Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

my first cookbook was my mom's orange 1970 betty crocker book. the pages were stained and falling out, but that book taught me how to cook - i even remember making cream puffs, an impressive feast for a 15 year old at the time.

New Jersey Dispatch: Santillo’s Brick Oven Pizza

I too grew up in Elizabeth and a highlight was getting a Sicilian pie from Santillo's on the weekend. Now I live quite far and haven't made the trip up there in years. I'm thinking it's time to get back up there. Thanks for the reminder.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 82: Peanut Butter Portion Control

oh, ed, i can relate. oh the combinations i've made with peanut butter as a main ingredient. probably the one that grosses people out the most is whipping it with low fat cool whip and topping with chocolate chips or hershey syrup.

i have to hide my jar of peanut butter or i can down several tablespoons straight up at one time. i've even been able to transition to low-fat peanut butter but still that is dangerous stuff around me.

ahh DiCosmo's...I grew up down the street from this place and still try to get back when I can. Pineapple was always my favorite.

Cook the Book: 'The Barcelona Cookbook'

There is a tiny little tapas place in Harrisburg, PA with live music above an Italian restaurant, Suba. The drinks were fantastic, the music was rockin', the atmosphere was comy, and the food was amazing - Manchengo cheese, olives, fried artichoke, grilled bread with tomatoes and garlic, piquillo stuffed pepper. But the standout was the Tacos. El Ranchero - slow cooked beef with horseradish and chive sauce. After finishing one serving, we ordered another. They were that. damn. good.

Cook the Book: 'Modern Spice'

I am fascinated with classic French cooking but alas I am just not that good of a cook to really grasp it. I have Mastering the Art of French Cooking but a lot of the recipes appear daunting to me. I've tried a few, simple ones, but I'd really like to dive into one of the more difficult ones these days, say the Cassoulet that takes three days...

How to Introduce Craft Beers to New Beer Drinkers

love love love the peache and raspberry lambic from lindeman's. but i'm not a serious beer drinker so it could be why. tastes like a cross between beer and champagne to me. sounds oddly gross, but i like it.

call me crazy but i love the burgers at Peco's Bill's at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. It might be the "fixin's bar" that wins me over though....

What Foods Would You Fight For?

I feel like I fight fairly often for sushi. Seems odd considering how mainstream it is. But in my family and among many of my friends, they are completely skeeved by sushi. "Ugh, how can you eat that? It's raw..."

Yes, it's raw and it's delicious. I try to ween some people into trying cooked sushi, i.e. California Roll, Tempura Rolls. But yet, they still cannot get over me eating raw fish. I would eat it every day if it wasn't so expensive!

Cook the Book: 'Endangered Recipes' by Lari Robling

my fav childhood memory regarding food centers around anything my grandmother let me get involved in making. but the memory that stands out the most is distinctly remembering making homemade gnocchi with my grandmother many times...rolling out the dough, cutting it into small pieces and then using our thumbs to make the indent....

Dining at Disney World

Hey there,
It depends on your budget and tastes but WDW has a plethora of dining available, most of which is really good (the bad ones I won't mention).

For upscale dining, I suggest Victoria's and Albert's (esp. the Chef's Table) at the Grand Floridian, California Grill at the top of the Contemporary, Artist's Point in Wilderness Lodge or Jiko in Animal Kingdom Lodge.

In the parks, some of my favorite sit-down meals include Le Cellier in Canada in Epcot and Marrakesh in Morroco in Epcot.

Elsewhere, Spoodles on the Boardwalk and Raglan Road on Pleasure Island.

I have some Disney dining reviews on my blog, The Average Cook as well (http://foodiedani.wordpress.com)

Good luck!

Classic Cookbooks: Elizabeth David's Ratatouille

I made Julia Child's recipe twice over the last few weeks and while it is wonderful, it's as you say, fussy. Extremely time consuming, cooking the eggplant separately, then the zucchini, then the onions and tomatoes, etc. etc.

Served: My Plea To Tip Kindly

While waitressing my way through college, the worst situation I ever encountered while I had a short (6 weeks) stint at Friendly's. I was still a "trainee" server but the manager thought it would be good to put me on a table of oh, 12 people. They had me running around like a chicken with it's head cut off and were extremely rude to me. They also ordered about six waffles. I explained to them that there would be a delay with the waffles as we only could make two at a time and they each took several minutes. They wanted them anyway but then complained about the timing. My tip? ZERO. And to add insult to injury, my manager let them belittle and berate me as they left while he said nothing. Needless to say, I quite shortly thereafter.

I love my mom's pecan pie which she only makes for Thanksgiving. Gooey, super sweet, with cruncy pecans, just a sliver is all I can handle before going into sugar-overload.

it's actually kind of sad. My freshman year of college I worked at the corporate HQ of Fanny Farmer candy shops and for our Xmas bonus we all got a copy of the new Fanny Farmer cookbook ..... so my first cookbook was the Fanny Farmer cookbook.

My first cookbook was one from our church. I know, not top quality. I rarely turn to cookbooks as a new cook because of the vast information on the internet. I would enjoy having a few cookbooks in my collection, though.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My Mother in Law got me a 5 ingredient cookbook that had horrible recipes which basically combined 5 canned foods into one dish meals. Revolting.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

The first cookbook that I ever received was a book of photocopied recipes my grandfather made for me of all the traditional Italian recipes that my great grandma used to make for her family. There are some wonderful recipes in there too. From homemade tortellini, to antipasto that has to sit jarred for a year before you can eat it (to let the flavors meld).

The sad bit is that I rarely use it because so many of the recipes are so labor intensive and large.

My first cookbook was the Company's Coming Kids Cooking cookbook - Company's Coming is really big where I'm from (Alberta, Canada), but even when I venture to another province, no one's heard of it! I don't think I made too much from it... there was a pretty good fudgesicle recipe though :)

There was pretty much only one cookbook in the house growing up in my Chinese household (which my mother never cracked open) and it was the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. The first recipe I ever made was probably tuna casserole one Thanksgiving when my sisters and I decided to do as the Americans do and add to our standard hot pot feast. How things have changed!

Unfortunately, I can not remember the name of the Cook Book Given. But I do know who gave it to me. My Aunt Sandra gave me the cook book for my Baby shower 24 years ago. She wished me a long and happy life. Aunt Sandra died 4 years ago..and although I cannot find the cookbook through many moves I do treasure the sentiment
