Fresh fish.. I've been in the habit of eating fruits and vegetables according to season, but never thought about it at the fish counter.. after reading Bitty's column (thanks to Mario, Gwyneth, and Claudia he is no longer known by any other name in my house) and his books, I make sure to buy fresh, wild fish.. stay away from the frozen farm-raised stuff, if possible.. as hard as it is, i go to the fish monger without a set recipe now, and see what looks good. i'm such a planner, it's a huge step!

Cook the Book: 'Baking Unplugged'

one afternoon, my friend and i couldn't decide which cake to make, so we attempted to make both the pine nut and pistachio loaf cakes in the Italian (two?) Easy book.. We were also cooking dinner, and somehow.. between three dishes in progress and several French 75s, I caught an oven mitt on fire. Threw it in the sink. My husband threw it outside...neither of us doused it in water. That evening, the boys were cleaning up the kitchen before bed, and smelled smoke. opened the door to the deck and found an oven mitt-shaped hole. The mitt burned a perfect hole through the deck and smoldered itself into oblivion. just soom soot on the ground beneath. We were celebrating our new house. We had been there maybe a month, and almost burned the place down.

Serious Cheese: What Happens When a Curd Nerd Becomes Lactose Intolerant?

Thought for years I was lactose intolerant. Then was prescribed a Z-pack antibiotic, now i can digest dairy!!!!!! Apparently something was blocking the enzyme needed to digest dairy & the antibiotic killed it. But just recently had the stomach flu, was still sick after 2 weeks. Doc said the dairy products were FEEDING the BAD BACTERIA. Said no dairy for 2 weeks, then start adding back in PROBIOTICS (Activia, ect....) for 2 weeks then add regular dairy back in. Still in the no dairy stage, will let you know if it works. Cross your fingers!!!! lol Found this site looking for cheese low in lactose, Thank you so much for a wealth of info everyone!!!!

14 Granola Brands Taste-Tested Head-to-Head

I've had Bear Naked, Galaxy, and Artisanal granolas. Bear Naked is my chief brand, can't help it, the stuff's GOOD lol! But, I'm also atrracted to the Galaxy brand because I love it calorie and fat content, are great. Artisanal is good too and has alittle more nutrients&minerals in it than the other 2, yet all 3 are very healthy. Though BN is my main brand, I occassionaly switch between these 3 brands, due to their fat, calorie, carb and sugar contents are in the range that I like, unlike some other brands which are, let's say, a wee bit too much in those areas. :-)

14 Granola Brands Taste-Tested Head-to-Head

I've had Artisanal, Bear Naked and Galaxy. I frequent Bear Naked the most, hey, the stuff's GOOD! But, I also have had Galaxy, which is yummy too! Also, I love the calorie and fat content of Galaxy aswell, that's what atrracts me to that brand, but I'm still faithful to Bear Naked too! Artisanal is really good too, and loaded with more nutrients than the other brands I've noticed. # basically great brands with a fat, calorie, carb range I like.

Potbelly Sandwich Works: Big Sandwiches for a Small Price

I love this place and so sad that there are none in North Jersey where I have moved.....was in Philly the other day and planned a stop on the way home....got the tuna, no cheese, pickles - L&T and HOT PEPPERS.....also bought 2 jars of the peppers to bring home. A few weeks ago I had to eat with a co-worker at a Quizno's and made them toast the tuna with no cheese and they asked 3 times and even had the manager come to verify what I had requested. Sadly that wasn't even close to having a Potbelly sandwich. After I ate the other day, I regretted not getting the large - I contemplated ordering a 2nd regular but thought the staff might think I have an eating disorder - the only disorder is that I don't have a Potbelly near me!

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Salmon Burgers

I'd never bought canned salmon before until this week for this recipe, does it always come with skin and bones?? I thought it would be like tuna. Trying to extricate all the tiny bones was really frustrating and the burgers turned out incredibly dry and bland. Wish I'd used fresh!

Potbelly Sandwich Works: Big Sandwiches for a Small Price

By far, the best Potbelly sandwich is a meatball with hot peppers, mushrooms, lettuce and tomato. I've tried everything on and off their menu (ask about the secret sandwiches) and it's the one I always come back to. I'm mildly concerned about moving away, because what will I eat when I need a hot sandwich fix?

THANK YOU! I had been avoiding Potbelly for years - thinking it would be too heavy/bready. After reading the article and comments, headed immediately to the nearest Potbelly and had the Italian (no lettuce ... warm lettuce gives me the heebies) and adored the hot peppers and chocolate malt. Going back tomorrow for a salad.

Potbelly Sandwich Works: Big Sandwiches for a Small Price

So funny to see this in my email. I was JUST (i.e., two minutes ago) fantasizing about quitting my job and opening a Potbelly near my Wall St. office. (Seriously, lunch options suck around here, I'm jealous of everyone who works in midtown.)

I, too, am a DC transplant and miss my vegetarian yum sandwiches. And the cookie on the (strawberry) milkshake straw - loved it!

Dinner Tonight: Salmon Burgers

I just got back from fishing in Alaska with about 100lbs of king salmon filets, just not ready to chop it up and and disguise the salmon I'll be doing that after a couple months in the freezer and the freshness fades. For now it's a filet of salmon on sourdough bread a smear of homemade dill aioli and some crisp lettuce nothing more.
On a side note got a 56lb king salmon with white meat it's a bit milder kinda between salmon and halibut in flavor but still loaded with omega-3's and other essential fats and oils, some claim it has more fats and oils but I'll leave that to some anal retentive nutrishionist, to me it tastes good.

Love these--my mom used to call them "salmon patties" and we ate them without the bun. Lately, I make them for buns. She used the same basic recipie, but always added finely chopped celery and onion to the canned salmon. An egg, some breadcrumbs (I use panko now that they are readily available), and a little mayo to hold them all together. Without the bun, we didn't care if they fell apart, but with all that they hold together pretty well now. We always cook them in butter--not real good for you but it gives the salmon an even richer flavor. Crisp on the outside, flaky on the inside. Sounds like dinner tonight!

If there's no lettuce and tomato, what makes it a sub? Without L&T, it's just a meatball sandwich.

Oh, heavens, I LOVE Potbelly! Bite your tongue for insulting my beloved Wreck Sammich. Love that thing, and love the masochistic burn of those hot peppers.

History of my Potbelly experiences:

Day 1 - Go to the Potbelly across the street from my apartment for the first time. Order a Wreck with everything except pickles and tomatoes. Nearly die from overwhelming tastiness.

Days 2-153 (or thereabout) Do the same thing at least three times a week. Renew lease at apartment because of proximity to said Potbelly. During this time realize that their vegetable soup cures hangovers miraculously.

Day 154 - Discover the Italian with everything except pickles and tomatoes. Nearly die again from recurring overwhelming tastiness.

Days 125-750 - Have seen the price go up from $3.59 to $4.50 a sandwich, the introduction of salads and the skinny and big, and witnessed the change to Zapp's chips. Also tried the Cholula hot sauce (it's fine). If Potbelly were a woman, I'd ask for her hand in marriage.

The Joys of Unnaturally Flavored Sodas

I am not really big on soda anymore BUT last summer I was in Nags Head, NC and found the famous Cheerwine, a NC thing. It is fizzy cherry-flavored soda, not cherry cola, just cherry soda. It is out of this world delicious.

Last week when we were close to the border of NC and leaving for WV, I hit a supermarket and bought myself a 12 pack to take home to NJ. We can't get it here. It is my favorite soda in a really long time.

Otherwise I really like Cherry 7Up but they don't sell it in cans around here, just 2 liter bottles, which I have no room for in the refrigerator. I also love Crystal Light Wild Strawberry (comes in a powder that you mix with water) and their Citrus stuff too. Excellent mixed with some green tea! I make fusions of all kinds of things.

I have never liked Fresca. When I was a child, all the skinny cool girls drank the Diet Fresca and that was all they drank (that and lots of folks drank Tab) - neither of which I could get a tasting for. My favorite soda at the time was Pepsi - just plain Pepsi. To this day, I prefer plain Pepsi over anything Coke, don't know why. BUT I prefer Diet Coke to Diet Pepsi.
