Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

these stories are amazing! i'm lucky in that my mother is a great cook and she made us wonderful sandwiches - not for long as she was a single parent and we quickly had to learn to make our own.

never tried miracle whip though so now i'm totally mistified - how bad can it be?

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

LOVE her, growls and all. she makes food i want to eat and makes it look easy - and, i find, it actually IS easy. she got me to cook things i never thought i would. she's fun and i learn new stuff all the time. i'm surprised that people react so strongly to her style, then again, Ina Garten puts me to sleep...

Ko Vs. Ssam Bar

Ko is definitely an experience and delicious but the menu does not change that much. lunch at Ko is even more elaborate than dinner (and more expensive but possibly easier to snag a reservation), if you want to make it truly over the top.

Ssam's menu changes a lot and it's the kind of place you can go any time. the food is good but not as intricate as Ko. Plus you only get the shaved foie at Ko :-)

if you have the reservation already, go to Ko; if you don't, try to get it. If you fail, you can always go to Ssam.

no dress code, it's all very casual and don;t expect plush anything at Ko - you'll be sitting on stools around a counter. but the food will be sublime.

Centro Vinoteca - worth it?

i've had the steak and it's fantastic. it's also huge so depending on your appetite, you may want to share it.

i'm sure they still have it. i don't think they would take something so good off the menu.

The Cooking Loft.....what did you think?

i just caught one show, found the student concept contrived, everything was very scripted and the slow speech pattern made it even more so - i bet Alex Guarnaschelli has a lot more personality than she's shown in that tomato episode. maybe she can relax into it over time and feel more comfortable, be more natural. the tempo is a little slow for me - sorry but Ina puts me to sleep - i like more energy.

my least favorite part was how she was shot - the camera is too close and she looked a little scary - the eyes & eyebrows movements made her look a little strange and the chest was distracting. too close for me, and it took away from the cooking part.

From Talk

The Cooking Loft? Anne Burrell?

i wish they had posted something on the show's page on the website. Like more shows to come this fall or something.

More FN disasters coming soon

i was very disappointed with the Ted Allen show. fluff is correct. too bad

From Talk

Anyone else peek at the spoilers for TNFNS?

it was pretty obvious they wanted Aaron - look at all the new programing, they are going after a new market with the Neelys, Sunny Anderson, Aaron. they really wanted to keep Neepa (sp?) around, too even though she was horrible - done right, it could be a really good show. they should look for a chef though, not a wanna be tv star for that kind of cooking.

Adam was fun but his food chops were not strong enough. and Lisa got to the final 3 based on her cooking but she's too nervous on camera and (sorry Lisa), just too weirdly orange. he was the obvious choice half-way through.

i should start putting $$ on this shit

Anne Burrell's show: I hate to bring this up again but...

grizz - maybe it's naive of me but when she said beets were her favorite i didn't take it as filler - it sounded to me like she really likes beets (maybe because so do i), she was very enthusiastic about them. or perhaps i don't watch FN enough, lol

the pork chop episode today was fantastic, i thought. Anne seemed very comfortable and relaxed and the dish was terrific. i could eat that right now!

From Talk

Anne Burrell's show: I hate to bring this up again but...

grizz - what's wrong with liking beets? i happen to like beets a lot and cook them at least once a week. disagree with putting citrus on it though, everybody else does it, kinda old hat... the pistacchio pecorino combo is a fresher idea, i think. she didn't use much salt in the salad at all

From Talk

Anne Burrell's show: I hate to bring this up again but...

the salt thing - i think she's just saying not to be afraid of it and that it probably takes more than you think to get the taste right and that restaurants use more salt. ultimately, it's all about tasting the food and your personal taste. if you look at the recipes, she never imposes any particular amounts for salt - it just says "kosher salt" under ingredients. seasoning is a personal thing, she's just drawing attention to it, imo

From Talk

The verdict! Anne Burrell's new show - Did you watch?

it WAS a bit over the top but very enjoyable, i think. (i'm sorry but Ina Garten almost put me to sleep - totally different pace, didn't hold my attention.)

i assume the next few shows are already taped but i hope she gets to do more and they take all these comments into consideration... balance it more on the learning side and it can be truly fab. there is a lot of potential there, imo

From Talk

The verdict! Anne Burrell's new show - Did you watch?

thanks for the encouragement :-) i will. but prob. not in 80+ degree weather

i agree, there must be million recipes for bolognese, it's one of those dishes that everyone tweaks their way. a simple version sounds like a good start for me.

From Talk

The verdict! Anne Burrell's new show - Did you watch?

chiff - heehee, you have no idea - i never cook meat anything!! that bolognese though - that looked like something i COULD make. and feed a bunch of friends. just looked fun and super-easy.

From Talk

chiffonade - the next one is daunting - at least to me - leg of lamb! you can see the episodes here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_lr

From Talk

The verdict! Anne Burrell's new show - Did you watch?

@boscompb - your comment "I'm sorry, but either she is extremely bipolar and off her medication, or NEEDS it badly." - you call this "simply telling it like it is"?? no, it's offensive and unnecessary.

you know, some people thought Julia Child came across as drunk on her show when she first started because of her voice an uncoordinated movements.

From Talk

Anne Burrell's show: I hate to bring this up again but...

boy, I loved the premise. the 'okaaay...so' ...has already made me nuts. I keep expecting them to beat this out of her before I see another episode. recipes are great. I would love for her to make it but I wish she would just stop trying to be so cool and just teach us!

From Talk

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

I've loved Anne since day one...but where are the NEW shows? Lately they've just been re-runs.

From Talk

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

I find her to be utterly grating. I change the channel when I see her, even if it's just a commercial.

From Talk

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

I really love her. I am nervous for her...yes she should take it down a notch with her grunts and all....but I really love to watch her. She is refreshing and makes simple food.....

From Talk

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

I think she's great - and I have made many of her recipes - the food is terrific.

From Talk

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

I love Anne Burrell! She definitely knows what she's doing and I find her energy exciting! Everything she makes inspires me! When I first saw her on tv, I said to myself, "Who is this character?" I thought she was a bit too demonstrative and loud. But after watching her, I realized that it is her passion and know-how that makes her fun to watch and learn from! Keep on cookin' Anne!

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

I dont understand what's so wrong with white bread and mayo?? No one likes a turkey or ham sandwhich with lettuce, cheese, mayo, mustard and tomatoe?? Weird. I guess I'm the odd man out. I also really like Tuna sandwiches on white bread-maybe because my dad never let us eat white bread growing up...
Anyways my worst sandwich ever growing up was a PB&J with butter on the jelly side!!! I gaged everytime I took a bite to find a layer of butter in there as well UGH! And I'd have to agree with the bologna on white w/mayo-NASTY!! What is bologna anyways?? Like animal parts all ground into one little round circle lol?

From Talk

The verdict! Anne Burrell's new show - Did you watch?

I like Anne Burrell. I like her show. The only complaint I have is that the show is entirely too short. A note to Food Network; most formal classes last forty-five minutes to an hour. Why? Because it is hard for anyone to absorb a useful amount of information in a shorter period of time. It is VERY hard for a teacher to deliver a useful amount of information to students in a shorter period of time.

Those complaining about Ms. Burrell's style should go out and find out what it is like to actually live a real life. Most of what I have read has been limp-wristed twaddle.

From Talk

Who loves Anne Burrell?!

When I first viewed Anne Burrell's show, "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef", I thought it was a rather interesting concept. Admittedly, she was a bit "out there", but i tried to get past some of the quirks. To be honest, she's not more annoying than the EVOO diva, or the Pepsodent pin-up, to name a couple. One of my biggest pet peeves with her, is her habit of double-dipping with the same spoon when she tastes the food (maybe it's just me).

Although I think that there's way too much emphasis on physical appearance, I would just like to add that maybe she'd do well not to wear some of those figure-hugging tops. Our girl looks like she can chow down, so having said that, those tops are not the most flattering.

I must say that I always learn a lot from her show and I respect her as a real, working chef. The FoodNetwork is much richer for having chefs of her knowledge and caliber.

From Talk

The verdict! Anne Burrell's new show - Did you watch?

watched this show for the first time today. it was the episode with grilled salmon and lentils. i was horrified. twice she dipped her spoon in the lentil pot, tasted, and then returned the drippings in the spoon to the pot. then she tasted a last time and returned the entire spoon to the pot. i will never eat anywhere she cooks. i do not understand how the producers would let that air. disgusting...

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

My sandwich was one I paid for at a sandwich shop. The idea sounds good but the exicution was all wrong.
Turkey (like left over thanksgiving turkey) with cornbread stuffing and carnberry mayo. Maybe it tasted so bad because it wasn't my thanksgiving left overs it was some want to be thanksgiving dinner that never made it to the table.

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

i recall some incident with trying to make a sandwich with processed american cheese slices, mustard and i think... potato\ chips or something? i made this on one of the rare occasions i was babysat claiming "my mom lets me make this all the time" i know i ate too many cheese slices that night and then threw them up.
i kinda still make the same kind of food mistakes.

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

when i was young i remember eating butter and mayo sandwiches on white bread with my cousin. he was about 5 at the time (and vegetarian, by his parents choice) so that was basically all he would eat for lunch. sometimes there was some cucumber (for all the added flavor, ya know?). ha. it was freaking gross and i don't know why my parents made me eat it. luckily he lived far away and didn't come over for lunch often.

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

Bologna on white bread with ketchup. The ketchup made everything so soggy. When I was little, I loved eating it since it kind of tasted like a hot dog. Now the thought of it makes me ill...

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

This has always been pretty obvious to me, but my parents made the best sandwiches for me. We always had whole grain bread, none of that gross white bread, deli mustards (even though I didn't like mustard as a kid), fresh deli meat (or leftover turkey, ham, steak, etc.), fresh veggies. Mmmm, makes me want a sandwich right now!

I think my parents spoiled me, food-wise, from a pretty early age.

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

YES I am totally with the Miracle Whip Haters. I think I hate it because it has that slightly sweet flavor. If I wanted sweet, I'd have PB&J. I guess I always associate mayo with more savory flavors and the sweetness of Miracle Whip makes my taste buds confused and upset.

Nothing is worse than an egg salad sandwich...

...that includes egg shells....*blech!*

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

The worst ever? White bread, glops of mayo, raw white onion, parsley. Someone made this for my husband and me right after we got married. She wouldn't tell me what was in it, just that it was a surprise and I would love it. I'm amazed that I was able to get it back out of my mouth without incident, and by incident I mean the almost instantaneous upchucking that usually occurs when I accidentally bite into raw onion. It was HIDEOUS! But at least she used Hellman's ;)

@twoojoe ha, no, all legal items in that garden! i remember it being inside on this giant 45 degree slope, all water trickle'n down all the time... hmm.

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

Most of mine deal with tuna. I think the official worst sandwich I ever had was a tuna salad hoagie from Wawa. I have no idea how people eat their tuna, but it is SO heavily mayonnaised it just oozes out of the sandwich. Blech. I can feel my arteries clogging just thinking about that day.
I also made the mistake once of packing a tuna salad sandwich (made at home with a normal tuna:mayo ratio) to eat several hours later at lunch. I don't think it would've been hazardous to my health to eat the sandwich, but it definitely felt like the salad had taken a turn for the worse over the course of that time. Apparently it wasn't kept cold enough.
One last one...my family had a constant war going as to how to make tuna salad. My mom and I agreed that it should be tuna, mayo, celery, and onions, my dad wanted his with relish (*shudder*). So one day at lunch, my mom offered me tuna salad, i bit in expecting my normal sandwich, and got my dad's sandwich instead. Horrible surprise.

From Talk

I once dated someone who made me a Chef Boyardee mini ravioli sandwich on buttered white bread, and then as if the "sauce" from the canned ravioli wasn't enough he added ketchup. It was so soggy he had to serve it in a bowl with a knife and fork.

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

Bologna, Kraft Singles and Miracle Whip on fat white bread. Blech!!

Also, I don't like butter on cold sandwiches, so... some kind of mystery pre-wrapped deli style meat like olive loaf with buttered bread. The horror....

Actually, most of those weird, funny smelling deli-style meats on anything are gross.

From Talk

My sister used to eat peanut butter and bologna sandwich. The smell was nauseating!

From Talk

Worst Sandwich You've Ever Had

@KarynMC - OMG, my Canadian grandparents served me those sandwiches! Some days it was white sugar, some days brown, but always butter and white bread!

My mom and aunts had a love affair with packaged, sliced ham (Danola, I think). They would serve it on Wonder Bread - double ugh - with either mayo or Squeeze Parkay Margarine.

All the ingredients would stick to one another the moment you took a bite, and then, en masse, they would stick to the roof of your mouth, your teeth, etc. It was like wallpaper glue in a lunchbox. I am gagging at the mouth feel memory of those slimy, chewy creations.
