Bad Host: Invited to dinner and asked to PAY! Would you?
I was once invited to someone's house for dinner. We get there with a nice bottle of wine in hand. They show off their new house, give us a couple hors d'oeuvres with the wine we brought, then say - where do guys want to go for dinner? I was flabbergasted. I have not accepted invites to their house since then and that was a couple years ago.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
So sorry for your loss. My late beagle Whiskey was a true serious eater, it's a beagle thing. He had a special love of sticky rice, fresh vegetables and my mom's empanadas.
This was a beautiful obituary for a special dog, thanks for posting it.

I should add that of course we were expected to split the bill on that dinner out...

Another vote for the Organic Valley lactose-free, it's the best tasting lactose-free that I've tasted.

I mention this skit all the time. I always use the phrase "girl drink drunk". A classic.
Cream of Wheat: Way or No Way?
I love cream of wheat, and I actually try to make it lumpy like my mom did. It's yummy with maple syrup and a bit of brown sugar. When my boyfriend was in the hospital recently, the cream of wheat was the only thing he would eat because it was the only thing they didn't manage to make disgusting.

Bad Host: Invited to dinner and asked to PAY! Would you?
I used to date a guy who would complain about the food so he didn't have to pay for his dinner when we went out to eat. I, of course, had to pay for mine and my son's. After awhile, I got smart and stopped dating this guy.
There are cheapskates and there are people who just love to see if they can get away with having someone else pay for them. I am the type that doesn't get burnt as much as I once did. I will pay once. After that, I doubt I will be your 'friend'.
Bad Host: Invited to dinner and asked to PAY! Would you?
It's been my experience that these kinds of people invariably are the most wealthy ones in the circle. Like when I was a waitress, the worst tippers (and most difficult customers) were often the richest clients.
Bad Host: Invited to dinner and asked to PAY! Would you?
we have "friends" that do this all the time, to the extreme! Down to figuring out what some couples should pay if their children eat...it sickens me. They are not really our friends, more like friends of friends, so its not something I feel comfortable bringing up. We try and avoid anything at their house anymore. Last New Years Eve they charged everybody $12 a head for a dinner that none of asked for or wanted! On a more recent camping trip they tried to charge all the couples for the fire wood they brought! We thought it was a joke (no way I'm paying for firewood that you cut down on your dads property!). They earn nearly double what the rest of the couples in our circle does btw...
*lord i hope they don't read this*
Video: Cracking Open a Big Egg
Imagine if you could market the egg in an egg.
For those that are cash strapped. The new egg squared. By a dozen get a dozen.
Of course it would make for an interesting hard boiled egg.
Video: Cracking Open a Big Egg
Wow. Now I was expecting an abnormal amount of yolks. Double wouldn't be unusual enough so I was thinking 3.
About 1/3 of the eggs my chickens have been laying have been double yolked but so far none have been double eggs. Now I'm sort of worrying about the freakishly big one I hard boiled last night for my batch of pickled eggs.

"The big egg is a lot bigger."
Hahaha. I agree, enblithe. The deadpan tone really makes the video.

Kind of crazy... you are right, above though... very similar to the double yolk thing.

Is there "milk" that tastes like milk for lactose intolerance?
As mentioned, all lactose free milks will be a little sweeter because of the breakdown of sugars. Might I suggest encouraging your son to try the milk with cereal or something first, where the flavor difference won't be quite as noticeable, before trying to drink it straight from the glass. I found this helped me get used to drinking soy milk when I went through a lactose-issue stint. Good luck, and as a few have mentioned, it will just take a little time and some open-minded thinking.
You may also find he prefers different milks for different things (drinking, cereal, etc). Play around with it!
Is there "milk" that tastes like milk for lactose intolerance?
Lactaid, lactaid, lactaid! I love the stuff. The skim does taste a bit sweeter, but it's pretty hard to taste the difference in 2%. You can also get store-brand lactose free milk, as others have mentioned. I also agree that any calcium-fortified lactose free milk tastes just awful. I've tried just about every non-dairy milk, and lactose-free milk is the closest you can get. I rarely drink milk by itself anymore.
I will warn you that taking pills with uncooked* milk has never worked for me, so be prepared for issues there.
*There are two ways to deal with the now un-digestable lactose in the milk. Take lactase supplements, pre-added like in lactaid, or in pill form, or boil/cook the milk at high temperature for awhile. Both of these will denature and subsequently break down the lactose protein, which is what a LI person's body can no longer do on it's own.
Anyway, good luck!
Is there "milk" that tastes like milk for lactose intolerance?
When my GI doc diagnosed me with lactose intolerance, he said that yogurt would not be a problem as well as hard cheeses, but to avoid soft cheeses. I honestly don't think I am lactose intolerant tho-.
Is there "milk" that tastes like milk for lactose intolerance?
Lactaid and other milks like it taste sweet because the lactase enzymes break up the lactose turning it into sugars. I thought it was too sweet when I first drank it as a young person as well. But, after a couple of days- especially noticing that I wasn't in pain anymore, I got used to it, and now I love it. Maybe your son just needs a bit of time.
My Secret Love for Grape Candy
Thank you for this post! It made me smile from ear to ear. I just found Batman themed Airheads at Target yesterday, which included a grape flavored bar. I was thrilled beyond belief and trying to find an excuse to go back so I can buy 10 bags of Airheads just to get the one grape!
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
Brassy was pound for pound the greatest hound dog the world has ever seen. He pursued food with ingenuity, stealth and sheer athleticism. Once Marcia and I picked up a Carnegie Deli corned beef sandwich for Vicky, who was convalescing and had expressed that somewhat out-of-character craving. Before I had two feet in the door Brass charged like a wounded tiger and leaped impossibly high, given his short legs and considerable girth. I pulled my arm up in the nick of time, saving Vicky's lunch, but Brass earned my eternal respect that day. RIP, Brassy. We'll miss you.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
Someplace in Doggy Heaven Brass is communicating with our dear departed Suzy Beagle, his soulmate. Suzy ate crayons and balloons with gusto. She got into the garbage can and devoured the skeletal remains of 6 barbecued chickens. Forget that bit about never giving chicken bones to a dog, she did fine. She did, however, become a bit bloated, after eating 5 lbs of ditalini and then taking a long drink, however the 5 pounds of blood meal fertilizer went down just fine.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
Brass's story brought bake lovely memories of our wonderful "Puppy" - a mixed breed terrier of dubious parentage and who blessed our lives for 19 years. She, too, was a serious eater, and our favorite Puppy story is the year that she was left in our van with a gift wrapped FIVE POUND box of See's Candy for approximately two minutes, while I stepped out of the van to mail some letters. In that two minutes, Puppy managed to open the box of candy and devour every single piece! Thank God she was not chocolate sensitive. We took her to the vet, who said basically to wait and see what happens. What happened was that Puppy went home and slept for about two days straight and following that short rehab period, was fine. I'd like to say she never tried to eat any more candy, but that would be a lie, since no food was safe from her skinny little terrier self. I still miss her very much twenty-five years later.
Thank you for the lovely story.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
Ed and Vicki,
What a wonderful piece abt Brassy. Another passing of an era, like college graduation.... I still remember you "just walking the dog" in the morning -- staying 2 blocks behind W when he first started going to school on his own. Time moves on but the memories continue to glow--
Best, Gael

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
@ArlynD; I'm sure he is. I hope to share some of mine with him someday. There may not be a heaven, but dogs need something better anyway. A land of endless squirrels to chase and muddy bogs to run through, and where treats are copious and delicious. And the last bite of hotdog always falls just between their hopeful paws.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
I once walked into Ed and Vicky's kitchen and caught Brass actually pushing a chair closer to a counter so that he could climb up and reach some food!
A sandwich "shared" with Brass always tasted better. I hope he's sharing one with Jasper right now.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
Thanks for sharing your memories of Brass--sounds like a wonderful dog who was just right for your home. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
My sincere condolences.
When I lost my dog, it took me ages to finish a whole sandwich by myself...he knew he would always get the last bite, and would wait patiently for it.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 80: Remembering Our Serious Eater Beagle Brass
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.
As sad as it is to lose a pet, it is wonderful to read a tribute as sweet and funny as your memories of Brass. What a great dog. As I read your post, I couldn't help but remember similar Thanksgivings and missing food mysteries of my own with my old Lab, Checkers.
In memory of Brass, I will let my dogs do the dishes tomorrow...and I will eat pie and make sure there is plenty left on the plates.
