Where to Eat - Jackson, MS

Lived there for 19 years...

These are in the city, and pretty accessible:

Que Sera Sera (their red beans and rice are phenomenal)
The Elite (classic restaurant, good enchiladas)
E&L BBQ (it's downtown, best around, not the nicest neighborhood)
Broadstreet Bakery (great lunch spot)
Primos (good all around, decent shrimp poboys)

These are just a few of the good places... if you'd be interested in the surrounding area of Jackson, let me know! And Hal 'n Mal's is OK, but to me, the bar scene is why you'd go there, not the food.

And if you try any of them, I'd love to know what you thought.

Poll: Kids In High-End Restaurants: Way or No Way?

I work in a "high end restaurant"... we'll leave it at that.

Either way, the big point is whether or not the child can behave.
If they can, then it isn't a big deal. It becomes an ordeal when the child misbehaves and becomes a nuisance to others guests who are paying >$100 to eat. That makes sense. And as much as I enjoy kids, seeing them hang of the back of a booth and trying to play with the peony flowers at our main table just doesn't sit well with me when it comes to guest service and experience. Think of it as your main server chewing gum- some may find it offensive, others may not; either way it's rude and could have been avoided.

But hey, that's MY opinion.

Impromptu Pepsi Throwback Taste Test

Although trying to cut back on sodas, I couldn't resist this as well. I fared about the same as the first comment with my girlfriend. Along those lines, we also splurged for the Mountain Dew throwback with the same results- a less cloying mouth feel with the sugar. It almost felt more "innocent," if that makes any sense. I also concur with the lighter taste of sweetness, but I wouldn't say it's lacking. If I bought these again, I'd much rather have this even though the difference isn't easily perceivable.

The one thing I wish (despite the small can) would be something fun about the original art of these cans without me going and using a search engine.

'Hanger Tea,' T-Shirt Teabags

And as cute as they may be... tea is better without the restraints of a teabag.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage

Growing up in Mississippi, it was Louise's Open Pit BBQ (best "pork steak" ever), but now that I am living in New England the best I have found is Blue Ribbon, right outside of Boston, MA.

Cook the Book: The Essence of Chocolate

At a tea place near my current college, they serve a blended house specialty tea, Memories of Prague, that I love to go have after a simple meal. It is made with bittersweet chocolate and is served with honey and milk. Its not too sweet, and is so good to have during a conversation!

stick blender v. food processor

(for some reason I thought this was between stick blenders and a bar blender)... I think that food processors tend to tear food bits instead of pureeing them. I think that a good example of this is making a mayonnaise- I would rather use a food processor, on the other hand, the salsa I mentioned... it's all about the consistency!

stick blender v. food processor

This may be just me, but I feel that they have totally difference uses. Although if I must have a preference, I'd probably choose a stick. I know that there is nothing faster than shoving it into a pot to puree something. On the other hand, I love tossing a few ingredients into a blender (VitaMix for sure)- a nice tomatillo salsa comes to mind...
