Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

Don't recall the name but my mother collected these various small cookbooks , each dedicated to a specific food catagory ..... veggies , stews , meats , special dinners etc. Then they were all bound together in this HUGE 3 -ring binder .....and it made for a 10 lb. cookbook . I was enamored of the thing and she gave it to me when I married . Either that ...or she couldn't lift it anymore .

Worst disaster was my mother's .......As a new bride she decided to make a meat & veggie pie for dinner . She made a perfect crust , savory sauce and fresh veggies . It looked and smelled wonderful ......till Dad took a bite . NO MEAT ! The meat was still in the fridge ....uncooked . Like all new brides would .....she ran into the bedroom crying .

Cook the Book: 'Tacos'

One night , after getting some tacos from TACO BELL ( I KNOW ...I KNOW ) , I plunked myself down in front of the " boob tube " to enjoy my snack . While watching my program a " news flash " interupted with this .............COCAINE FOUND IN TACOS AT LOCAL TACO BELL ! With my mouth full of possible illicit drugs , I dug thru the rest of my food looking for white powder . With none found , and hating waste ( apparently more than an OD ) , I finished the rest of my food . Looking back ........KINDA STUPID !

My mother's home-made peanut butter muffins . They were HUGE ! Plus the aroma hit you in the face as soon as you opened the door . Sometimes , instead of a spagetti sauce on my pasta , I'll make a sauce using a beef broth and some crushed tomatoes . It tastes meaty and lightly tomatoey and just plain good .

Cook the Book: 'Ten'

When my mother was expecting , many years ago , she had a wicked craving for chow mein . Not so bad .... except it was 3:00 am. .... and there was a snow storm raging outside . Well , she woke my father and told him that she HAD to have some chow mein . After screaming about the time and the weather ....he got out of bed , dressed and went off on his quest . Amazingly , an hour later , he was back with a small order of chow mein . Mom took one forkfull ....ate it with GREAT relish ....and declared she was FULL ! You can imagine the resulting conversation . My Dad told this story till the end of his days .....and we " kids " loved it .

I have made my great grandmother's carrot and zucchini o-shaped loaf for my in-laws for the past three years. I surround the loaf with and put in the middle tons of roasted broccoli - definitely a crowd pleaser, as it goes fantastic with the turkey and mashed potatoes and all the other classic sides!
