now I'm glad to see that there are more options of both, if only you get off the main drags (Wellington South etc)
