They were similar to calzones/pierogies but the best way to describe them would be a savory fried donut filled with piping hot taco meat and cheese. Where can I find them?!!! I've never been to the south, but I've some good southern food at local restaurants (at least I think so). The most memorable are the chicken and waffles from Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland. The waffles are unbelievable.

Sugar Flour Butter in Sunnyvale, CA. Everything there is delicious. The staff is so nice. They did a wonderful job with our wedding cakes.

@Carioca - You should use regular rice flour. Glutinous rice flour lends a chewier texture. Hope this helps.
