The Absinthe Backlash Begins
Well you should try Le Tourment Vert its supposed to be the most authentic absinthe with the green color and everything. My favorite part is using the spoon and sugar cube! Haha
I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?
I like milk chocolate as well. Dark chocolate just has a weird taste to me. I am mildly addicted to chocolate brownies, snickers and reeses, that's about as far as I go. LOL!

Dinner and a Show, Movie and Popcorn: What Else?
Aw man you guys are quite romantic. I'm taking notes for whenever my dating/relationship era comes around again.
Weird Trendy Food Lighting
I think lighting can have alot to do with the attractiveness of the entree. I have to see a picture but I've gone to alot of restaurants that use the fluorescent bulbs. Gyenari in LA uses yellow lighting.
What's a Half-Smoke?
I have to see this half-smoke chaser because I'm still slightly confused about this unique D.C. style.
Dinner Tonight: Ricotta Pancakes with Lemon Curd

Mixed Review: Krusteaz Fat-Free Wild Blueberry Supreme Muffin Mix
I've had fat-free muffins before and they tasted like they were missing some magic ingredient...I don't know what but something was missing.
Work Potluck Suggestions?
your own specialized veggie tray is good, chips and a homemade dip, or a really good salad with various vegetables topped on there.
Cooking without onions or garlic
Yeah that is absolutely hard. I grill onions to go with almost all my meats...this is a hard one. I am stumped!
Kansas City Waiter Gets $1,100 Tip (on an $80 Check)
Could I have been in his shoes at the exact moment? PLEASE!!!! I'm happy for him...tuition bills and taking care of a child are the most expensive opportunities ever!
Trip to Memphis, Need Ideas
The very first thing you need to do is run to a grocery store and buy some Blue Bell homemade Ice Cream!!! All the flavors are wonderful but my favorites are Vanilla and Butter Pecan. This brand is only stocked in stores in the South...NOT the midwest the north, the east or the west.
Red Velvet Cupcake
Hmmm Hmmm good! I know they are really good if they are coming from a bakery in my hometown - Chicago!
White Chocolate Covered Pretzels
I love white chocolate covered pretzels!!! I usually get the pack of the minipretzels that they have in stock at grocery stores.
You learn something new every day....
Wow! I should read this post everyday because you will learn so much!
Asian Markets Attract Budget-Minded Chefs
I have never known of any asian grocery store chains. this one is remarkable. Where is it located?
Do you eat your vegetables?
I eat veggie tables all the time!!! I love vegetables especially those belonging to the green family. I would eat with every meal if I could but I consume them mostly with dinner whenever I cook dinner.
Butternut Squash Lasagne with Fresh Sage & Thyme
What's the difference between butternut squash and yellow squash? Is one better than the other? I'm intrigued.
I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?
A couple times a year after a dinner party, I have to go online and find the other chocolate haters. I try to be conveniently be away from the table when dessert (invariably chocolate) is served. Yet, they hunt me down and try to force it on me. Finally, I relent. "Really, I'll pass. I don't like chocolate." "YOU DON'T LIKE CHOCOLATE?!" And then everyone starts talking about chocolate! For me, it's like they are talking about eating slugs. I despise chocolate. I find myself getting more and more sick to my stomach. It IS curious to me that there are people (lots of them) who love chocolate, and sometimes I kind of wish I could have that orgasmic chocolate experience that people talk about. But then the chocolate..slugs ..chocolate...slugs...bleech part of my brain takes over and I nix that wish.
I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?
I don't hate chocolate, but neither do I love or crave it. Not much of a sweet tooth, I guess.
Someone told me once that people either have a salt or sweet preference that was inherently genetic. I don't know if that is true, but I'd definitely hit the salty stuff before the sweet stuff. Whatever.
I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?
I'll only eat dark chocolate. I like to think its a texture thing as well as having a flavor and aroma as complex and interesting as coffee or wine.
And we know how people can love their coffee or wine.
I hate milk chocolate anything.
I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?
Oh I am with you on this! I cannot stand chocolate! The smell makes me want to retch, I think it smells like dirty socks. The taste is an abomination! Trust me if I ever find a Genie to grant me wishes, I'm totally asking him to eradicate the public nuisance that is chocolate.
I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?
I have never liked chocolate, don't crave it, never think about it, and always steer clear of it if offered for dessert. Eating or drinking anything with chocolate in it never enters my thought process. I don't understand people who like it. I guess I'm un-American because I can't stand
pumpkin pie, apple pie, licorice, root beer, or liver. Chocolate is at the top of that list however. We all have likes and dislikes and shouldn't be judged by what we don't like. I have a friend who detests spaghetti and mashed potatoes. I don't judge her for it. That's what makes us unique as individuals. Give me a dessert with lemon, strawberries or a lot of vanilla, and I'm in seventh heaven!
The Absinthe Backlash Begins
Unbelievable! Finally an article with a list of absinthe that is actually good brands. Nouvelle Orleans, Pacifique, La Clandestine and Mansinthe are some of my favorites! If anyone is interested, there is also a nice list of reviews at Absinthe-Review.com
Serious Eats City Guide: Los Angeles
i might want to check that gyenari place out.

Some of the best Thai food I've had is found at Suriya's, where service is always fast, and food always very delicious. I highly recommend the spicy eggplant. :)
The Absinthe Backlash Begins
Paul, as you know, Joana attended your session at Tales of the Cocktail last year and found it both informative and engaging. Since then I've tried about 10 different absinthes and find Marteau among the best -in-class and I'm anxious to get my hands on Clandestine and Pacifique should they make their way to anywhere near here.
The backlash hasn't started here in any form in OK because, well, there's a very low awareness of what absinthe is and how it can be used so please continue to share your expertise and knowledge on the subject and evangelizing on what makes a proper absinthe and how it should be used.
As for the marketing side, I couldn't agree more. Steve Raye and BAT handle online writers and bloggers with respect and give the work that goes into writing such as yours its due. Others, however, see fit to use deceptive and degrading tactics to promote their brands. I hope everyone will consider the quality of such a brand before grabbing it off the shelf if they need to resort to such measures. "authentic absinthe" indeed...

KBBQ is always bomb. How's the galbi? I can eat a platter of that thing for everyday the rest of my life.
Serious Eats City Guide: Los Angeles
I actually just went to Gyenari the other day. The happy hour was great! $2 Hite beers and the cocktails are very good!
What's a Half-Smoke?
Foodlexi: Sure, go ahead and link away.
Savannah, GA
Hi, Everyone.
I'm back from Savannah, and there was a lot of good eating.
Ended up not going to Lady & Sons: the lines were too long, and it smelled too much like butter.
I have a bunch of recaps on where I ate with photos on my blog: http://mangotomato.blogspot.com/
Asian Markets Attract Budget-Minded Chefs
I'm born in the USA but shop mostly at markets where most of the other customers speak English as a second language. Han Au Reum (the former name of H-Mart, actually a branch of a major Korean chain) has long been a favorite (and its number 11--cham pong, a seafood noodle soup with soothing side of kim chi chases away winter viruses quite nicely). Now, another Asian market's a little nearer, but likewise has great quality (and turnover) of produce and fish especially, if not the watch-your-lunch-cook counter. And there are a couple of small local chains (Magruders and El Grande come to mind) with higher quality and cheaper produce and meats than the biggies.
When I visit my dad in the Chicago suburbs, I shop mostly in the small ethnic chains (mostly run by Greeks but catering to Poles, Russians and similar Slavs--my ethnic background) for the highest quality produce and most interesting pickles and deli meats. H-Mart also has a branch (converted from a closed Dominicks/Safeway). I'll also occasionally stop by a Filipiino market. In Philadelphia, it's the Italian market, natch. Funny thing, that's the highest proportion of native English speakers of all the places I shop, though now Spanish is as commonly heard as Trader Joes or Whole foods bags are seen.
The ethnic markets are so much fun to see and try new foods! Sad that our American foodstuffs are processed to death, and it takes our newest neighbors to lead the way back to real food!
Please Read: Serious Efforts
A further request for folks posting Serious Efforts threads (which I think have been great threads so far!): please post your recipe/technique when you make your initial post. If everyone knows where you're starting from, you may well get more specific advice/information. Thanks!
Dinner Tonight: Ricotta Pancakes with Lemon Curd
Made the batter for my daughter and SIL, she cooked them at home...loved them. They ate the pancakes with honey & strawberry jam. I didn't make the lemon curd--too many eggs... they enjoyed anyway.
Savannah, GA
I'm probably too late, here, but I was going to join the chorus saying ""Wilkes," and add a recommendation that you try Despositos, which I just read about here: http://www.oneforthetable.com/oftt/restaurants/savannah-ga-3.html. Both are very on on my list for our March trip southward.
Dinner Tonight: Ricotta Pancakes with Lemon Curd
Delicious pancake recipe, with the best tangy ricotta flavor I've had yet, but I was disappointed they weren't fluffier with all those egg whites. Maybe I overworked the batter, but these weren't even half as thick as my usual buttermilk pancakes. the lemon curd was delicious though, and great on cold leftover pancakes.
What's a Half-Smoke?
Erin,
Would you mind if I link to this article from whatamieating.com? I like including items with a particular story attached to them and this is a good one, though I rather agree with LunaPierCook about the picture. I prefer Kaszeta's, slightly!! Which reminds me, could I link to your article too Kaszeta?
What's a Half-Smoke?
I'm glad that President Obama doesn't eat half-smokes. He's a healthy, conscientious eater who wants to reach an advanced old age in good health. I hope he'll turn the White House Lawn into a vegetable garden and fruit orchard. We have to stop encouraging obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Let's promote fresh, natural, flavorful natural foods.
What's a Half-Smoke?
When Stationed at Andrews Air Force Base 1961 to 1964 I consumed many half smokes! I was introduced to them by a seargent during a break in the day. I probably was the only Jewish half smoked fan in those days.
Keep eating them they didnt hurt me at all! Burp!
What's a Half-Smoke?
Looks and sounds fantastic - wish we had them in So Cal! DROOL!!!
Do you eat your vegetables?
I also crave veggies! Funny thing, I was craving roasted brussel sprouts the other day and had to have them..No one believes me when I tell them they taste soooo goooood when they're prepared this way!! Love it.....
