Cook the Book: 'Japanese Hot Pots'

After a cold day at the Oregon Coast I love sitting down to a Combo Pan Roast (half & half-based seafood stew cooked with butter, white wine, cocktail sauce and broth) at Shark's in Newport. Yummmm... delish!!

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

I think someone gave me the Holly Hobbie cookbook and that was the beginning of the end. I also had "The Everything Book" which had some recipes in it... but wasn't a cookbook by definition.

Oregon strawberries! And cheese (from Tillamook, Bandon, Tumalo Farms, or Rogue Creamery... just to name a few)!

Favorite Camping Food / Recipes ?

We usually roast our bananas with brown sugar and honey... also with chocolate chips. :-)

For car camping I par-boil some ribs and keep them in the cooler. Then all you have to do is throw them down on an oiled grill to finish them off! They go great with potatoes and other vegies!

And I must confess that I am a fan of the Batter Blaster pancakes when camping. Sooo much easier and less mess than mixing, but a little on the spendy side.

McCafe: McDonald's New Fancier, Pricier Coffee

Note the liquid levels well below the rim of the cup. Just because the "medium" coffee comes in a 16oz cup does NOT mean you get 16oz of coffee. At least at Starbucks, Dunkin, etc they endeavor to fill your cup unless you ask them to "leave room"...

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

I don't think they have slices, but for a whole pie (and the experience) go to Apizza Scholls in Hawthorne.

Further down the valley... "Apizza" in Stayton is getting some buzz. Lefty's in Salem is a good bet.

Heading East? Pizza Mondo in Bend is my favorite.

And for an extended road trip head out to Baker City and try the slice of the day at Paizano's. OM NOM NOM! They are making some outstanding pizza way out there in Eastern Oregon...

What to dip my french fries in...

Smother them with pulled pork, bbq sauce, and shredded cheese. Yummm...

What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?

I've tried Mexican food in many cities, including almost every one listed in the poll. Pepe's in Central Oregon (Bend and Madras) is very authentic and delicious. If there had been a few things different, I would have thought that we were sitting in a little beachside family restaurant in Mexico. In case you were wondering... yes! I have actually been to little beachside family restaurants in Mexico. They are fantastic. They are friendly. And the food ROCKS. The food, drinks and atmosphere at Pepe's is as close as anyone has come in the US.

What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?

This one is an absolute no brainer. I am a software programmer and fortunate enough to work for a company that allows me to work from home, I try my best to make a point of living in a different city every year, I pack light and go. I've gone from southern cali, mid-west to the east coast and NOTHING compares to the mexican food in San Diego! Travel just 60 miles up the coast to Los Angeles and the difference is night and day, doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same category. San Diego is on the border of Mexico, and the mexican food gets exponentially worse the farther you get from it. Ask anyone who has actually tried mexican food in mulitple cities, I will guarantee the same response, San Diego hands down. Anyone who calls them nachos instead of carne asada chips, or taquitos instead of rolled tacos can automatically be discredited in this discussion. Those of you who have lived in San Diego will know what I mean.

homemade soups, starting with meat bones and ending with seasonal vegetables....the best! takes hours to simmer on the stove...but the end results are used in so many meals...the simplest being laddled into a big bowl and with a crusty bread on the side.

My favorite meal worthy soup would be homemade bean soup with ham and bacon in it. I make it with a ham bone and let it simmer for about 3 hours. Very tasty and filling. I also like my mom's homemade vegetable soup with fresh veggies from the garden! Mmm good!

My Momma liked to make big ol pots of soups and stews. All us kids and our kids would come over and eat. Sometimes she'd be creative and add different things. My Daddy would smell it and come in and ask what she was cooking. She would tell him she was making "stuff". It was funny. She was a great cook.

I love to make a Korean soup made with fresh chicken cooked in water and spiced with plenty of grated fresh ginger. The chicken is shredded, and a cup or two of cooked rice is added to the broth and cooked until the soup has the consistency of "chowder." Serve in Oriental bowls and garnished with sliced green onions and Korean sesame salt. Delish, and very healing if you are suffering from respiratory "flu."

Cook the Book: 'Japanese Hot Pots'

A nice, warm bowl of beef or chicken curry (Japanese-style) cooked with just the right amount of veggies. It's not quite soup but I purposely thin it out so that it has that soupy feel to it. Warms you up and sticks with you all day plus leaves your house smelling wonderful for days. :)
