Drinking the Bottom Shelf: 40s of Malt Liquor

Hot Butter'd Rum

I mix a pint of good vanilla ice cream (softened), a stick of butter (softened), a cup of brown sugar, and a cup of powdered sugar. Add a pinch of cinnamon and a teaspoon of vanilla. Freeze.
Add 2 tablespoons of the mix to a cup with rum and hot water.
You could give this as a gift but it needs to be kept in the freezer.
I use cheap rum, but this is the only thing I use rum with. It is also good with bourbon.

Poll: Do You Care About Cupcakes?

I am not a fan of the cupcake, but my kids love them so I get roped into making them occasionally. We enjoy making them look ridiculous (my SIL gave me a book on decorating cupcakes). However, I have bought a cupcake exactly once. Why buy when you can bake?

Serious Salad: Thanksgiving in July

We always have several vegetarian dishes at Thanksgiving, including vegan mashed potatoes alongside the ones made with cream and butter. We don't even have any vegans in the family anymore, but they satisfy those of us who wish to stay awake for pie.
BTW, I actually have my Thanksgiving in July turkey defrosting in the fridge right now!

Serious Beer: 9 IPAs from Washington State

Mmm... now I want dinner at Boundary Bay. I'm not a fan of IPA though. I'd rather go with the Dunkels Bock while its available.

the best place to let kneaded bread rise?

I put mine on top of the refrigerator. Its in a corner, so away from drafts, and the energy from the fridge's motor keeps it fairly warm.

Alice Waters = Totally Out of Touch

I have a limited income, plus kids to feed. I grow much of my own produce. We live very tastily. However, I hate being told its better to eat from a street vendor in Sicily than to get a fast food burger. I just don't have that option. And my kids really like an occasional treat- not McDonalds, but my local burger joint doesn't have grass fed beef either.

Help with hot cross buns!

My great aunt and uncle always had a party after Good Friday services and would bake hundreds of hot cross buns. Most were made with raisins or currants but there would always be several dozen without any fruit at all for us kids who blanched at the thought of "spider bodies" in our bread. There were also some with icing and some without, but as kids we always went for the icing!

What's the stupidest thing you ever ordered at a restaurant?

Seafood enchiladas at a terrible Mexican place. Never order the only seafood item on the menu!

Do you know what's under your kitchen sink?

Cleaning supplies, plus my giant box full of little boxes of Ziploc bags. From Costco. I keep the big box under the sink, and one little box in my drawer with the plastic wrap, foil, parchment, etc.

Your Starbucks/Cafe order

When I get coffee out: Latte with honey or cinnamon dolce latte. Always hot. I love Starbucks, but I live north of Seattle and there are a million coffee places, including two within two miles. (I live out in the country.) Tea at home though.

The Different Types of Peanut Butter Eaters

I always have two jars of peanut butter in the house. A jar of natural peanut butter (usually Adam's) for making sandwiches and a jar of creamy Jiff for cooking. I truly believe there is nothing more heavenly than a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich, especially if its homemade jam. This is my midnight snack, my guilty pleasure. My kids love peanut butter cookies- they are preferred even over chocolate chip. And we all love Asian inspired meals with peanut buttery sauces.

Impromptu Pepsi Throwback Taste Test

I definitely preferred the throwback Mountain Dew over HFCS Mountain Dew. I'm now anxious to try the Pepsi. I hope it is as good as Mexican Coke which is my standard soda pop right now.

Eating in class?

I'm currently taking evening classes and our prof actually brings in snacks for us because the class falls during the typical dinner hour. Of course I am so uncomfortable eating in public I have a hard time with the crackers she brings because they crunch. Somehow I imagine every food noise I make will cause heads to swing around and eyes to stare. I don't mind drinking, usually coffee or water, but I can't handle soda pop. The sound of the can opening is too much!

Introduce Yourself!

I'm Athena. I'm from Bellingham, WA, also, although I was born, bred, and except for a 3 month stint in Seattle have always lived here. I'm 31. I love food, cooking, and baking. I could easily spend my one day off producing a dozen loaves of bread. And then consuming them.

Ginger Syrup on Pancakes

I love ginger syrup on gingerbread pancakes! I also love making my own ginger ale with ginger syrup and club soda. Ooo, and drizzled over sliced apples. Okay, maybe I just love ginger. A lot. I may have a problem.

New Year's Champagne Cocktail: The Shirley Temple, All Grown Up

I got very excited about this especially because I'd planned on giving the kids Shirley Temples for New Year's Eve. I made a classic Shirley Temple, just swapping sparkling wine for the soda. It was okay, but I preferred plain champagne with a maraschino cherry for garnish. It was garish and fun without being too sweet. Perfect for New Year's!
