Hot Apple Cider near Central Park?

Oh man, thanks so much you guys :)
Due to lack of judgement and eating 7 white castle burgers the night before, I wasn't feeling well enough to go to the City. However, I'm going tomorrow, and hopefully the weather will be okay enough ...

THANK YOU!!!!

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

A few weeks ago when I was eating at an all-you-can-eat brunch on my college campus, they gave me a giant pile of bacon along with my sponge-eggs, and I picked up a brownie with a ton of icing. My friend and I decided to scrape off some of the icing since the brownie tasted terrible, and try it with the bacon...

Least to say it was... "interesting" :O

Teen Foodies

Ah, I feel like I'm really lucky when it comes to my situation. I'm 17 and just stepped foot in college but back at home, many of my friends, including my current boyfriend, are very open about food. I wouldn't say passionate, but they're all willing to try new things and appreciate it :) Thank God I grew up with a father who had me try many different types of cuisine. It's the one thing both my father and I really have in common, and makes me the "foodie" that I am today. After all, not too many teenagers I know are willing to consume Sheeps Brain, or have an almost-fetish for cilantro since it's so damn good... :D

I'm at the combination Falafel & Pizza joint WHAT?!
I've got that chickpea smell
That tahini smell
I've got a lot of smells
'Cept pizza; it never sells!

For real though, I've never had a good Falafel in my life, so I have my hopes up for this place. I'm definitely gonna drop by the next time I'm in Brooklyn :)

What do foodies do?

I'm a High School senior right now.
I guess that makes me one of the young kids in here, but... dammit. I love food, and this place satisfies my food-lust ;) Also I'm doing my parents a favor and cooking my own food using some SE recipes so I don't have to depend on take out/easy mac when they're not home

Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults

Oh man, Doritos! I used to have a bag for lunch when I didn't want any school food, but now I know better. It tastes and smells terrible, not to mention you get that powder all over your fingers and under your nails... I cringe when I smell that Doritos scent. But alas, High School kids just LOVE doritos, so I'm surrounded by it for another year :(

The Most Disgusting School Lunches

My High School has pretty good food, surprisingly. We have burgers, sandwiches, and quesadillas cooked on the spot along with the normal hot lunches and even Sushi! The sushi was terrible though... Also we're allowed to order food to be delivered to the school during lunch, or go off campus and eat wherever. Thank you rich Long Island school!

Although now that I htink about it, I do remember finding a butter wrapper in my soup back in Middle school. That and chicken nuggets that bounced pretty well

Little Italy: Suggestions for teens w/ little cash?

Thank you, everybody!

Yeah, I'm really kind of disappointed that Little Italy turns out to be more tourist-y than I expected. I've always assumed it was like Chinatown/Flushing where you can get authentic Chinese food since there's a large Chinese population, except replace it with Italians w/ Italian food...

I do like some of these suggestions though! Most of them sound pretty good from what I've looked up, so I'll be keeping these suggestions handy for future trips to The City :)

Robb Walsh on Cheeburger Cheeburger's Onion Rings

Oh man, the onion rings at Cheeburger are amazing!

I'm surprised (but glad) to see that Cheeburger is a chain restaurant. I thought all this goodness was only available in the little town I live in.

i feel like such a wet blanket but I am tired beyond tired of the trendy "bacon" everything trend, Just as i feel you don't cover good caramel with other things, I don't think you cover bacon with other things. I'm sick of "Bacontinis" (YUCK! bacon beverages sound disgusting, but then, i'm not a martini drinker nor am I a cocktail type - it's yet another trend)
Why can't we just eat food. Bacon is great - if you like it. Plain ol' bacon. And mole? yeah theres a bit of chocolate in it, as are there nuts and seeds. We've made chicken mole and like it but we respect the traditional recipes.
Can we just go back to making food because we like it, not because it's the latest thing?
curmudge, curmudge...

Honestly, how hard is it to get a real pot, Alton?

If I'm going to watch how to make a stir fry in a wok made of bamboo leaves, I may as well be writing my manifesto at my wilderness compound.

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

I did a bacon ice cream a week ago and it came out very well. I think the caramelization on the bacon was about the thickness of a tootsie pop, though, so that might have been why it got such good reviews.

Bacon, chocolate -- two of my favourite things!
I think men will especially love it.
Will be testing it out very soon.

From Serious Eats

Video: Alton Brown Makes Oatmeal in a Coffee Pot

I love Alton, but if you're going to use packets of instant oats, then you might as well just heat up water and mix it in separate from the carafe. Cause either you have to take time to wash the carafe or you leave it dirty and piss off the cleaning staff.

@ardaliz - as an ex flight attendant I have never heard of any F/As washing their pantyhouse in coffee pots so that must be an isolated case. However I have had one too many nights and mornings of eating oatmeal in my hotel room instead of ordering the calorie-laiden, expensive room service, and never once thought of this! I would normally heat the water into the coffee pot then pour it into a mug and add the oatmeal. Alton is pretty clever!! But make sure you wash after use cause it become a crusty mess!

lesson learned: don't rig a coffee maker.

oh AB, you never cease to amaze me.
Genius technique from the one and only. didn't see this one.

However, I don't use coffee machines. Too many bad experiences and I just mind-as-well buy a cup in my thermos.

PS. the pantyhose argument put a smile on my face. I don't wear'em. I prefer to go bare. and I've heard about this too. Everyone knows how bad nylon can reak if you sweat. gross

From Serious Eats

Video: Alton Brown Makes Oatmeal in a Coffee Pot

This is irritatingly stupid. Oatmeal eaters in motels everywhere? The same oatmeal eaters that can't simply use the coffee pot to heat water, and then make the oatmeal in one of the paper cups provided by the hotel? Give me a break.

From Serious Eats

Soon, lovers of oatmeal will be pissing off hotel cleaning ladies from coast to coast.

From Serious Eats

That's awesome and all but I avoid hotel room coffee pots like the PLAGUE ever since hearing the rumor about how flight attendants use them to give their pantyhose a nice, hot wash.

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

I to, have made chocolate covered bacon for some time now. It is always a little scary for newbees to take that first bite, but when they do, the look on the face is divine. Also, I recently put some crumbled bacon in a traditional New York Cheesecake, maybe next time I'll try it with a chocolate cheesecake. Yum, again!

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

While I've only made mole once or twice, I find that adding a bit of cocoa powder to beef-based soups, stews, roasts, gravies can really help to balance out the sweetness of carrots, onions, etc. I don't use enough that the finished product tastes or smells chocolatey, but the bitterness in unsweetened cocoa is a nice alternative to an acid for balancing out a dish.

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

@wmasson- how long have you been dying to say that somewhere? as much as you SAY that, it won't come to fruition because there are "enchiladas covered in mole" and "chicken fajitas" and "cheese quesadillas" on menus all across the nation. semantics, my friend.

I really want to try this new trend!! I love savory foods.

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

I've made chocolate covered bacon for a party and it was an overwhelming hit. I'd say 90% of the people loved it. I used center cut bacon (less fat), cooked it on a rack over a tray so it wasn't greasy, and then dipped it in semisweet chocolate. Incredible!!!

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

Ok so Enchiladas means literally coated in chilis. Hence red enchiladas come from red chilis and green enchiladas come from green chilis. So when we say enchiladas, we are refereeing to tortillas stuffed with chicken covered in a chili sauce. (Chili as in the pepper not the meaty sauce popular all over the US). One would never really pour mole over enchiladas because the combination of sauces might not be so tastey. I think you were trying to refer to enmoladas, meaning covered in mole sauce. These are tortillas stuffed with chicken and covered in the dark mole.

saying an enchilada would be covered in mole is like asking for a chicken fajita. Fajita means skirt steak and there is no such thing as a chicken skirt steak. Or like saying cheese quesadillas, quesadilla implies cheese.

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

The only conceptualization of meat and chocolate I'm ok with (at this point in time) is mole sauce.

From Serious Eats

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

Michael's Genuine Food & Drink in Miami had a crispy beef cheek with a chocolate reduction sauce on the menu when they opened a couple years ago. It was a great dish.

From Serious Eats

A couple years ago I made some bacon chocolate chip cookies and they were so tasty that I think I ate the whole dozen in about two hours.

I recently turned twenty, but all throughout high school and into college I have understood your dilemma! My friends think I'm crazy because I can spend hours at the farmer's market instead of the mall, or because I am constantly forcing my recipes upon them to try. Don't worry, you're getting a head start on a long life of knowledge and appreciation!
