Father & Son Chili Dogs and Burgers: An Undiscovered Gem in New Jersey?
There's nothing like getting 5 lbs of dogs and a quart of chili at Father & Sons for a nice grilling session! The family is very nice too.

A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
it's supposedly called white rose "system" because they employ only ex-cons in an effort to help them get back on their feet
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
Throw in some pork ribs or pork belly and it's even more fantastic!
Father & Son Chili Dogs and Burgers: An Undiscovered Gem in New Jersey?
This is bad. This is very bad. Linden is minutes from my work, and I'm suddenly craving a chili dog.
Thanks for sharing the review!!
Father & Son Chili Dogs and Burgers: An Undiscovered Gem in New Jersey?
If it had two slices of overlapping cheese, was melted 15 seconds more, and was cooked just a little less -- well, that would be near-perfect in my book.
Father & Son Chili Dogs and Burgers: An Undiscovered Gem in New Jersey?
I wouldn't really consider what is served at Father & Son a Texas Weiner. More like a chili dog. A Texas Weiner is a beef/pork dog, not an all beef one. At Father & Son the dog is definitely not bland. Though made in Connecticut, it is a typical eastern New York/New Jersey style spicy beef dog. Not the milder Thumann's for deep frying used at the majority of the Passaic area Texas Weiner joints or the Grote & Weigle griddle frank (beef & pork) served at the Plainfield area establishments that grill rather than deep fry their dogs.
Father & Son Chili Dogs and Burgers: An Undiscovered Gem in New Jersey?
This looks like a place I need to visit. I miss the char-broiler burger joints of North Jersey, like the Anthony Wayne and the Red Chimney along Route 3 and 46.
The burger here hearkens back to those, if much larger!
Plus I never say no to a chili dog, and typical Texas Weiners in NJ are bland to me.
Thanks for sharing!
Father & Son Chili Dogs and Burgers: An Undiscovered Gem in New Jersey?
Father & Son has been a Linden landmark since 1941. As you mentioned, they were at another location until a few years ago. The old location had a great atmosphere. It was the quintessential old time luncheonette. A U shaped counter with tables inside of the U.
Glad you had a hot dog here. I like the spicy chili, but have to be in the mood for it. And when I am I can only have one dog with it; the others have to be mustard only because of the spicyness. Never had a burger, but will next time after seeing the pictures. The dog is an 8 to a lb natural casing Grote & Weigel (Connecticut) all beef dog. Very good quality, and it is prepared on a griddle. I included Father & Son on the New Jersey Hot Dog Tour in 07. It proved to be very popular with most of the attendees buying a pint or quart of the chili to bring home after having it on their dogs.
Next time you are in that area, let me suggest that you check out the Rahway Grill on Cherry Street in Rahway. This is another example of an old time luncheonette that is even older than Father & Son. It dates back to the 1920's. The chili is one of the best I ever had. Not spicy like Father & Son. More like a North Jersey Texas Weiner chili, but a little thicker. The dog used is made by Hatfield, but much better than Hatfield's other dogs, which I do not like. This one is called their New York style and it is only available in the New York/New Jersey area. Made to compete with Best and Sabrett, this dog has a great smokey, beefy taste.
I included the Rahway Grill as a stop on the last New Jersey Hot Dog Tour (09), and it was the most popular stop in the 6 years that I have been running the Tour. Which is quite impressive since the place is not primarily a hot dog joint. I know that you review hamburgers. I haven't had one, but heard that they are good. Definitely worth a stop. Less than 5 minutes away from the Rahway White Diamond.

oh the memories! i grew up in linden and when i was a pre-teen used to pass the old father & son's on my way home from school and find all the change in my backpack to get some fries.
Pork Roll/Taylor Ham
Just think how hard it is to get Taylor's in GA when it is made in NJ. I have found it at a Publix in North Georgia...Next search try to find Scrapple in the South???
Pork Roll/Taylor Ham
I just did a story on this on my breakfast blog back in August. You can find taylor ham in Midtown at Starlite Deli on West 44th Street (btw. Broadway & 8th Ave) a few doors down from Carmine's. The guys behind the counter take the full pork roll/taylor ham out and will deli slice it for you on the spot.

I hope they still have it. I've just moved to Georgia and I'm already in withdrawal!!
Pork Roll/Taylor Ham
I haven't been there since last year, but D&S Market on 56th between 5th and 6th used to have taylor ham in the mornings. They don't list it on their menu but one day I was standing next to a man who ordered it (obviously he was in the know) and I immediately regretted my bacon choice on my breakfast sandwich. Good luck!
Pork Roll/Taylor Ham
Some supermarkets in Florida carry it because of the heavy northeast population - but funny enough, I can't remember a single place in NYC that might have it. Get on your walking shoes...

Pork Roll/Taylor Ham
There are standing requests to smuggle Trenton Taylor Ham up to CT for my Sis. Nothing else like it. I prefer thinly sliced and crispy pan fried. Don't forget to slit the edges so it fries flat. A bit of cheese, poached eggs & bread optional.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
Yesterday I went to White Rose in Roselle for a double cheesburger. I don't know if it's because of the change in owners or if they just had a bad night, but my burger wasn't good at all. Dried out and lacking it's usual great flavor. If I went for the first time I would be greatly disapointed and wonder what the fuss was about.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
It's called "system" as an allusion to the White Castle System, which all these places were ripoffs of. White Castle was the first chain restaurant, and the idea of a "system" was so novel that they (and their imitators) boasted about it.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
I grew up in nearby East Brunswick and ate here in high school (usually late night). The first time I went I asked for my burger without onions and the guy at the register called it back "one sissy burger!" Still remember that over 15 years later. Pretty funny and embarrassing.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
I haven't been to the Highland Park White Rose. I go to the Roselle location. I think it's my favorite burger. I don't like onions, so I get mine without. Here, at least, they don't taste of onions if you don't order them. I like the large bacon cheeseburger (on a kaiser bun) and fries. Much more food and meatier burgers than White Diamond.

Not that impressed with the burgers here. Much prefer White Diamond.
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
@simplysw1130 It depends on the size of the pot, I think. It shouldn't be necessary with a snug pot, but it won't hurt to add water, since you can always cook it off later when you reduce the sauce.
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
are balsamic vinegar and soy sauce the only liquid ingredients to add to the pot w/ the chicken and garlic? do you need to add a little water to make sure there's enough liquid to 1/2 way cover the chicken?
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
I made this tonight and it was delicious. I used white balsamic, and finished it off on the grill, though the skin was plenty crispy without the grill time. This recipe will be a keeper!
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
Just finished eating this dish. It was absolutely delicious, thank you!
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
I adore adobo and eat it at least every couple of weeks. I follow roughly the same recipe formula as most, and definitely third/fourth? the pork lovers. A friend told me the secret to adobo is not to stir the stew for about 15 min after adding the vinegar. Not sure if there's any basis to that, as I've never been brave enough to find out :)
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo
@geenersaurus: I'll join the discussion on achiote/turmeric/cumin. It's almost certainly achiote/annato, as that's part of the Goya Adobo spice blend. (Plus it does have a mild flavor, particularly compared to cumin)
