Date Night: Vatan

This is $31 per person, right? Because I'd love to go here with my boyfriend but $31/person is pretty expensive, especially for broke college students like me :(

From Recipes

Mark Bittman's Savory Oatmeal with Scallions and Soy Sauce

Made this today, since there's absolutely nothing to eat at my house. I added a fried egg on top, and stirred in some fried garlic. Best of all, it's great for any time of the day! Quick, easy, and great for a broke college student.

The Food Lab: Buffalo Fried Turkey

My birthday always falls on/around thanksgiving, so my family often celebrates it on thanksgiving. I'm sick and tired of crappy dry oven baked turkey. Buffalo fried turkey? Now THAT is something I'd have for a thanksgiving/birthday combo dinner, especially since one of my favorite foods is buffalo wings! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it... Great article Kenji!

Seeking a Few Great Contributors

It would be an absolute DREAM for me to join the writing team! Unfortunately, I lack sufficient writing/photography skills, and currently living on a college campus that requires a 2 hr LIRR ride to NYC doesn't really help either. Perhaps sometime in the future I can become a contributor :)

Beef Taco Skillet

Wow, everyone who is complaining about the Ads needs to get a hold of themselves. If you don't want these Advertisement Recipes, why don't you just NOT READ THEM? Is it that difficult to scroll a little extra and ignore them? If SE needs money to continue running, then let them do what they need to do to get some cash. Seriously, way to be elitist, just because a corporate sponsored recipe happened to "take over" and "taint" an insignificant fraction of SE content. It's Campbell's fault they chose to use a recipe so unappetizing...

Happy Birthday belated birthday, Kenji!

For a second when I saw that picture, it looked like the results of a prank involving ordering a dozen pizzas and delivering it to somebody without their consent. Good thing it was delicious pizza :)

Cook the Book: 'The Pot and How to Use It: The Mystery and Romance of the Rice Cooker'

Video: Japanese Street Vendor Making Takoyaki

I had takoyaki for the first time this summer at Osaka. I would do anything to have some good takoyaki again! Anyone know someplace that sells takoyaki in NYC?

Oh yeah, and there's this unbelievably cute takoyaki song I heard at some of the gift shops in Osaka:

Fun At An Elmhurst Strip Mall: Malaysian, Thai, Chinese, and More

Pho Bang is actually "Pho Banc", just the underlining on the sign makes the C looks like a G. Believe me, I thought it was Pho Bang for a good 7 years, until the internet informed me of the correct spelling.

That Black Jelly coconut drink looks so delicious :) I love drinks with gelatin cubes floating around in 'em!

'Abba-Zaba, You My Only Friend'

I love Abba-Zabas! I haven't had one in a few years, but now I might just go buy one the next time I find them. Usually I would freeze the bars and eat them. The taffy would be hard to bite into at first, but then it shatters into bits and pieces, just barely sticking onto the peanut butter filling. As I chewed the taffy, it just became a sticky, dentist's nightmare. I swear I felt cavities forming after each bite.

Raspados, Diablitos, Nieves y Más: Shaved Ice Roundup

Great article! I always look forward to your posts, Sara :)

My boyfriend lives near Corona and Jackson Heights, so it's great to explore all the different eateries in Queens and along the 7 train. Plus, since we're college kids, the fact that everything is cheap/fairly priced is a BIG plus. I can't wait to try some Raspados the next time I'm out there...

Where To Get Momos (Tibetan Dumplings) in Queens

Thanks for introducing me to Momo's, Sara!

I went to Bhim's cafe with my boyfriend yesterday afternoon, and we got a plate of chicken and a plate of beef. I'm a big fan of thin-skinned dumplings, since I've pretty much grown up on gyoza my grandmother makes. The momos were extremely satisfying, and the orange sauce was delicious! We're definitely coming back during the winter though, because we feel the curry heat and hot dumplings would be great when it's freezing out :)

Poll: Did You Take Home Ec in High School?

Home Economics (or what's now called "Family & Consumer Sciences") at my school was optional in high school, but mandatory in middle school. I decided to take cooking class again in my junior year of high school though (early 2008).

The class itself was pretty basic: Each class, we'd all follow a recipe of some dish that's related to a certain culture (egg rolls for Chinese, pupusas for Hispanic food, etc). Sometimes, each table would make a different dish and we'd have a little party and try the other classmates dishes. I feel terrible for saying this, considering I'm young and have much to learn about food, but about 90% of the class knew nothing about food. Most of the class was not willing to try out new ingredients, and would take out essential ingredients because they thought they looked/tasted/sounded gross. It would be that, or because they didn't like vegetables. Seriously, if you're not up to trying new things, why are you signing up for a cooking class called "food & culture"? It didn't help that I was stuck in a group full of jerkoffs who would tease me for being extremely shy.

I guess that's what I got for taking what was considered a "slacker" class in my school.

Poll: How Do You Eat String Cheese?

You biters are no fun. When I see somebody bite string cheese instead of string it, it's like as if I just witnessed a person chomp off the head of a squirrel or something. Pure horror

What's the Weirdest Sandwich You Make?

I wish I had a crazy sandwich I loved...
I guess the sandwich I made that was most "out there" was a peanut butter & nutella sandwich w/ wheat bread (not toasted. I don't have a toaster in my dorm) and a layer of special K red berries in the middle. mmm, textural contrast.

Until then, I'm waiting until I'm either inebriated or lose my sanity once college stress beats down on me. Maybe then I'll make some deliciously strange sandwiches

Poll: Do You Take Photos of Your Food Before Eating?

I would always tell myself to take a picture of what I eat, but most of the time I forget because I'm starving! Also, my cell phone camera is terrible and I have pretty poor skills with my DSLR (I should force my bf to teach me), so I don't take a picture that often. It's a shame because I've made great looking food before but photo-documenting it slips my mind :(

Grocery Self-Checkout Lanes: Way or No Way?

Self checkout all the way, though, I wish people who don't know how to use it would do us self checkout-savvy customers a big favor and NOT use it. I get extremely impatient when I'm next in line and the person in front of me is taking years to get whatever they want. I should help the people in front of me though, since the workers at my local supermarket don't pay attention to the self checkout at all when they're on shift for it. Damn my extreme shyness!

What's The Worst Restaurant Name You've Ever Heard?

Pukk.

My friends and I snickered and make really immature jokes when we passed by it (we were in high school at the time). We ended up eating there that night, and my ex's napkin caught on fire. Maybe that was Karma's way of telling us not to make fun of restaurant names

Oh man, thanks so much you guys :)

The Meat and Chocolate Trend

A few weeks ago when I was eating at an all-you-can-eat brunch on my college campus, they gave me a giant pile of bacon along with my sponge-eggs, and I picked up a brownie with a ton of icing. My friend and I decided to scrape off some of the icing since the brownie tasted terrible, and try it with the bacon...

Least to say it was... "interesting" :O

Teen Foodies

Ah, I feel like I'm really lucky when it comes to my situation. I'm 17 and just stepped foot in college but back at home, many of my friends, including my current boyfriend, are very open about food. I wouldn't say passionate, but they're all willing to try new things and appreciate it :) Thank God I grew up with a father who had me try many different types of cuisine. It's the one thing both my father and I really have in common, and makes me the "foodie" that I am today. After all, not too many teenagers I know are willing to consume Sheeps Brain, or have an almost-fetish for cilantro since it's so damn good... :D
