Best Pizza in Boston?
Ohhhhhhhh I forgot about Picco until I followed that link up there. its really tasty there. and some damn good ice cream too. And is Scoozi still good on Newbury? I haven't been in a few years. Man I miss Boston. Good thing I have a plane ticket that says 11/25 BDA to BOS.
Best Pizza in Boston?
Emmas is not good. I was there 3 weeks ago and very excited because I had heard many good things, but as mentioned above, it was very crackery, floury and brittle. The crust did not have flavor. The painted pizza peel decor was really cool though!
As for the timeless Cleveland Circle debate of Pino VS Presto, I side with Presto. I have been known to say that if you were to fold a Presto pizza and allow the grease to drip into a container, you could fill 5 to 8 shot glasses with this juice. I would then take said 5 to 8 shots of pizza grease awesomeness.
And who said Uno's earlier? REALLLLY?

I made something like this as a quiz a few months back, but I guess it is pointless now because all of the answers are spoiled! I cant believe they came up with 43! I had trouble thinking of 16. Then again, I tried not to think of too obscure ones people wouldn't get, also I am happy that I thought of a few they didn't! and used more relevant pictures of the people actually cooking. here it is
Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks
I host pizza parties often and always ask people if they have any special topping requests beforehand. the weirdest request to me was pepperoni, pickles, and broccoli. we made it anyways and has now become one of the most requested pizzas in our arsenal. we call it the Craig special in honor of the original requester.
Taking liberties with dish names
I usually put quotation marks around a word if I am using it that way, for example I once sliced up a bunch of veggies and served it as pasta with corn fritters that acted like meatballs. the name of the dish to me was Thai "spaghetti" and "meatballs"... one sec, let me find it...... here it is....
Irrational (or rational) food prejudices you have had or have
yesterday this guy at my job was offered a qusadillia. he went to grab it and saw sour cream on it. he freaked out and jumped back saying "not with all that mayonase on it!" i said what are you talking about, that is sour cream. he said he doesnt eat anything white cause ever since he was young he relates it to a certain male bodily function. the man is 32. this is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. i started to run down the list

Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these commercials!!!! someone deserves a raise on Madison avenue for coming up with this one!! (sorry... I've been watching too much mad men).
I just think it is hilarious because it is so true that the general public has no idea about food. everyone is ready to rise up with fists over food issues but has no idea about the facts behind them. I've overheard so many conversations around the office where I have to hold my tongue and just listen to people drone on about the evils of this and that. whatever the hot new evil food is. I think this commercial gets it right. does this mean I will eat more HFCS? no, I will continue eating the same amount and that is not much.
Growing Cilantro?
I grew some for a short amount of time but it goes to seed above 80 degrees and that is when it looks weedy and has a funny taste. you need to watch it and trim it a lot and make sure to cut it before it flowers.
making your own cheese?
ricotta is VERY easy and a good place to start in my opinion
Wiener Water Soup
haha that reminds me of "hot ham water" from arrested development

Have higher food prices affected food bloggers?
Blerg! In bermuda food costs silly amounts. 8 bucks pound for tomatoes? 12 dollars a pound for chicken? 35 dollars a pound for halibut? whats crazy is the prices haven't really risen all that much here yet... maybe because they were soo high in the first place. oh yea and local costs much more then imported!
SE users: please introduce yourselves.
whats up everyone... my name on here comes from the TV show arrested development, I made it before I knew what my blog would be called. or even before I knew I would have a blog. but as the food pictures piled up on my hard drive, I figured I should put them to good use! my site is thefoodinmybeard.com I live in bermuda, moved here from boston a year ago for work. im 25, male
Best TV Chef? Worst TV Chef?
I miss "Microwave Master" with Donovan Jon Fandre, "Capril's Kitchen" with Caprile Pence, "Cooking Monday Through Friday" with Michelle Urvater and "Sunshine Cuisine" with Jean-Pierre Brehier.
As far as the worst, I would rather watch the chef on "The Muppet Show" than Alton Brown. David Rosengarten was so much more professional and didn't rely on forced humor.
Best Pizza in Boston?
Pizza Oggi, now in Cambridge, has some consistently great pizza. Great crusts, usually sprinkled with poppy seeds or whatever else is hanging around, and hight quality toppings. www.oggigourmet.com

Gordon Ramsay Is Not a Jerk; He Just Plays One on American TV
I think Ramsey is a real jerk. I was watching an episode of "The F Word" on BBC America. During the opening he introduced the two new chefs in the kitchen. One he described as " ...a 22 year old American girl from Los Angeles". Then, right after saying that, one can hear Ramsey's voice overdubbed saying "Unfortunately". Like the jerk added the insult in the editing room!
I thought about if for a second and then deleted all his shows from my DVR, and all future recordings. If the Scottish twit wants to pick on American girls, he can kiss my ass. What a freakin' loser.

check out these anti-HFSC and pepsi spoof advertisements, hilarious!!!
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
New research published in Environmental Health has revealed that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is contaminated with the toxic heavy metal mercury. That means that many of the products using HFCS may also be contaminated with mercury.
"Most people don't know how high-fructose corn syrup is really made. One of those processes is a bizarre chemical brew involving the creation of caustic soda by exposing raw materials to pools of electrified mercury in a large vat. Through this process, the caustic soda gets contaminated with mercury, and when corn kernels are exposed to this caustic soda to break them down, that contamination is passed through to the HFCS.
Another toxic chemical, glutaraldehyde, is also used in the production of HFCS. It's so toxic that consuming even a small amount of it can burn a hole in your stomach."

Give me good old sugar any day...
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
First, mad props to ilovebutter for breaking it down in such an accessible way. 3.9 GPA for good reason!! *applause*
Anyway, I would feel better if I knew what happens to the corn to make it HF... is it born that way (even through genetic engineering, which, in the olden days they called hybridization), as in are the actual kernels grown sweeter compared to other corn, or... is there some kind of toxic chemical added during refining to bust up the molecules and tip the balance to bump up that 5% of additional fructose? It would make a difference to me.
But, barring the scary artificial intervention above, based on the apparent chemistry of it, I don't see a huge problem. And, before I get lynched for that, yes -- there IS too much sugar everywhere. Duh. Extra caution in every way is totally advisable. That said, I can see the industrial appeal for soda makers wanting a smooth consistent syrup that stays dissolved when the drink is cold. I can also see why it's in baked goods... because... sweeter sugar means more excited yeast, no? Resulting in fluffier bakery?
And using corn is cool! Go USA! We know corn, we brought corn to the world! Sugarcane, a little trickier, but we do have dibs on Hawaii, so, I suppose we have a friend there. I suppose we could also squeeze beets or carrots for it, but... that seems like it would be more difficult (involving even bigger nastier factories). If we weren't doing it, surely there would be someone selling us high-fructose rice syrup at a huge markup. Everyone acts like trying to make money is evil. I'm sure that all but the top 5% of the people who work for those companies are people with families, who care what happens to them. Until we can switch to socialism, it has to be that way.
Anyway, I'm not going to bring my own organic ketchup and home-baked buns to an Indians game. And if I'm somewhere where we shouldn't be drinking the water, I'd now feel better off picking a soda with HFCS over a diet soda with artificial sweeteners, which I couldn't have said BEFORE I read this article. (...and ILB's insights.)
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
funny, I thought I'd read it all after the first ten or twelve, but Johnnyc, ya got an interesting point. Lotsa people that didn't know they should be asking that question are now asking that question: what's wrong with hfcs?
And the youtube mock-up was pretty good, too...
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
HCFS Contails mercury:
http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=59203968973&h=7n6QC&u=Dk3qX
It is Fructose. Baad: Fructose requires a different metabolic pathway than other carbohydrates because it basically skips glycolysis (normal carbohydrate metabolism). Because of this, fructose is an unregulated source of “acetyl CoA,” or the starting material for fatty acid synthesis. This, coupled with unstimulated leptin levels, is like opening the flood gates of fat deposition.
Linked to Diabetes:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070823094819.htm
Diabetes is a KILLER. People with HIV live longer.
HCFS is bad for the economy:
orn farmers get the majority of the funding given to farmers each year from Congress, mostly because they are horribly organized and hire lobbyists to bribe politicians into voting for pro-corn bills and spending. Imagine if all of that money was being spent giving children food education, or education in general. With all of the money going into these factory farms, very little of it is going to your local farmers and thus, very little of it is going into your local economy. Even if you buy it at your neighborhood grocery store, the dollar gets passed away from you, and toward people who don’t even need more money to begin with.
HCFS is bad for the environment: after cotton, the most pesticides in the US are used on corn. All of those pesticides get passed along to you through soda, candy, peanut butter, and even some crackers and salad dressings! Yum… Plus they get passed along as run-off into oceans and water systems that people use for drinking and bathing.
HCFS sucks, and the people that made those ads are evil asshats, like those Corporate Terrorists from Monsanto that sued the guy who put "No growth hormones!" on his milk cartons.
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
I disagree with a lot of you people in the comments section saying that the corn refiners association is protected by the first amendment in the same way a person is - but I do believe the content of these commercials is within their rights however misleading they try to be.
Fortunately, the corn refiners association basically screwed itself over by spending 30 million+ on their national campaign. It has been notoriously mocked on the internet and only brought the HFCS issue to to forefront of the news and our collective consciousness. The commercials seemed really fake and corporate - not exactly the way to convince people nowadays.
They have paved the way for new beverage companies to emerge and fill the consumer need for an alternative to high fructose corn syrup - I've seen many new websites dedicated to this issue, like stophfcs.com and vivi
as the issue gets more attention and more products emerge as alternatives, people will begin to shift towards healthier products.

That's so funny! Looks a little labor-intensive though.
Great Sandwiches and More at Murray's Cheese Shop
I work in the neighborhood and eat those sandwiches all the time. They're filling and delicious. That springy melted mozz-I always ask for my sandwich extra toasty so the cheese oozes and manages to slap my chin.
Love it!
Nobody mentioned the fantastic drinks. How about a local apple cider or thick Ronnybrook chocolate milk to wash it all down.
The lush life.
Great Sandwiches and More at Murray's Cheese Shop
I am certainly on board with the idea of a pickle in every sandwich. This holds true if the sandwich contains cheese or cured meats...you need the vinegary component to cut through the fatty richness of the cheese and meat.
Domestic prosciutto on the whole is an absolute trainwreck....UNLESS it comes from Herb Eckhouse at La Quercia in Norwalk, Iowa. I would happily welcome any of his cured pork products on any sandwich.
And people, people, people...use the salt! Please, please, please....food fear and salt fear in particular is for the "dead at 30 and buried at 70 crowd". Give me my Maldon or hold the brussels sprouts!
Great Sandwiches and More at Murray's Cheese Shop
I'm glad for this review, since the sarnies in there have always piqued my interest, though they never looked inviting enough to try. I think I'll stick with being a groupie around the cheese counter, for the Soumatrain, and their antipasti (marinated anchovies, and balsamic onions particularly yummy).

Blind Tiger Ale House right across the street also has really good sandwiches. And cask ale.

Great tip on Faicco's -- thanks. I've been really curious about their sandwiches but haven't braved the weekend lines yet.
Great Sandwiches and More at Murray's Cheese Shop
murray's sandwiches aren't all that which always surprises me. while i agree with ed that walking down bleecker st, one can't help but notice them through the window. they're just not that memorable. after eating a few, you'd expect more from a place like murray's.
go to faicco's a few doors down and get an italian special for ten bucks. you can eat half of it for lunch and the other half for dinner. it's insanely large. now that is a serious sandwich....artisanal my arse. we're going old school.
Best Pizza in Boston?
Emma's crust is all wrong, it is wafer thin and too much like a cracker for my liking. I have given up on finding a good slice of Italian pizza in Boston. I have found most of the establishments in the North End to be tourist traps, and the remainder outside of that area are Greek owned and better suited towards diner food than authentic pizza.
America's Heroes, Grinders, Subs, and More
When in Philly Sarcone's is a must for hoagies, Tony Luke's for steaks, roast pork, broccoli rabe...everything else...I'm a hungry man far from home
Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks
ALthough plain cheese is always appreciated, I make 2 special pizzas that my family enjoys. One is buffalo wing chicken with pepper jack cheese, and the other is smoked mozz with sweet sausage and roasted red peppers.
Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks
Feta cheese with tomatoes fresh out of the garden and kalamata olives sprinkled over a round of dough brushed with olive oil, minced garlic, greek oregano and a thin layer of mozzarella cheese is one of my favorite summer time pies. Even better when it's done on the grill.
Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks
smoked, thin-sliced ham and green olives...yum
And I make my own pizza at home
Besides plain cheese, the above mentioned are great for a change of pace
Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks
No pepperone, love it uncooked with cheese & crackers or antipasto, but not on pizza, overpowers everything else. Same thing with bacon. Good sausage meat or plain cheese for me. And don't even start with those cowpies from Chicago!
