greenbags

Has anyone seen this infomercial where a lady has these "greenbags" that she puts fruit and veggies in and they last like 4 times longer then "normal storing methods"? normally I don't believe infomercials but this would be a great product for me if it really did work. I live in Bermuda and produce here is terrible. even if you do get fresh looking stuff, it only lasts a day or 2 MAX. Has anyone tried these? do they work? even a little bit? I looked around but didn't see any helpful reviews online and I thought people would be more trustable on here then out there in the crazy interweb wilderness...

Another KitchenAid Question

I am not sure if this has been asked before but I couldn't find the question. I am buying a stand mixer as a gift (partly for myself) and I am wondering if people have suggestions about the different sizes and wattage. Price is of course an issue, but I would much rather spend the money then get something that does not do the job I want or breaks in a year. we wouldn't use it a ton, mostly for pizza dough and some candy and cookie making. some wattages ive seen are 275, 325, and 350 Is the low end model good enough?

Blerg! In bermuda food costs silly amounts. 8 bucks pound for tomatoes? 12 dollars a pound for chicken? 35 dollars a pound for halibut? whats crazy is the prices haven't really risen all that much here yet... maybe because they were soo high in the first place. oh yea and local costs much more then imported!

Top Chef: Block Rockin' Eats

wahoooo every week Andrew stays is another victory for bearded dudes! he is going all the way. as for product placement - Project runway was WAYYY worse, I don't think its all that bad on top chef, and as long as people have tivo's, we are going to keep getting more and more.

The 'Save Robert Irvine' Campaign Begins

wow everyone is so critical here. I think his show is one of the few good ones of all the new crap that food network is putting out these days. (URS and throwdown are sooo bad) and i also think he is responsible for its success. also he does a great job making the food delicious and on time every episode. Its FN's fault that they didn't look into the resume deeper but at this point i think its moot that he exaggerated a few things. what reason does gina neely have for being on TV? what about 2 dudes catering or whatever? if the show is good he should stay -thefoodinmybeard

Best TV Chef? Worst TV Chef?

Does anyone get Fit-TV? they have 2 cooking shows on there that I like. one with Nathon Lyon and one with Devon Alexander. I really enjoy both shows. they arnt master chefs or anything but both do fresh ingredient cooking and are healthy without trying to be. also because of less budget, the shows feel very natural, not overly produced like food network.

I am disapointed that I dont have the normal PBS lineup where I live because Ive heard they have great stuff on there. Ramsey is great on BBC but terrible on fox. and of course Bourdain is good on no reservations. what makes his show good is he is an excellent writer and the narrative is beautiful. as far as good old food network goes, glad they picked up jamie oliver, love AB, and I dont understand why Giada gets so much abuse! I think she is great. she is what got me started cooking a few years ago.

In Videos: Heston Blumenthal's Egg and Bacon Ice Cream

thats a crazy coincidence, a friend was going to a bacon party this past Friday and I helped her come up with a bacon ice cream recipe. we saw this recipe online and a few more and changed them a bit. she didn't want the eggy flavor this guy has. she was just looking for the bacon flavor. she ended up doing the soak overnight part and cooked it to about 160. she then put it in the blender, strained it, mixed with cream, cooled and put in the ice cream maker. apparently it was the star of the party. she has friends now.

I'm Rosezilla (named for my three year old daughter and the giant lizard thing that stomped Tokyo...it's what I call her when she's being...how you say...willful). My real handle is Mandy. I live in Santa Barbara County again after growing up here, but lived for 11 years in western Sonoma County...home of fabulous food and wines. It spoiled me rotten, to become an adult surrounded by all of that luscious produce and foodie opportunity. I managed a microbrewery's kitchen for 6 years, and have SERIOUS opinions about ales, should anyone care for them. Now I'm a home cook primarily, although I do a little catering here and there. My daughter's favorite foods are salmon and broccoli, so I feel as though I've triumphed a bit over the three-year-old beige-food diet. We do, however, eat at McDonald's every Friday after school...it's our little Happy Meal indulgence...and those tiny cheeseburgers are SOOO good. I live with and cook for my mother, as well. I am dating a high school band director, who has actually LOST weight being with me, as he's eating more asparagus and less fast food. I think that size 14 should be the new size 6. I am curvy, healthy, happy and active...and think that excellent foods should be part of everyone's diet. I am active in the "S'Cool Food" movement here, which tries to bring local and sustainable healthy food into school cafeterias. And I love, love, love this website.

My blog is restaurant-focused, covering New England and New York, so I'm seeing rising costs two ways: the higher menu prices and the higher gas prices.

Do I mind or have I changed? No. For me, my restaurant explorations and my blog are my hobby. So just as baseball fans pony up more each season to see the same number of games, I'm paying a little more to do what I enjoy, so why change?

I have changed as i seem to have lost my zeal for cooking. i have several kids i cook 3 meals a day and i seem to be cooking less "real" food and more processed (shudder)food. I love to cook but it is hard to find the foods that i like and my kids will eat here in my tiny town so i try my best. I used to blog daily about the delish things but it seems like nothing strikes my fancy anymore i don't feel that the things i cook are worth anyones time to read and i only post when it is good and or fabulous. My triple choco walnut brownies are roll your eyes up in a diabetic coma good but it is so hard to find the joy i once had. I hope that i will find my joy again but the prices are so high it is hard to cook as i choose to.

I think the question brings to the center the two types of food bloggers: the ones who cook to blog (design a recipe with the blog in mind, keep precise track so they can write it up, etc.) and those who blog to cook (I count myself here) who just cook and eat as normal, then write about it. Those that are in the second half might not even notice those changes coming about. It is in my nature to buy what is fresh and cheap, so that is what I cook with, so perhaps my ingredients are changing...but not to the point that it is a concern?

Yeah, maybe this is a call to blog about affordable, budget-friendly recipes during these times to help others.

Gordon Ramsay Is Not a Jerk; He Just Plays One on American TV

How come the American talkshow hosts seem to enjoy being "funny" and talk all kind of nonsense and act stupid when they invite Ramsay over to their show? I just watched 2 different talkshows via SE and they were pretty unbearable - the hosts i mean. Gordon Ramsay was genuinely interested in the cooking and they weren't.

I think my blogging has changed a bit as of late. Sometimes I will plan on trying out a new recipe specifically to blog about it, and then at the store I'll be inundated with insane pricing that is out of my budget, so I need to wait on that recipe. Writing new recipes is even harder, because I'll get a great idea on paper, and head out to shop for the ingredients for a rest run, and same thing, an ingredient has skyrocketed, and I know the people who use my recipes aren't going to be willing to shell out $3.50 for one red bell pepper that was .79 two weeks ago.

I'm having similar problems as ExpatChef as well. I really enjoy my blogging, I wouldn't do it otherwise, but I find myself frequently thinking of those who have to do without and are struggling with the rising prices. As a result, I have been doing more cost-conscious meals and budgeting suggestions...but I'm sure the people who really are in need aren't spending time reading blogs looking for friendly suggestions.

@alacto-- I grew up in Williamsburg! If you're still there, I'm quite jealous of your accessibility to Aroma's. I was a slave at the Cheese Shop for a few years, and while I can't stand the house dressing any more, oh the cheese and wine selection....mmmmm

Bro recently made these avocado eggrolls for a party. They are wonderful. We didn't use a sauce - no one noticed :D.

Whip 'em up and bring 'em down to the party!!
