I was shocked, shocked, I tell you, to see that photo of the Chicago Dog without the neon green relish - a shanda!

great review! finally got to try the burger out last week and i thought it was definitely one of the top five burgers i've eaten.

if you haven't yet, you must try the sweet potato fries! i'm usually not even a fan of sweet potato fries, but the golden state's are thick cut and really delicious. love this place.

Finally got over to try the burger tonight, and found it to be a disappointment. The bun, while not too sweet, was on the verge of being stale. I liked the cheese, didn;t find the bacon to be overhwelming, and was pleased they decided to leave out the tomato, but there was way too much arugala, which, as noted, adds little. Most significantly, if found the buger to be majorly lacking in juiciness (especially for a 78/22 grind), and beefiness.

I suspect this burger would have benefited greatly from griddling as opposed to grilling. I'd really like to see a burger shop offer otherwise the same burger prepared in either method. Then both the proprietor and patrons would be able to make an educated decision as to which way is better.

ShawnaAdora had it right...and I guess we're the only ones....

MIRACLE WHIP right from the jar! I eat it sprinkled with black pepper. If I feel fancy, I spread it on crackers!
Cold Chef Boyardee ravioli's from the can ( a childhood vice)
Peanut butter
Eagle Brand milk
Garlic stuffed olives captured with a fork

@Traveller - you MUST have been upset. I can't imagine eating a jar of grainy mustard by itself! No, capers would be my choice, I love em.

BTW, congratulations on getting that dissertation over and to an old broad like myself, a "B" sounds pretty damned good.

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

Peanut Butter; Olives; Pickles; Baked Beans; Chef Boyardee; Condensed Soup; Vegetables; Ice Cream; & Almost anything that doesn't require removal from the container for cooking. If it's cooked or sufficiently prepared in the container, I'll eat it right from said container.

I love to eat my own canned whole tomato's a quart size, right out of the jar. Reminds me of my mom and grandma and the farm in Ohio, great comfort and memory food for me. coco

When my sister & I went backpacking around Europe we were on a VERY limited budget... many times we arrived by bus in our next foriegn city, late at night, hungry & unfamiliar. I remember eating peas & corn cold out of the can after shopping at the 24-hour food mart in Barcelona... Dining on red wine & dark chocolate and jumping on the beds in our Paris hotel room... Eating Brie out of the package with a Swiss Army knife... Popping Pringles & chugging Fruitopia at 6am after a night of dancing & drinking in London...

Definately pints of icecream, gelato, sorbet, etc, many nights watching movies with my best friend, or doing a late-night "icecream run" with my sister & splitting a litre of Oreo...

I used to bake peanut butter cookies & eat them out of the pan

Pickles, pickled beets, pickled onions, relish, sauerkraut, olives, salsa, pasta sauce, condensed tomato soup, curried spinach, mushy peas, pie filling, peanut butter, jam, whipped topping, salad dressing, eggless mayonnaise, ketchup, bbq sauce... and yes, margarine...

PS I'm totally underweight, so I can justify eating an "entire" anything, including bags of cookies, a McCain cake, a frozen cream pie :)

@dixisue, I like pb & mayo sandwiches, no matter what kind of breat I have, also occasionally add a few slices of ripe banana on that...if out of pb, sit there with banana slices on a plate, each one gets a small blobette of mayo, also good this way on a Ritz cracker.

otherwise, out of can or jar it's:
tuna, drained or undrained
Bush's beans, or B&M, best tasting IMO
Spag/MB from the can, so easy now with the zip-off tops!
uncondensed cream of broccoli or cream of chicken soup
HAVE to taste at least 2 tbl of any new jar spaghetti sauce
herring in cream sauce, or just plain pickled w/onions
sardines, in hot sauce, mustard or oil
salmon from a can, also love to drink the "juice"
pickles from a jar

Smoked Oysters.
Pickled Herring in Cream Sauce.
Bread&Butter Sandwich Stacker Pickles.

Peanut butter, Cool whip, baked beans, dill pickles, chocolate cake frosting, and ice cream. A lot of times I'll dip chocolate chip cookies in the Cool whip or the chocolate cake frosting.

Man, I could go for an IB right now...I think most of a hot dog is where you eat it, be it at a ballpark or a favourite dog stand or in the backyard, with dad manning the grill. But I will never deny that a good hot dog can be great, though I would say it tastes better depending on circumstances.

Vienna beef dogs, especially the smaller natural casing size, are unique and pretty good. But not as flavorful as a Sabrett, Best (Newark, not Chicago), Boars Head, or some other beef dogs I can name. A lot has to do with what you were brought up eating. A lot of people I know who love hot dogs had their first taste of a Vienna Beef frank when a guy from Chicago opened up a place selling Chicago style hot dogs and Italian Beef.

His dogs were authentic and he even got a letter praising his dogs as authentic by the president of Vienna Beef. But most of the people I know who tried them didn't care for them. They did like his burgers and Italian Beef sandwiches though.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...the best hot dog on earth is a Vienna Beef, eaten at Comiskey Park on a hot summer day.

Where is the Astor Center?

Papaya King makes (or used to as of 2 years ago) hot dogs it sells in supermarkets. The Gristede's at 5th b/t 8 & 9 are the only place we could find them. Since I am lazy and don't want to walk 4 blocks I make do with Boar's Head w/natural casing.

Is there a serious caseless hot dog following? Since my Platonic dog is a NY Deli Dog, the lack of snap in a dog is always a disappointment. Otoh, in Berlin -- without a doubt the hot dog capital of the world -- one can choose currywurst with or without skin. I love that there they have these little paper circles which are hot dog/sausage holders, no need to fill up on bun. Genius.

The Flint coneys at Angelo's are the only Michigan-style coneys which use Koegel Viennas. Detroit coneys you refer to are either Dearborn natural casing hot dogs at the American Coney Island, while at National Coney Island they use their own National brand of hot dog. Koegel Meats does make a Detroit-style chili/coney sauce, but it's only available for sale to Detroit-area restaurants.

From Talk

Hot Dog Hootenanny Report

And if you are not able to venture to Detroit for a real coney, you can order a Coney Kit! Comes with dogs, buns, chopped onions, mustard, absolutely everything you need. Well, except the Vernors, omnomnom.

If you are able to venture to Detroit for a real coney, PLEASE treat yourself to Lafayette Coney Island. If it's full (it's tiny) go to American next door.

My dad has been taking us there since we were little kids, and now at 24, they are still delicious.

Nothing better than a coney, a loose, and a Vernors!

The art of Hot Dogs eh! I came over from England 10 years ago, and realized I really was a hot dog virgin - I didn't realize there were so many different types of hot dogs!
