Your take on asparagus
Oops I meant like bananamonkey makes it. Jerzees sounds good too. I obviously can't talk to hubby and write at the same time.
Your take on asparagus
Oh please don't waste fresh asparagus by boiling it! I made it this way for years until my sister taught me the way Jerzee makes hers. Plus we shave a little reggiano on top when it's almost finished. Oh my.. sooo good.
Chick-fil-A
Lorenzo... What the shit?. You staying away from Chick-Fil-A because they are closed on Sundays (oh no...they are sending messages!!!! shudder!!!) is as STUPID as Christians staying away from every friggin business that is NOT closed on Sundays. Are you talking from the heart or from a guilty conscience? And yes, this is a message I'm trying to send.

Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
I would suggest a buffet of pain killers and as Pavlov said, beer. All of the food suggestions sounded good, but for whatever horrible reason, we never crave "hard" food until we can't have it. So, with that being said, you might as well get into a comfy woozy zone, drop a lot of weight rapidly, and wait til you can enjoy the calories. I need to make a disclaimer... " I am not a doctor". 'Cause I know that you would never have guessed that. I hope you get better quickly!

Food jokes and parody: 5th grade boys seem to excel at this
Oh Pooch! Flippin' hysterical. I seriously peed my pants. Gotta get that checked...
Coat Check Tipping in the Recession
@Norman- That's hysterical!
As spring approaches, what do you crave?
@dhorst- I'll be happy to send you what we have :) Our local "produce stand guy" has been making trips down to Immoklee -spelling? (Florida), and getting some tiny squash and tomatoes to die for. I really didn't think that it was time for this stuff even this far south, but they are wonderful! Oh yeah, sweet corn too. Love love love this time of year!
Coat Check Tipping in the Recession
Unless you HAVE to eat at a restaurant for work, because you are traveling, or some other reason beyond your control, it is a treat and not a necessity. With this being said, when it is out of necessity and I'm on a tight budget, I don't feel guilty for cutting corners if I have no other choice. However, if I'm planning to dine out for the sheer enjoyment of a restaurant, I plan to spend the money necessary to assauge my guilt. I know that may be crazy, but if I have the money to splurge on a treat like dining out, I don't want the meal ruined by feelings of guilt that two dollars could have fixed... see what I mean? That's just me though.
As spring approaches, what do you crave?
I'm not one to brag or to make anyone jealous (ha!), but I have already eaten a BOAT LOAD of fresh strawberries this weekend. I live just a couple of hours from Plant City (Florida), and they are the strawberry capital here... One of the perks of living in hot humid Flo-rida!
It ain't as good as my mama's!
Her fried potatoes and onions. And her potatoes au gratin.
What did you end up eating or serving for the Super Bowl?
Chicken salad, egg salad, croissants, assorted rolls, chicken fingers, fruit, brownies, pierogies, chicken-rice-veggie casserole, mexican cheese dip, chips. Ohhh my...soooo good. Oh yeah, the game was good too :)
Food for 3 in the AM.
The awful waffle.. oops! I mean the Waffle House.
How old were you when you first started cooking?
I was 18, and just married when I first cooked a meal. Mom would not allow me in the kitchen, and she did not have the patience to teach me how to make anything. I know that I have made her sound like a horrid person, she really isn't. She was just very (over)protective of the cleanliness in our home. We weren't allowed to clean or do laundry either! Was a dream growing up, but soon found out it was a curse. I have to really watch myself with my daughter, because I find myself wanting to do the same thing....
Bodily Functions at Serious Eats
Oh come on guys! All of this going back and forth at each other is quite unsettling. In fact, now I have a case of the greasy, runny, yellowish-green splats. Sorry... couldn't refuse. Actually, no I'm not sorry or I would have just backspaced this whole thing. And I think I am o.k. with saying all of this because I am actually talking on target with the title.
Can We Retire the Word 'Toothsome' Already?
Oops. I have used the word yummy several times here. Cut me a break though- I work with small children:) The only word I'm sick of is "amazing". Ever watch "The Bachelor"? Everything is "amazing" there. Just for crap and giggles, watch it next week and see how many amazings you hear. And, by the way, what other word could you use to describe seasonal or local? "I use the squash that Farmer Joe raised only 6 miles from my house, after all, squash is terribly popular in June" ??? Ha-Ha! Just kiddin', I'm just being a witch.
Recipe Request: Panini and Me
@unarata- That sounds soooo good. I may just make one tomorrow for lunch. Or maybe a midnight snack.... an appetizer for dinner tonight...
Favorite Food from the '90s?
Buffy- I am bummed. Dippin Dots were only popular for a minute? That sucks, 'cause I would like to think that I gave up my first born for something that was popular for more than a measly minute. O.K, I didn't give her up, but the strawberry dots are my downfall. Even now. Thanks for the info, now I will be Dippin Dot closet eater.
Favorite Food from the '90s?
Oh man! I remember Zima now! Thank you, thank you for that memory. When were the gyro's popular? I think the 80's actually.... Now there are some good years! Remember when the rumor was started everywhere that a kid ate pop rocks and drank Coke and his guts exploded? Or was that a rumor only in my hick town? Oh God, it was a rumor right?AAARGH! My brain hurts... Gotta go get some sleep.
Be Honest: Are You a Snob?
I am not a snob in any way, form or fashion. I do have preferences though, and they are not always one of the highest quality. For example, I bought a pricey blue cheese at Fresh Market, but found a dirt cheap brand at Publix that I like much better. To me, snob sounds ugly. It sounds like everyone here is just choosy about their selection of food, and not at all nasty with it. To me, and this is just my overworked opinion, snob means that we would have a "greater than thou" opinion. That is not at all the impression that I get from any of you. I have learned so much from many of you about good quality items that I had never tried. Once tried, I loved so many of them. Surely that didn't turn me into a snob either? I mean after all, I will still eat *gasp* Kraft mac & cheese mixed in with canned corn, and be in bliss. And, with the economy in such a slump, who knows what we may be forced into eating. I have on occasion made fun of the "cheese food-dip like substance" in a jar, made for dipping tortilla chips in. My dear best friend can, and does eat the crap with a spoon. I tell her it's "trashy people" food. She then reminds me that the first place she ever tasted it was at my house. I digress.
The Hotdog(Sausage): Why so Good?
I love these italian sausages with peppers and onions that you get from Fannie Farkles in downtown Gatlinburg. I could absolutely live on these things for the nine days that we vacation in that area. They have them cooking on a grill inside of this gameroom... they have a window behind the grill that opens up facing the sidewalk, so all you can smell up and down the strip is sausage dogs. It is WAY not fancy dining, SO messy, but oh so unbelievably delicious.
If you had to choose just three vegetables...
I would have to keep potatoes, asparagus, and squash.
Ok, I will follow with..how do you say Jalapeno
My mother says salsa like " sow sa". Absolutely drives me nuts! My entire fambly.. oops! that's family, says sherbert, not sherbet. Then they are ballsy enough to laugh at me for pronouncing it correctly. They even say " no, no, listen to me, this is how you say it.. say sher then bert.. got it?". My friend's hubby went to Taco Bell and ordered, I'm not kidding, "some of them thar cheeken fa Ji tees". She wanted to crawl under the table. Wonder why?
What makes a GREAT hamburger?
ChelleyD01- Thank you for the info. Now that I look at it, I feel like a real dumb a**. Strike this from my record, although it is by far not the dumbest question I have ever asked :)
what's your favorite "get back on track" food?
Coffee in the morning, fruit and salad for lunch and dinner. Do this for about four or five days and then I'm pretty well set back on track ; )
Hurricane Preparedness
*bumping for the new season*
No_Pam, having grown up on the coast of Florida I relate completely to your post. However, now I live in the center of the state, and while wind damage and minor flooding occur, our most serious threat is sanitation and healthy eating in the powerless days after.
I like the original intent of this thread, but do wonder: what are the basic food items you stock up on, and what methods of cooking do you use should you loose power for a week or so?
While the food in the freezer is still good, I use my grill a lot. I'll cook up as much meat as will fit on the grate as I can then put what we don't eat as a meal right then in to zipper bags, and put the portioned cooked meat in the ice chests to incorporate into meals. For the meals themselves I like to prepare dutch oven recipes like we use when camping. Doing so even enables us to make fresh bread and dessert for variety.
It sounds like a lot of work, and it is. But when the power is out, there really is very little else to do.
Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
i just got all four wisdom teeth taken out yesterday and i made a zucchini casserole without the cracker crust for supper last night. it was really good and surprisingly easy to eat without that gross mushy taste.. just make sure you bowl the squash/zucchini nice and soft don't over cook it in the oven. the more cheese, the better!
tonight for dinner i'm planning on making either hamburger pie (hamburger, mashed potatoes, green beans, etc.) with really finely ground hamburger or a bubble up pizza, which is a pizza made with soft thick bread and tons of cheese. if either one doesn't work i'll let you know, but so far i'm definately not stuck with soup and jello and the only thing that's been painful to eat was mint chocolate chip ice cream. you just gotta do a little research. : ]
get better soon everybody!

Cheap Meals!
Since pasta and beans are so cheap try combining them. In a tablespoon of olive oil slightly cook about 3 cloves of garlic. Add one or two cans of pinto beans and chopped up broccoli and serve over a pound of short pasta (penne or rigatoni). As always puts some parmesean cheese on top. $4 total
Cook about 4 cloves of garlic and 2 or 3 whole pepperoncini (probably about 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes) in a half cup of olive oil, serve over pasta. $3 total
1 Onion cooked in half a stick of butter, add a can or 2 of tuna and serve over pasta. $5 total
3 cans of tomatoes (15 ounces each) cooked with either garlic or onions (not both), basil, salt, pepper, a dash of red wine vinegar and a tablespoon of sugar. $4 total
Throw some Edam or Gouda cheese in with pasta and nothing else. $5 total
Coat Check Tipping in the Recession
I took a "coat check girl" job last night in New York at one of the steak houses because I am in need of some extra cash. Going from an office job to behind the scenes at a restaurant was a complete eye-opener. I am a very thrifty person and I never check my coat, always hanging it on the chair behind me, unless I am attending an event where everyone checks their coat - and even then I can't recall even tipping one dollar, although I probably have, because I never paid any attention to the coat check people. I can tell you that it is a tough job. I worked very hard to keep the coat room organized and took special care of people's things. I tried to return their belongings as quickly as I could when they returned with their tags. It was pouring rain last night, so people had a lot of bags and wet umbrellas that they wanted to store. It was amazing to me how many people checked two umbrellas and a heavy attache in one bunch, and tipped $1. One group checked 10 huge umbrellas together in one group, then tipped $5, which was at least better than nothing. I am sad to say that most of the women, if they were alone or with other women, did not even tip me $1. The men were by far the most generous tippers, some tipping $5 and one fellow $10. Even thinking about the $10 tip makes me appreciate this guy even more, because he must have a better understanding of what it means to be a coat check person than I did before I took this job. I can tell you that every dollar is greatly appreciated. I worked solely for tips, and the restaurant took 20%.
Coat Check Tipping in the Recession
I have worked coat check for five seasons and it does upset me when a number of people do not check their coats but what is worst is checking your coat and not tipping. The coat check staff hustles for those tips and we deserve to be treated as generously as the wait staff. I work coat check because I need that extra money to survive. Giving up my evenings to hustle for a job is upseting when the night is not lucrative. I get home about 1 or 2 in the morning and must wake up at 6:30 to go to my full time job. So for those who tip I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Perhaps someday I will get out of my own economic crisis that I have been dealing with for the past 13 years. Coat check staff get paid a very small hourly wage, just like a server.
Paula Deen Is Trying To Kill Us
Its real and its here... (as disgusting as it is)
Paula's Fried Butter Balls
2 sticks butter
2 ounces cream cheese
Salt and pepper
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg, beaten
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
Peanut oil, for frying
Cream the butter, cream cheese, salt and pepper together with an electric mixer until smooth. Using a very small ice cream scoop, or melon baller, form 1-inch balls of butter mixture and arrange them on a parchment or waxed paper lined sheet pan. Freeze until solid. Coat the frozen balls in flour, egg, and then bread crumbs and freeze again until solid.
When ready to fry, preheat oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.
Fry balls for 10 to 15 seconds until just light golden. Drain on paper towels before serving.
Full recipe is here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/paulas-fried-butter-balls-recipe/index.html
Whats the difference between this recipe and deep fried mozarella or deep frying whole turkeys or chickens (before baking) or even Krispy Kremes which are deep fried TWICE?? All of which I cannot stomach.
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
It's pop. Done. Unless it's a brand name.
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
Growing up in northern NY (not up state) it was soft drinks. Here in central NY ('cuse) it's soda.
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
@cybercita--that made me laugh out loud!
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
I lived in southern california my whole life and always referred to it as soda but after moving to Ohio ant age 23 I am getting sucked into calling it pop...
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
Soda. The stuff I don't drink.
Coke is only for Coca Cola and Cocaine.
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
i come from berkeley, where we called coca cola "the black waters of imperialism."
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
pop. and im curious... i live in the pittsburgh area, where we say pop, and pepsi has billboards every where just saying "pop". Where those of yousay soda, do they have "soda" billboards? every time i see one i wonder...
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
I live in california. Have lived here nearly all my life, and have always refered to it as coke no matter what I am drinking. I live in Riverside, CA but have also lived in San Diego, CA growing up and we called it the same in both places. Not sure who calls it soda sounds strange. But my cousins come down from Virginia and they call it Pop. Thought they were talking about those little pop rock candies the first time they asked for a pop. lol.

Cheap Meals!
as a college student myself, I found all of this extremely helpeful and thanks to all of you!!
from one poor student to another, or to a single mom, or someone just trying to cut costs, I leared A LOT of tricks from my mom.
*things that you can cook in one pan without dirtying too many dishes usually mean its something cheap.
a personal favorite of mine is a dish where you cook those spiral pastas, i believe they are rotini? in a large pot, drain and set aside. then brown some sausage with onions in the same pot, drain your meat and add the noddles along with some half and half, shredded mozerella cheese and raw spinach. stir and and s&p to taste, along with any seasonings you enjoy, i like cayanne :] oh and top with parmisan.
makes a lot of food, so you can save the rest and it heats up great the next day!
another good one is just as simple. you can substitute the shrimp with chicken though as I know sometimes if you don't buy shrimp on sale, its pretty pricy.
but in a large pot cook shrimp, and then in the same water, cook your pasta, drain and set aside. (of course if you use chicken you'd want to cook your pasta first, drain the pasta and then cook the chicken with the veggies in the pot)
then cook some chopped bell peppers and onions in the pot add your meat and pasta along with a little packet of 4 cheese sauce (this involves adding milk but the packet itself is only like $2), or something comprable ie ragu alfredo sauce from a jar, ect. stir until your sauce is warm.
again, makes alot and reheats great!
i noticed that grilled cheese was only mentioned once!
get creative with it :] i like wheat bread and swiss cheese with spinach. YUM. and its always good with a bowl of soup
Cheap Meals!
i cook for a family of 5 and like alot of people right now we are on a restricted budget. Here is a little tip that may help. look for fresh chicken breast on sale. when you get them home put them in the freezer for about a 1/2 hr if not already partally frozen.(its easier to work with when partally frozen). what you want to do is fillet your chicken breasts. when you are done with that take a large ziploc bag and put one of your fillets in and pound it flat (you could use a mallot or a heavy skillet. i like using the skillet.) there are so many things you can do with it from there!...like cut the fillets into strips and toss it in stir fry...or if you want to impress your friends...just dip the fillet in egg and bread it with a mixture of italian bread crumbs and grated parmesan cheese. put it ontop of a plate of spegetti with a little mozzarella cheese. everyone will love it and its cheap with plenty of leftovers!... hope this helps

Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
I am going to bookmark this page. I have oral surgery coming right after i have this baby (June) and have enough milk pumped to feed while I am on those splendid pills. :) I was recently wondering about food options to help keep my milk up... Thanks for the wonderful mix of ideas from all of you!!
Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
Make some mac and cheese. Boil the macaroni down till its super soft - no al dente for you! Hope you feel better soon. :)
Also, I'm sure the doc told you, but avoid drinking through a straw for a while. The suction can loosen your stitches (if you have them) or pull off any scabs that are helping your mouth to heal.
Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
when I had all four impacted wisdom teeth out, I had a lot of Bolthouse Farms protein drinks (the white one is really good - I think it's chai flavored) - they have something like 40 grams of protein, and subsequently made me feel full.
I had a ton of milkshakes/smoothies that week, applesauce, etc.
my first "real" meal was spaghetti
Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
I'm sure the doc told you this, but do NOT use a straw, at least for the first few days. It could open up sutures or the wound. Avoid anything too hot. I agree with someone else's suggestion of yogurt. Not sure about spagetti-os though.. you have to chew even those. Follow the after care directions the doctor provided you with, which most likely suggested you use salt water or a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water. Do not use a mouthwash as the alcohol can cause big problems.
I remember when I had my wisdom teeth removed, all I could manage was yogurt, pudding, broth, then gradually moved on to cream of wheat, mashed potatoes the following week. I was 19 and it was the week before Thanksgiving.
Oral Surgery - What the heck do I eat?
I had all 4 Wisdom Teeth out at once @ 32 - ended up with 2 Dry Sockets.
Do NOT eat Grits. They are soft, but those little grits end up everywhere.

About floridagirl
Location: North Central Florida
About: Married with 3 children, one in college. I love to travel, try new restaurants, and spend time with my family. I'm a sap for the homeless, old folks, animals, and kids. I enjoy cooking for a crowd more than I enjoy cooking for just a few.
Favorite foods: I'm trying to eat healthier in 2009, so I have really come to enjoy many different salads. I also like shrimp, oysters (on the half), grilled chicken, and asparagus. Chocolate and pasta are my downfall...
Last bite on earth: Filet with lump crab and a truffle sauce, asparagus, caesar salad, sauteed mushrooms, and a big fat chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Nothing fancy to drink... a good sweet red wine, or sweet tea. I am from the south ya know!
